Congratulations to the six winners honored at the ninth annual Above the Bar Awards. Held Tuesday
evening at Pace Law School, the event recognizes the Westchester County legal community.
This year’s Most Promising Pace Law Student was Leigh Ellis. Leigh, pictured above, served as a pro bono
scholar in the child advocacy unit of Legal Services of the Hudson Valley during her sixth semester at
Pace Law School. She had previously served as a student attorney for the Neighborhood Justice Clinic of
John Jay legal Services and as a legal intern for the immigration unit of Legal Services NYC. She also
served as both a president of and a secretary for the National Lawyers Guild.
Receiving the Pace Setter Award was Jerold R. Ruderman of Wilson Elser Moskowitz Edelman & Dicker
LLP; Most Socially Conscious Attorney was Natanya L. Briendel of Pace Women’s Justice Center; Leading
Health Care Attorney was Gary S. Sastow of Brown, Gruttadaro, Gaujean, Prato PLLC; Leading Real
Estate Attorney was Frank S. McCullough Jr. of McCullough, Goldberger & Staudt LLP.
Keynote speaker Stephen J. Friedman, president of Pace University and former dean of Pace Law School,
gave a tribute to the late Alfred B. DelBello. During his career, Mr. DelBello served as the mayor of
Yonkers, the county executive of Westchester, and the lieutenant governor of New York. He was also a
partner in the White Plains-based law firm of DelBello, Donnellan, Weingarten & Wiederkehr.
The Above the Bar Awards are sponsored by the Westchester County Business Journal and Pace Law
School as well as Citrin Cooperman, Westchester County Bar Association, and Westchester Women’s Bar
Association.
