KISS program
(Keeping Independent Seniors Safe)
The Valley Area Agency on Aging is
proud to announce that it is offering the
KISS program (Keeping Independent
Seniors Safe) in Lapeer County. KISS
is a telephonic reassurance system that
keeps seniors and their loved ones worry-free.
Participants in the KISS program
can call the KISS office or receive a
telephone call every Monday through
Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m.
and 12:00 p.m. to make sure that the
participant is safe and well. Special
arrangements can be made for participants that need weekend coverage.
If the participant does not answer the
phone, the KISS coordinator checks
to see if there is a problem and verifies
that the participant’s telephone is in
working order. If they are unable to
reach the participant at this point, the
KISS coordinator then calls the contact
person provided by the participant and
asks them to check on the participant
to make sure they are alright. Contact
people are usually neighbors, friends,
or relatives. All participants in the KISS
program are required to provide a contact person. If this fails, a phone call is
made to the local law enforcement to do
a wellness check.
Through the KISS program, if you
or your loved one falls or has an emergency at home, they know that someone
will be checking up on them to make
sure that they are well once a day. This
is a great program for seniors who live
alone and are isolated from family and
friends, but it is not required. This
program is so important because it lets
seniors stay independent in their own
homes.
Valley Area Agency on Aging’s KISS
program requires the participants to
notify the KISS program when they will
be away so that the KISS coordinator
will not expect the participant to be at
home.
If you are interested in finding
out more about the KISS program,
please call Valley Area Agency on
Aging at 810-239-7671.

Protect Seniors from financial abuse
It’s unfortunate but true: The elderly
population is targeted for financial abuse
or exploitation. In fact, by some estimates,
this type of targeted abuse results in billions of dollars in losses each year. If you
have elderly parents, what signs should
you watch for to determine their vulnerability? And what can you do to help protect your parents from being victimized?
In regard to the first question — signs of
vulnerability — the most important thing
to watch for is your parents’ mental state.
As you know, many people go through
their entire lives with their faculties intact
— but even if this is the case with your
parents, you still may want to be on guard
against them falling prey to unscrupulous
operators. And if you have noticed your
parents becoming forgetful, confused,
overly agitated or showing any other signs
of possibly diminished mental capacity,
you may want to be particularly vigilant
for the appearance of financial irregularities.
If you don’t think your parents are, as
yet, victims of fraud or abuse, you can take
steps to help protect them. Most importantly, maintain constant communication
with them and be aware of what’s going on
in their lives. Also, consider the following
actions:
• Advise parents on precautionary measures.
Suggest to your parents that they take several common-sense steps to avoid financial
scams. For example, urge them to never

give personal information over the phone
or in response to emails. Since these types
of requests are the most common methods used to perpetrate scams, encourage
your parents to put all such solicitations
— as well as requests for money — in the
“trash” folder. Also, ask your parents to
remove paper mail promptly from their
mailbox — resourceful identity thieves
have been known to steal mail and extract
key pieces of personal information from
financial statements or correspondence
from Social Security. And if your parents don’t already have a paper shredder,
present one to them as a gift — and show
them how to use it to delete old statements, credit card offers and similar documents.
• Check for legal documents. Your parents,
like everyone, should have a will and a
durable power of attorney. These documents will enable someone they trust
implicitly to handle their finances if they
can’t. Discussing these types of issues with
Elderly Scam
Recently the Portage, Michigan Department of Public Safety handled
an incident at a local nursing home. A taxi driver showed up to pick up
one of the residents. Management was able to intervene and learn that a
suspect had called the taxi and sent them to the nursing home with the
resident’s name. They were to take the resident to the bank to help her
withdraw funds for her ‘nephew Paul.’ They were to then call the suspect back to learn where to send the funds. The resident does not have
a nephew named Paul. The cell phone numbers that were used by the
suspects are a dead end. Internet research indicates there have been other
cases in Michigan similar to this. Please be aware of this type of scam with
our elderly.

Series of Armed Robberies
There has been a series of armed robberies in the City of Flint,
Michigan and at least one in Mount Morris Township where it
appears to be the same suspects. In all cases, two black males enter
the businesses and go directly for the safe. The suspects are armed
with handguns and cover their face and hands. One suspect is roughly
6’, thin build. The second is roughly 5’6, muscular build. In at least
three of the incidents, the suspects used recently stolen vehicles. The
suspect vehicles were abandoned by the suspects a short distance away
from each scene where it appears they entered a waiting vehicle (possibly truck or SUV based on aggressive tire tread located at the end
of a K9 track). So far, there is a total of six related incidents. The first
armed robbery was on 3-18-15 and the most recent was 4-7-15. If you
have any incidents matching this M.O., please contact me.

your parents may not be easy — but it’s
certainly important.
• Review parents’ situation regularly. Many
parents are not comfortable sharing the
specifics of their financial situation with
their adult children. Yet, as much as you
can, try to periodically review your parents’ insurance, banking and investment
statements. These meetings give you good
opportunities to look for irregularities
or suspicious activities, such as significant changes in their spending patterns,
unusual cash withdrawals or transfers from
their bank accounts, or sudden transfers
of assets to a relative or someone outside
the family.
• Know the professionals. Your parents
may not be totally at ease involving you
with their financial and tax advisors.
However, using your discretion, see if you
can accompany your parents when they
meet with their advisors. If these people
are legitimate professionals, they will not
object to your interest in your parents’
affairs — in fact, they should welcome it.
Your parents have done a lot for you.
You can help repay them by doing your
part to help protect them from threats to
their financial security.
Edward Jones, its employees and financial advisors cannot provide tax or legal
advice. You should consult your attorney
or qualified tax advisor regarding your
situation.
