The Algebra Placement Test is a 90-minute exam. Students taking this placement test
should be currently enrolled in a full year Algebra 1 course or have completed a full year
Algebra 1 course. The purpose of the exam is to determine if a student has thoroughly
mastered Algebra 1 concepts. A successful score would place the student in Geometry.
The Algebra Placement test is not used to determine level placement (Honors, College
Prep). As with any exam, the student must study ahead of time.
The exam contains problems similar to the Lauralton Hall Algebra midterm exam and
final exam. It is possible that a student will not be familiar with every concept at this
point. Students need to demonstrate an understanding of a majority of the concepts.
Students must show work with their solutions, as Lauralton Algebra 1 students must do,
to receive full credit for most problems. Students are advised to skip a problem if they
are unfamiliar with the topic. Students are permitted to use a calculator (graphing or
scientific). Cell phone calculators are not permitted. They must bring their own
calculator to the exam.
The nine-section exam is graded on 133 points. The sections, topics and assigned points
are:
I. Evaluate expressions:
4 points
II. Simplify expressions:
8 points
II. Scientific notation and exponents:
8 points
IV. Solve equations:
30 points
IV. Inequalities:
6 points
VI. Polynomials:
22 points
VII. Linear equations and systems:
27 points
VIII. Functions and function notation:
4 points
IX. Word problems:
24 points
We have found the website “Bright storm” a helpful site if our students need a quick
review. Any of the videos under the Algebra drop down menu would be appropriate.
