ReadyBOOT
ReadyBOOT - Diskless booting solution
IT Managers Main Headaches
1.
Cost, time, human resource for maintaining
multiple computers.
2
2.
Recovery cost for missing or corrupted data.
3.
Legal issue caused by using illegal license.
4.
Virus, Malware and Trojans.
5.
Security concern.
What is a ReadyBOOT?
Diskless Client
 Legacy personal computer without HDD and operating system.
 Pull the OS booting image from server when turned on.
 Pull an application image from the server and run the apps on client
using clients CPU, memory, and graphic.
The Server (ReadyNAS with ReadyBOOT server software)
 Connected on Gigabit or 10G network with SSD built in.
 iSCSi file transfer between server and client.
 Keeps Clients OS booting data and Application as an image file.
 Provides user data storage.

Requirements for ReadyBOOT
•
Gigabit network
 Gigabit NICs on client
 Gigabit managed switches ( better to have 10G uplink)
•
Servers
 ReadyBOOT Server S/W (Free bundle from NETGEAR)
 RAM required at least 16GB to server over 50 clients
 SSD drive for fast IO (RAID configuration)
 Usually two ReadyNAS required per site for redundancy
 Server NIC teaming will be required for better performance – Prevent network bottleneck
•
Clients
 Client license ( Approx. $50 per client ????)
 PC BIOS menu should be supported ‘Network Boot’ option.
 Better to have Wake on LAN (WOL)

Ease of Management
Having each user utilize the same image--the operating system as well as the
installed applications--reduces administrative and support costs.

Security – Viruses, and Trojans Gone
After reboot the client, the system will be restored to a clean
state without any Viruses, Malware and Trojans.

Only Administrator can modify O/S and
Application image data with special authority.
If client download virus infected file from
internet, it will be saved onto the data storage
part of the server. Virus will NOT be activated.

Diskless client shows almost same booting speed with SSD Drive.
It read/write via network so there is no HDD I/O delay.

Green - Hard Disk Expenses and
Electricity bill Saved
Spinning hard disk drives are the most common source of failure in computing devices today.
Without them, the shelf-life of a computing device increases considerably. Many diskless
workstations are self-cooling, they don’t require a spinning fan to keep the temperature
down inside the device. Without any moving parts diskless workstations are known for
significantly outlasting the shelf life of PCs.

VDI vs. SCS

Introduction
Costs
•
VDI will requires a major investment in server hardware, and
SCS
•
possibly in storage and network infrastructure. The total cost
of the server hardware, storage, and network equipment
might exceed that of procuring a basic PC for each user.
•
It may also needs additional Thin or Zero clients.
•
Graphics intensive desktops / applications may require

•
ALL-IN-ONE Solution
•

•
No performance reduction or
specific remoting protocols and increased expense. This also
affects video collaboration tools.
Server loads and
Performance

There will be heavy lords on Server because many of VM are

•
Historically, some VDI performance has been slower and
•
impersonal resulting in poor user experience.
•
improvement of client’s booting
and process operating speed
Poor performance if solution (stack) not well designed to
user need and for efficiency.
Usability and
Maintenance

•
IT manager will need a 3rd party tool for updates security
•
It shares single OS Image so updates

only one image and then all Clients
•
Printing often requires a 3rd party add-on
PC will be updated.
•
Scanning is not natively supported
•
Bi-Directional Audio is not natively supported
•
Display protocols not suitable for Graphics Design
•
You can use the PC like a general
desktop PC.
