created in 2002 to herald and celebrate the
extraordinary heritage and history of jazz
and its importance as an American cultural
art form.
Through local and national jazz fans
everywhere, JAM is intended to stimulate
the current jazz scene and encourage
people of all ages to participate in jazz: to
study the music, attend concerts, listen to
jazz on radio and recordings, read books
about jazz, and support institutional jazz
programs.

The sound of surprise describes both jazz itself and the enduring premise of
"The Annals of Jazz." Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising
on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to
Zorn. Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back
of Town anywhere.

Joelle Lurie
Jazz vocalist, songwriter, and actress Joelle Lurie is a regular at hip New York City venues
such as the Rockwood Music Hall and the Zinc Bar. She was also a soloist at the Boston
Holiday Pops, and on this week’s Song Travels, Lurie delights with a set of standards and
modern songs from her album Take Me There. Host Feinstein accompanies her on Our Love
is Here to Stay.

4/13 José Feliciano
Singer, virtuoso guitarist, and composer José Feliciano joins host Michael Feinstein for an
enchanting hour of conversation and music.The eight-time Grammy winner pays tribute to
Elvis Presley with selections from his 2012 album, The King, with performances including
Love Me Tender and Always on My Mind.
4/27 Jake Shimabukuro
Jake Shimabukuro has carried the sound of the ukulele from the shores of Hawaii to the
world’s concert stages. In his hands the humble “little guitar” sings everything from J.S.
Bach to the Beatles. This week, Shimabukuro performs Somewhere Over the Rainbow and
joins host Feinstein for a duet of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah.
John Pizzarelli
With his swinging and sophisticated style, guitarist/singer Pizzarelli makes music that
sounds both classic and modern. On this 2001 Piano Jazz, McPartland and John team up
for I Got Rhythm and his brother, bassist Martin Pizzarelli, joins in for It’s Only a Paper Moon.
Carmen McRae
Vocalist McRae (1920–94) was an expert of rhythm, deft phrasing, and personal, bittersweet
ballads. Her enigmatic, dark contralto voice placed her among the pantheon of female jazz
singers. On this 1985 Piano Jazz, McRae sings As Long as I Live and Carmen’s Blues.
4/15 Henry Mancini
Composer/arranger/pianist Mancini (1924–94) penned some of the most memorable tunes
of the modern era, winning 20 Grammys and 4 Oscars. This 1985 Piano Jazz finds him
sharing about his muse (the movie screen) and performing Days of Wine and Roses.
4/20 Ginny Mancini
Ginny Mancini performed with Mel Tormé and the Mel Tones before marrying fellow
musician, composer, and conductor, Henry Mancini, who passed away in 1994. He would
have celebrated his 91st birthday on April 16. Ginny shares stories of life with Henry Mancini,
her career, and Henry’s remarkable contributions to American film, television, and song.
4/22 Stanley Cowell
Marian McPartland hosted pianist Stanley Cowell for this 1999 Piano Jazz. Cowell bridges
traditional and contemporary styles of jazz, and he and McPartland challenge each other in
inventive duets, and Cowell performs his famous composition Euqipoise.
4/29 Shirley Horn
Jazz musicians have long admired pianist/vocalist Horn's (1934–2005) sensitive, relaxed
playing style and unique vocals that earned her comparisons to fellow jazz greats such as
Basie and Nat King Cole. In this 1995 Piano Jazz Horn performs Wouldn’t It Be Lovely.

Blue Note Records turned 75 last year. Tune in for highlights from the celebration at the
Kennedy Center stage, and reflections on the label’s influence with Norah Jones, Terence
Blanchard and Dianne Reeves. Blue Note artist Jason Moran guest hosts this episode.

Jazz Night in America marks the centennial of the birth of Billie Holiday with Grammy winner
Cassandra Wilson showcasing her blues, country and folk-tinged delivery, singing selections
from her newest recording highlighting the artistry of Billie Holiday.

In Philadelphia, from the 1950s–1970s, dozens of organists emerged and reshaped jazz into
a popular, swinging, danceable, yet artistically refined contemporary music. We go to the
source, for a concert from Philadelphia’s World Cafe Live paying tribute to three masters of
the jazz organ tradition: Jimmy Smith, Shirley Scott and Charles Earland. and we discover
exactly what made Philadelphia jazz organ culture thrive.
4/28 The Simon Bolivar Big Band and El Sistema
Highlights from the Simon Bolivar Big Band performing for the first time at Jazz at Lincoln
Center. The band is a student-based group, created in Venezuela in 2007 with the goal of
promoting jazz throughout the nation.
