The Jacksonville Onslow Chamber of Commerce has a proven track record partnering
with and supporting our local school system. The Education Golf Tournament is
the main source of the funding. We use this tournament to raise money for student
scholarships, our Salute to Excellence Program that recognizes a Teacher, Assistant
Principal and Principal of the Year, and the Sturgeon City Youth Leadership program.
Cash awards go local schools selected by the first, second and third place winners. I
hope you will give serious consideration into having a team at this year’s tournament.
If you are unable to play we would greatly appreciated a hole sponsorship ($160) or
88 promotional items to place in the golfers goody bags.

MILLIE CHALK PRESENTS THE DUKE ENERGY CITIZENSHIP & SERVICE AWARD
TO MAT RAYMOND JR. AND MAT RAYMOND III OF SANDERS FORD
America has a long and proud tradition of volunteer service. Duke Energy recognizes these efforts
by honoring citizens with the Duke Energy Citizenship and Service Award. As a kick-off to the
Jacksonville Onslow Chamber of Commerce Small Business Week, Mat Raymond Jr. and Mat
Raymond III of Sanders Ford were recognized for making a difference in our city, our county and our
state by using their time, talents, and compassion to positively impact the lives of others. Recipients
of the award help foster a culture of citizenship and service that acts as a catalyst for others to become
involved in civic and social activities. The Raymonds and Sanders Ford certainly foot the bill. Sanders
Ford vision statement is to be looked upon by their employees, customers and the community as an
honest and caring company; committed to providing a team-spirited workplace, a buying experience
unmatched in the automotive industry, service with integrity and integral support to our community.
And it must be working. Sanders Ford is now in it 77th year of business. They foster a sense of pride
in the work their employees do and the products they sell. Customers and employees alike are treated
with respect and all decisions made are in the best interest of those customers and employees. Sanders
Ford positively impacts the lives of others through their generous donations to numerous non-profits
and charities and other organizations in our community. Within the Chamber alone they encourage
our young citizens through their support of the Trades Day program. They honor and show respect
for our local law enforcement, EMS Service and Fire through the Chamber’s Annual Public Safety
Awards. They make it possible for the Chamber to celebrate the minority population in the county
by sponsoring our Minority Enterprise Development Week. And we it comes to our military, the
donation of time, monies and storage space for the Military Affairs Committee are exceptional.
There are always Sanders Ford employees and management at the Fish Frys working hard to make
the marines, sailors and coasties that live in our community know how much they are appreciated.
Mr. Mat Raymond Jr. was also a founding member of the North Carolina Automobile Dealers
Association’s “Support Our Troops” Program which raised more than $350,000 for families of those
service members killed in the War on Terror. Sanders Ford allows their employees to volunteer
for all kinds of fund raising events and serve on various Boards throughout the county. There are
dozens and dozens of charities and non profits, and organizations that benefit from this: United
Way of Onslow County, Coastal Carolina Community College, Jacksonville Onslow Economic
Development, Museum of the Marine, Wounded Warriors Program, Onslow Memorial Hospital
Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, Relay for Life of Onslow County, American Red Cross, Toys for Tots,
the Jacksonville Rotary Club, Onslow County Partnership for Children, the Governor’s Committee
on Military Affairs, North Carolina Community Foundations, Onslow County Special Olympics,
the Jacksonville Police Department’s National Night Out, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation,
High School Athletic Programs throughout Onslow County. And there are many, many others that
are fortunate enough to have the support of the Sanders Ford Dealership. Sanders Ford is also to
be commended for their efforts to shop local which fosters a culture of comradery between the
businesses in our county and means greater revenue for the business community. Congratulations to
Mat Raymond Jr and Matt Raymond the III, owners of Sanders Ford in Jacksonville and Sawnsboro
for being selected as the winners of the 2015 Duke Energy Citizenship and Service Award.

YEAR AWARD
The First Citizens Bank Small Business Person of the Year demonstrates excellence of knowledge and integrity
in their business or professional field provides a value to the Community is an active Chamber Member and
demonstrates the Small Business Committee’s Mission of support to our citizens, the military and local business
community.
This year’s winner is a Brad Padgett, co-owner of Bradley’s Jewelers. Bradley’s Jewelers is family owned and
operated and has been a part of the Jacksonville Community for ten years. Mr. Padgett has built a reputation
on honesty, integrity and personalized service customers can count on. He has set the goal that every employee
is to do their job in a timely and precise manner in every transaction. When you talk to Bradley’s Jewelers’
customers they say things like: “Amazing.” “Knowledgeable” “Top notch.” “Friendly.” “ Professional.” “They
are so sweet! We will definitely return.” One customer even says “Small-business like this is how America is
supposed to be!” Bradley’s Jewelers also gives back to the community. They join with other area businesses
in supporting the military through the Marine Corp Association Program that recognizes the top Marine,
Sailor and NCO of the Year from MCIE, is a supporter of the Camp Lejeune Officers’ Spouses’ Club and the
Semper Fi Fund. Area non-profits and foundations benefit greatly from Mr. Padgett’s generosity: The Onslow
Memorial Hospital Foundation, United Way of Onslow County, Onslow’s Walk to Cure Diabetes, the Legacy
Theater, the area Rotary Clubs, and the Team Hemmingway Fundraiser. The Chamber benefits from his long
time support of the Business Expo. He was willing to take a chance on a new Chamber venture when it started
the Engaged Onslow Bridal Expo two years ago. And anytime chamber staff members need direction, guidance
or a healthy dose of reality on what it’s like to run a small business, Brad is their go-to person. He has stated “I
can go to work and have fun. Loving what you do can help you be the best at what you do.” Bradley’s Jewelers is
a member of the Jewelers of America, the Diamond Council of America, and Mr. Padgett just became President
of the NC Jewelers Association. Congratulations to the First Citizens Bank 2015 Small Business Person of the
Year, the co-owner of Bradley’s Jewelers, Mr. Brad Padgett.

May’s Service Member of the Month
Cpl Cazares was born on October 28, 1994, grew up in El Paso, Texas and graduated from
Mountain View High School in June, 2013. Cpl Cazares parents still reside in El Paso. He is
married to Stephany, his high school sweetheart. He is a fan of fast cars, the Dallas Cowboys and
Coach K.
Cpl Cazares was on the school football and track teams. During his senior year he was named the
cornerback of the year. Cpl Cazares was also a track star winning 36 medals.
Cpl Cazares was inspired to join the United States Marine Corp by his cousin Cpl Dominquez, and
wanted to follow in his footsteps specifically for the pride and to be able to say, “I am a Marine”.
His cousin made himself a better life through the military and Cpl Cazares wanted to do the
same.
On September 9, 2013 he began his recruit training at Hotel Company, 2d Recruit Training
Battalion, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, in San Diego, California, where he quickly distinguished
himself from his peers and earned the position of Platoon Guide on Black Friday. He maintained
his position as Platoon Guide and earned the title of Honor Graduate on December 6, 2013 and
came out as a meritorious Lance Corporal. After graduation of subsequent combat training, Lance
Corporal Cazares completed his MOS training on June 27, 2014 and was designated MOS 5811,
Military Policeman. Lance Corporal Cazares reported to 2D Law Enforcement Battalion aboard
Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. On December 2, 2014, Cazares earned a
meritorious promotion to Corporal. February of this year, Cpl Cazares completed the Corporals
course earning the Gung Ho award for most motived Marine in the course. Cpl Cazares has also
maxed out with perfect 300s on his last two physical training tests and was declared the fastest
runner in the company. Cpl Cazares has won the National Defense Ribbon and Global War on
Terrorism Expeditionary Medal.
Cpl Cazares intends to make the Marine Corps a career. Afterwards he plans to join the Border
Patrol and then the D.E.A.

The Jacksonville Onslow Chamber of Commerce
Military Affairs Committee held its 2nd Fish
Fry of the season aboard Camp Lejeune. More
than 250 Marines and Sailors enjoyed a great
dinner of hand breaded fried fish, french fries,
homemade hush puppies and cole slaw. The
chamber sends out a big THANK YOU to all
the civilian and military MAC members who
donated their time and talents making this fish
fry a great success.

On May 12th the Jacksonville•Onslow Leadership group traveled to Raleigh to meet
with our Legislators. We were very fortunate that all four were able to take time to
meet with the class and update them on current issues. Thank you to Senator Brown,
Representative Cleveland, Representative Shepard and Representative Millis for your
time and your information.

On May 4th Chris White, A.A.E., Airport Director, Albert J. Ellis Airport was the guest speaker at
GAC. He gave an update on the airport renovations and additions. He also provided information
on how pending Bills H117 and S187 would affect the airport. H117 has passed and leaves a cap
on jet fuel tax. S187 exempts jet fuel from taxes; it is in the early stages of discussion.

Sand-Sational 8K Beach Run Returns to Onslow Beach July 11, 2015!
Onslow Beach is North Carolina’s best kept secret and located on Camp Lejeune’s
Atlantic Coast. It serves not only as a unique training area, but it’s also a fabulous
vacation getaway and home of the Grand Prix Series Sand-Sational 8K Beach Run.
This scenic course includes sand, dirt roads and pavement. Sand portions include
some areas where your feet may get wet depending on the tide. Register now and take
advantage of early registration discount. Registration is just $25 and guaranteed the
lowest price offered. Early registration also secures your commemorative shirt and
size. Early registration ends at noon on June 12. Everyone who completes the 8k
distance also receives a finisher medal.
This year’s race will also feature a 1-mile option, great option for beginners. Those
who complete this distance receive a 1-mile finisher medal only (no t-shirt or GPS
points will be awarded).

The Lower Cape Fear Human Resource Association (LCFHRA) is one of
550 affiliate chapters of the Society for Human Resource Management
(SHRM). Since 1968 it has served New Hanover, Pender and Brunswick
Counties and in February of 2015 the Jacksonville Member Service
Area was established to serve Onslow County.
LCFHRA is a non-profit volunteer organization. Membership is open to all
Human Resource professionals or college faculty, as well as undergraduate
and graduate students in business, human resources, industrial relations or
areas of business related to the field of human resource management.

Change is the air! Sometimes the environment that you have been working in has natural growth and adjustment and
creates the need to develop new plans of action. That is where we find tourism these days in Jacksonville and Onslow
County. The old days of spending our time and efforts solely on hospitality and marketing need to be expanded to
develop a new strategy. Our focus needs to shift and focus on room nights and generating more economic impact. With
the growth of the hotel market we need to grow our business market to go along with our sports market and leisure
markets. We can no longer assume that our rooms will be filled with family and friends of military or in the leisure
market with the beaches of Topsail Island.
The hotels that have been built or being built at this time have different pricing points and different targets that they
need to attract to pay the prices needed to maintain and flourish as a viable business in our communities. No one goes
into business without the hope of a profit; as the local tourism agency, we need to make sure we are helping our partners
in every way possible. If they are profitable then so goes everyone… the county will prosper in many ways – more jobs,
more business, and more people spending dollars within our borders.
The change is needed because in the past we have not had to worry about filling hotel rooms – we stayed about 90% to
95% full until about two years ago. Now we are running about 60% - we are above the state level, but not anywhere
near our past figures. Obviously marketing/advertising will play a major role in trying to recruit new business, but we
also want to ask for help from every business and citizen. It takes a village to raise a child; it takes a community to create
a thriving tourism base.
If you belong to any school, military, education, religious, professional, or fraternal organization that does monthly,
annual, or once in while meetings, conferences, trade shows, expos, reunions - we would like to ask that you provide our
office with a few details about the organization. We will reach out to find out what it takes to bring that entity to our
area for those events. It will save you travel time, help us educate folks about our area and bring dollars here instead of
you spending money in another part of the state or country.
We know we can’t host everything – especially huge events, but we definitely have the ability to do 500 attendees and less
events. It will take some planning to succeed, but we believe we have enough resources, partners, and creativity to help
make your special events successful! So just send the name of the organization, contact name and number, and the size
of the events you have been to in the past to [email protected]. We will take it from there…
