April 2015 Lancaster Striders PRESIDENT’S COLUMN SEA OF RED IN A OCEAN OF GREEN Hello fellow Striders and join me in welcoming some new officers to the Lancaster Striders. The installation of a new Secretary, Treasure, web master and news editor was completed during the March meeting. Welcome aboard to Mark Reist, Gary Guzek, John Barbaro and Katelyn McCadden. As with change comes a change into the next season of running. Spring is in the air somewhere and the Shamrock 8K once again continues to be the start of the Runner of the Year (ROY) Series. Well the ROY thing worked out, but I am still not sure mother nature is aware of how tired we are of winter. With just over 3500 runners at this years Shamrock run, the Lancaster Striders had a good showing of 78 of its members. Of this group, seven were awarded ROY series points for their efforts. Now if the ROY series awarded points for post race activities…..Striders would clean fair well. Photo courtesy of Mark Reist Aly Pyc Hats off to the successful return of Aly Pyc to the race scene. Its been a long road for Aly in her ambition to return to running. Some surgery, family illness and her husbands constant need to have surgery just to avoid shoveling snow has kept her from doing what she has come to love. Her last race was the Tops 5K in August of 2013 and has since then taken to the side lines waiting to heal up and set her goals on her return. That day finally came to her at the Mustache March 5K on 28 Mark 2015. In her own words. First race of the year & I finished in 42:40, well below my expected time of 45 min. I was able to run the whole course with only a few slow downs to a walk to catch my breath & just like a dog with a bone I dug back in. On my final "kick" I didn't know if my legs would hold up, but I kept saying to myself you are almost finished, you are not slowing down stupid! So I dug in gritted my teeth barely remembered to breath & I got the great finish I was pushing for. So very happy after the last year & a half of medical struggles & finally feel strong! - Aly Pyc Anyone who has ever had surgery or a long break from running knows all to well the difficulties associated with returning. That constant reminder of what you use to do vs. what you can do. Aly found the way to return and return she did. Congratulations to you and we all look forward to seeing you at the races. Welcome Back. 3 ONE MILE RACE SERIES Post Race one man welcoming committee MARCH ACCOMPLISHMENTS Congrats to all the Around the Bay Runners. Jude McCadden PR his 1/2 marathon 1:33:13/7:06 pace Shamrock ROY Points Denise Seelbach Stacey Curry Linda Gerbec Mac Mackenzie Edye Radice Dan Gemmer Ron Fancher This race series will be challenging to say the least. Probably one of the hardest race distances you will ever run and train for, while cursing yourself for doing it. So why not have a whole series of 5 races dedicated to this pure misery distance. The first race will be in West Seneca on 22 July followed by the GBTC track mile run on 4 Aug. The Mueller mile on 13 Aug with two more to follow. The Lancaster Strides will be hosting a one mile race in this series with a tentative date of 27 Aug at Como Park. The last of the races will be in Lockport sometime in September. Mark Brautlacht is leading the way on the Striders involvement and will pass along more information as STRIDER GLIDER UMBRELLA Did you ever wondered why Umbrellas were given away during the Strider Glider? From the distant Netherlands, residents in the town of Purmerend have been under attack from a eagle owl. The latest attack inflicted serious head wounds on a athlete while running with his trainer. The Town issued and advisory recommending citizens to arm themselves with an Umbrella to ward off any future attacks. The Strider Glider Race Committee took this warning serious….and now you know. Run Safe while in the Netherlands. HEALTH TIP: SLEEP The average adult requires 6-9 hours/day of sleep. A good night sleep will decrease stress, decrease inflammation and repair those sore running injuries and aches. Anyone wishing to report a PR or accomplishment. Please email [email protected] Alcohol interferes with the sleep process. TV and computer use before bed will interfere with the sleep process. Naps to make up sleep time is better than sleeping in late. 4 STRIDER GLIDER QUARTER MARATHON The 2015 Strider Glider Quarter Marathon will be held on October 31, 2015. In the next few weeks an announcement will be sent out looking for volunteers to form a race committee. If you have any input into the race , please share.
