RUB 50
The Ruhr-Universität, the oldest university of the Ruhr area, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. On
November 2nd, 1965, the first lectures took place at the new university, which back then was still a
large construction site. Today, RUB is one of the best young universities in the world, and we have
every reason to celebrate and to thank all those who made it a story of success. The summer of
2015 has a lot of extraordinary events in store:
BlauPause – Looking for international volunteers!
Where the people commute to their lectures or to their workplaces day in, day out, the traffic will
stand still on June 6, 2015: For BlauPause Universitätsstraße will be closed down along a fivekilometre stretch and turned into a party district. At 1200 tables, groups and organisations of RUB
and from Bochum will present themselves. The International Office will be there too of course – at
our tables right by the Universitätsstraße 90, international students and researchers will introduce
their home countries and present an interactive programme and thus, as one might say, invite you
and the other visitors to their home.
International Week
Go on a journey around the world with us!
The Ruhr-Universität is international: Over 5.300 students from foreign countries study together
on one campus; the RUB has a big amount of partner universities spread all over the world. There
is no question about it that our international friends also play a big role at the 50 th anniversary of
the Ruhr-Universität.
For the International Week we make a great deal of time: From June 8 to 12, representatives from
partner universities, students, researchers, members of staff and alumni come together at the
campus to celebrate the RUB anniversary. The programme is as varied as the protagonists’
countries of origin: from theatre plays, through culinary delights, workshops and lectures, all the
way to exotic music, there’s a lot to explore.
Each day is themed around a different (sub-) continent in the coffee bar of the canteen:
Monday, 8 June: Asia
Tuesday, 9 June: Eastern Europe
Wednesday, 10 June: Western/Southern Europe
Thursday, 11 June: The Americans – from North to South
Friday, 12 June: Global Day
Active participation in the festivities
Would you like to represent your country at BlauPause and/or the International Week?
Would you like to get in contact with German and international students and researchers and work
on a project together? Then take part in our information meeting on 21 April at 03:00 pm in SSC
1/263!
Everyone interested is invited to come along and can register here:
More information and the registration can be found here.

RETROSPECT
Evaluation of the semester programme
The RUBiss Team would like to thank you very much for your active participation in the semester
programme. Your presence at Ruhr-Universität is a great enrichment!
Since we plan to offer a varied programme in the next upcoming semesters too, we would like to
ask you to take a moment to fill out our evaluation form online. You would support our work in
particular and we are very interested to hear your suggestions, criticisms and ideas. Of course, the
survey is held up anonymous.
This is the link to the English survey.
Orientation Week (O-Week)
As every year RUBiss organized orientation events for new international students at the beginning
of this semester. During the orientation week from 27. March until 01. April 2015 the participants
got to know the Ruhr-Universität and the city of Bochum – e.g. via guided tours of the university
library, the botanical garden, the centre of music and arts or of the city of Bochum and its pubs.
During the April O-Days, German students were “campus guides” and responsible for introducing
studying at RUB, help with formalities and many insights in campus life. On 1 April, RUBiss and
ESN (Erasmus Student Network) hosted a “German evening”, including information of various
kind on Germany, German food and drinks as well as board games. Concluding the O-Week the
first steps in Germany and at the RUB were successfully taken and the studies can begin!

Grant of scholarships for international students
More than 50 international students applied for a grant of scholarships for the summer semester
2015. The selection committee of the International Office met at the beginning of March. 10
graduation grants and 2 scholarships for especially committed students could be granted. These
scholarships are funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) from funds of the
Federal Foreign Office.
The graduation grants are being announced every semester whereas the scholarships for especially
committed students are being announced every summer. This year Analia from Paraguay, a
Master student in Chemistry, and Hamid from Morocco, a Master student in Mechanical
Engineering have been awarded as especially committed students. If you would like to get involved
in extracurricular activities at RUB too, you can get inspired by our two persons receiving the
scholarships. Here we are presenting both of them:
