From John O’Groats to Lands’ End over 50 MPs come out in
support of new runway
MPs representing the length and breadth of the country have come out backing the call for a
quick decision to expand London and South East airports.
In a sign of increasing political support for decisive action following the election, over fifty
MPs have added their name to a list coordinated by the pro-expansion group Let
Britain Fly, saying that they want whomever forms the next Government to make ‘a quick
decision’ on airport expansion, once the Airports Commission publishes its final report.
The list of supporters includes:
- Louise Ellman MP (Labour), Chair of the Transport Select Committee;
- Graham Brady MP (Conservative), Chairman of the 1922 Committee of backbench
Conservative MPs;
- Stephen Gilbert MP (Liberal Democrat), Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on
regional aviation;
- A number of current Shadow Ministers and former Ministers.
Signatories range from MPs who represent key towns and cities across the entire UK
including Belfast, Blackpool, Bradford, Glasgow, Huddersfield, Liverpool, Sheffield, York and
many more.
Gavin Hayes, Director of Let Britain Fly said:
“There are growing numbers of MPs from across the political spectrum - and all corners of
the country – who understand the urgent need to expand London and South East airports in
order to support future jobs and economic growth.
“The clear message from Parliament and the backbenches is that they want the new
Government to make a quick decision on airport expansion.
“After over half a century of inaction the political procrastination has to stop, once the
election is out of the way we urge our political leaders to be bold and decisive on this issue.”
