ANZAC Assembly
Last Friday we held a very special ANZAC assembly to commemorate the 100 year
anniversary of the beginning of the Gallipoli campaign during World War One.
Our special guest speaker was past Kuranui student, Private Adam Jackson. Other guests
were Lieutenant Colonel Bryce Gurney and Ian Juno from the Greytown RSA and Dick
Smith from the Featherston RSA.
Adam told the school about his career in the army since leaving the college in 2008 which
has included tours of duty in Afghanistan and East Timor.
To conclude his address, Adam played a very moving video which commemorated the
eleven New Zealand men and women who have died in overseas postings since the
Vietnam War. Adam reflected that ANZAC Day is still very relevant as wars continue to be
waged, New Zealand soldiers are still deployed all around the globe and they are still dying
in their efforts to secure peace in the world.

After Adam’s address, Head Boy, Walter Barber, recited “Flanders Fields” the famous
poem by John McRae from which the inspiration for the commemorative poppy was taken.
Liam McDonald then played the “Last Post” and “Reveille” as Robert Harwood-Watling
slowly dipped and then raised the New Zealand flag.
The assembly concluded with Lieutenant Colonel Bryce Gurney reciting the traditional RSA
ode taken from the poem “For the fallen” by Laurence Binyon.
Throughout the assembly a very special commemorative wreath of hand knitted
poppies,stitched onto a grey army blanket by students and staff, hung in front of the stage.

ANZAC Day
At dawn on ANZAC Day our student leaders marched in the Martinborough ANZAC
parade, helped to read out the names of soldiers from the area who died during WW1 and
laid a wreath.
After breakfast back at the college, the leaders all attended the Featherston parade before
splitting up to join in the Greytown, Lake Ferry and Carterton parades.
Thank you to all of the other students who joined the leaders at the various ceremonies to
lay wreaths, carry commemorative crosses or act as flag bearers.

Revised College Charter
After consulting with parents, students and staff in 2014 the Board of Trustees have
revised and refreshed the college’s Charter and Strategic Plan.

Fee Statements
The first fee statements for 2015 have been posted out. You will see that we have made
significant changes to the fee schedule. Fees are now only charged for subjects where
students will make items and take them home or consume them. Where this is not the case
no fees are charged.
To offset the reduction in income that this fee revision will cause the Board of Trustees
have raised the Donation Fee to $150.00 per student or $250.00 per family. The Donation
Fee allows the college to purchase the “nice to have” resources and equipment which the
government does not provide such as mini vans, the artificial turf, ceiling mounted data
projectors and modern computers.
Compulsory fees are however charged for all extra-curricular sport and cultural activities.
The government does not fund schools for any extra-curricular activities.
I encourage all parents to set up automatic payments so that small amounts of money can
be drip fed to the college to pay for fees and activities over the year.

shuttle’s as transport to school if you happen to miss the school bus and cannot get a ride

HPV vaccination survey – participants wanted.
Parents and caregivers of children and young people aged 9 – 23 years are invited to
participate in a survey investigating knowledge and attitudes around HPV vaccination. The
survey is anonymous and should take 5-10 minutes. Please access the online survey at

Warm Up New Zealand: Healthy Homes, which is run by the Energy Efficiency and
Conservation Authority (EECA) is aimed at households where:

the home was built before the year 2000

the home owner or main tenant has a Community Services Card

there are children under 17 years or adults over 65 living in the household
The programme is delivered by insulation companies working in most regions throughout

Nurse Practitioner
My name is Nicole Kolvenbag. I am a Nurse Practitioner at Carterton Medical. Some of you
might have seen me in the youth clinic at Carterton Medical.
I am now working alongside Rita in the Kuranui Health Clinic twice a week, replacing the
doctor. I am looking forward to meeting you!
Uniform News
The cold winter weather has arrived and students need to be warmly dressed. Parents,
please ensure that your child only wears regulation uniform tops and jackets. Students will
receive disciplinary consequences if they wear non regulation hoodies and jackets. All
uniform items except sports uniforms and blazers are available on the Argyle web site.

Want your kids to improve their ability to run Cross country or train for the primary schools

Athletics New Zealand’s developmental programmes, lead by the Mark Harris and Andrea

Featherston Consecration

The students helped to place crosses at the cenotaph bearing the names of men from
Featherston who lost their lives during World War 1.

Most of the Kuranui sports teams begin their competition this week. Thanks to our
volunteer coaches and managers for taking up their roles.

Football Boys- The 1 XI will be coached by Wayne Brasell and our 2 XI team will be
coached by Kees Muller. Due to the increased junior playing numbers this year, we will be

fielding a 3 team in the competition and we are still looking for some extra players. If your
child has not registered for a sport and is keen to play social football on a Saturday
morning, please contact Mr Yee at the Sports Office.

1 XV Rugby- Preseason started early for our rugby players with assistance from Stacey
Grant.
Coaching the team this year is Mike Tayles. The boys will be playing in the Wairarapa
competition this year with the majority of the games being played on the new artificial
surface at Memorial Park in Masterton on Wednesday evenings under flood lights along
with a couple of home games at the Martinborough Rugby Club.
Junior Rugby - Coaches Todd Evans and Vaughn Evans are pleased with the progress
and commitment the boys have shown in their two pre-season games and are both looking
forward to their first competition game.

Netball - Grading games start this week, and coaches for our teams are: Senior A- Janine
Legge, Senior B- Mel Graves, Intermediate A- Cindy Apiata, Junior A- Jane Cadwallader.

Hockey 1 XI Girls- Our girls’ team plays in the Wellington P3 competition and have
already played two grading games with a win and a loss. The team is coached by Emily
Jane.
Hockey Boys- Ten players are returning from the 2014 squad and coach Andrew Hosnell
is hoping the experience will get the boys through the hard games.
Mixed Hockey Team- Welcome to Brine Styles who will be coaching our team this year,
our team will be playing on Thursdays at Clareville.
Basketball- Grading games have already started with our Junior teams playing at the
Chanel Gym with Ken Ryan the coach. Pun Teofilo is the Senior Boys coach and they play
at the Makoura Gym.
Girls Rugby- Conditioning and Rugby Skill Sessions are held at the Memorial Park on the
new turf on Wednesdays’ 4.00-5pm, players most welcome to attend.
Chess Competition- This inter-collegiate competition will be hosted by Kuranui College on

Friday 15 May. There will be ‘Rookies’ and ‘Championship Competition’ the cost is $5,
and consent forms are available from the Sports Office door.
College of the Year- VOTE for KURANUI COLLEGE for College of the Year in the Times
Age Sports Awards. Official voting forms are in the Times Age and Midweek. You can vote
more than once, and voting forms can be brought to the MAIN OFFICE for us to send in.
