SURROUNDING MATURUCA: CAMPO ALEGRE,
CAMPO GRANDE, MALOQUINHA, QUINOZINHO,
PEDRA PRETA, BOA ESPERANÇA, AND FLEXAL
• THE FIRST INHABITANTS OF MATURUCA
• IN 1927 TUSHAO MIRIKIOR TOOK LEADERSHIP OF
MATURUCA

Invasion by miners (garimpeiros), ranchers, salesmen,
army and party politics in the community
Maltreatment of indigenous people by miners and
ranchers begins

After much suffering the community met on 26th April 1977 to make
a decision: No to alcoholic drink, yes to community! The meeting
lasted 12 hours without interruption, not even to eat, also because
there was no food. At the end a new tushao was chosen to lead the
community: Jacir José de Souza.
Action plan: collective work, organization, mobilization to get
our territory back, defend the people and their rights

WE INDIGENOUS NEVER RETALIATED AGAINST INVADERS
WE SUFFERED MUCH, WE WERE IMPRISONED, OUR HOUSES WERE BURNED DOWN,
WE FACED FEDERAL POLICE, GOVERNMENT AND ARMY.
THE WHOLE COMMUNITY TOOK PART IN THE STRUGGLE

LEADER OF MATURUCA COMMUNITY

cow-boys and drivers.
