ORIGIN AND HISTORY OF MATURUCA INDIGENOUS COMMUNITY “SERRAS” REGION, INDIGENOUS LAND RAPOSA SERRA DO SOL LOOKING TOWARDS THE FUTURE OF LIFE TRADITIONALLY A COMMUNITY IS BORN WHEN A FAMILY CHOOSES TO LIVE IN A NEW UNOCCUPIED PLACE, WHERE GAME, FISH AND GOOD PLANTING AREAS ARE AVAILABLE • IN 1860 THERE WERE 7 COMMUNITIES SURROUNDING MATURUCA: CAMPO ALEGRE, CAMPO GRANDE, MALOQUINHA, QUINOZINHO, PEDRA PRETA, BOA ESPERANÇA, AND FLEXAL • THE FIRST INHABITANTS OF MATURUCA • IN 1927 TUSHAO MIRIKIOR TOOK LEADERSHIP OF MATURUCA SIBSTITUIR COM IMAGEM MELHOR Invasion by miners (garimpeiros), ranchers, salesmen, army and party politics in the community Maltreatment of indigenous people by miners and ranchers begins JACIR After much suffering the community met on 26th April 1977 to make a decision: No to alcoholic drink, yes to community! The meeting lasted 12 hours without interruption, not even to eat, also because there was no food. At the end a new tushao was chosen to lead the community: Jacir José de Souza.
