Kick Off Memorial Day Weekend In Style!
On Friday, May 22nd, from 2 to 4pm, Jazz in the Afternoon will feature
Highlights from the 2014 Montclair Jazz Festival, hosted by S. Epatha
Merkerson, featuring Christian McBride, Antonio Sanchez, John Scofield,
Chuchito Valdés, Melissa Walker and the Jazz House Ambassadors. Then
at 4, we’ll celebrate the 88th Birthday of Bay Area Treasure and Living
Legend, the one and only, Barbara Dane with A Wild Woman Sings the
Blues…The Life and Music of Barbara Dane. Kick off Memorial Day
Weekend in style, on Friday, May 22nd, from 2-6pm, right here on KCSM,
the Bay Area’s Jazz Station.

THE ANNALS OF JAZZ WITH RICHARD HADLOCK

"The Annals of Jazz." Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising
on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to
Zorn. Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back

Emily King
Grammy-nominated vocalist and songwriter Emily King's musical journey has taken her far,
touring with John Legend and Sara Bareilles and the release of duets with Jose James and
Taylor McFerrin. In this edition of Song Travels, King performs her original songs Distance
and Georgia.
5/11 Jitterbug Vipers
Austin, TX based quartet the Jitterbug Vipers (vocalist Sarah Sharp, guitarist Slim Richey,
bassist Francie Meaux Jeaux, and percussionist Masumi Jones ) play 1930s-style viper jazz,
music that recalls classics by Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Cab Callaway. On this Song
Travels, the band presents a set sure to make you want to get up and dance!
5/18 Kat Edmonson
Vocalist and songwriter Kat Edmonson has played major stages across the country. She
performed on The Tonight Show and Austin City Limits. Her 2014 album, The Big Picture,
debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. This week, Edmonson shares her
original song Champagne and teams up with Feinstein for Long Way Home.

The music of pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba is a potent mixture of Cuban and American jazz.
His style is both melodic and rhythmic, filled with exciting and intriguing influences. He plays
everything from jazz to classical as well as music from his native land, Cuba. On this 1995
Piano Jazz he dazzled with pieces including Con Alma and Straight No Chaser.
5/20 Lionel Hampton
Vibraphonist Lionel Hampton (1908 – 2002) was one of the most influential figures in the
annals of jazz. He made the vibes a vital voice in the arsenal of jazz instruments and gained
international fame playing in Benny Goodman’s small groups and leading his own orchestra.
On this 1989 Piano Jazz, Hampton and McPartland duet on a set including Sweet Georgia
Brown and Mack the Knife.
5/27 Pamela Hines
Pamela Hines is a pianist and composer whose forte is a complex and engaging take on the
structural components of music within the jazz form. She brings nuances and impressive
technical abilities to all the tunes she plays, and as a composer, she draws out a theme from
every musician working with her. In this session from 2000, Hines performs her original tune
“Porridge.”

Prestige Records at 65!
Two years ago 26-year-old drummer, Jamison Ross, took first place in the Thelonious Monk
International Jazz Competition. His trio celebrates Prestige Records’ 65th anniversary, live at
Jazz at Lincoln Center.
5/12 Remembering Kenny Wheeler at the Royal Room in Seattle
Trumpeter Ingrid Jensen sings Composer/Trumpeter Kenny Wheeler’s praises and revisit his
music in saxophonist’s Steve Treseler’s home town of Seattle.
5/19 A Celebration of Joe Temperley at Jazz at Lincoln Center
For the past 25 years, saxophonist and clarinetist Joe Temperley, now 85, has been the
heart and soul of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. In his honor, his band mates debut
arrangements of Temperley’s Ellington favorites as well as his original music.
5/26 Our Point of View
Our Point of View is a leaderless super group of Blue Note artists featuring Lionel Loueke,
Marcus Strickland, Ambrose Akinmusire, Robert Glasper, Derrick Hodge and Kendrick
Scott, at Blue Note Record’s 75th anniversary in New York. Label president Don Was and
the musicians will tell stories about how Blue Note impacted their lives.
Sharon Freeman
In addition to being a lauded pianist, composer, and arranger, Sharon Freeman is an
accomplished French horn player. She has worked with many jazz greats, including Gil
Evans, Charles Mingus, Lionel Hampton, and Charlie Haden. On this 1988 Piano Jazz, she
demonstrated her skill as a pianist on standards such as Body and Soul and Heaven, along
with her own composition Waltz for Achim.

5/25 Jean-Yves Thibaudet
French pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet is one of the leading performers on today’s classical
music scene. He has more than forty albums to his credit, including interpretations of the
classical repertoire as well as music by George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, and Bill Evans. On
this edition of Song Travels, Thibaudet brings his unique perspective to Alec Wilder’s I’ll Be
Around and Gershwin’s Embraceable You.

Darren Johnston’s Wind Over Walls Quintet featuring Myra Melford at the Community
Music Center in San Francisco, on January 23rd, 2015. With trumpeter Darren Johnston,
violinist Matt Szemela, bassist Doug Stuart and drummer Hamir Atwal. The Youth showcase
Oakland Future Trio opens the evening.

Drummer Vinnie Rodriguez’s Quartet, in a tribute to Horace Silver, on March 28th, 2015, at
the Bird and Beckett Bookstore in San Francisco. With pianist Keith Saunders, trumpeter
Erik Jekabson and bassist Adam Gay.

Saxophonist and composer Jacam Manricks and his quartet, recorded March 29th, 2015,
at Chez Hanny in San Francisco. With pianist Ian McArdle, drummer Mike Quigg and
bassist Giulio Xavier Cetto.
