ZANE CLARK/The Sun
It was all smiles for these two seniors and many more at Eastern Regional High School’s commencement ceremony for the class of
2015. Parents, family members, friends, faculty and of course the students themselves all turned out for the school’s 49th commencement ceremony on June 18. Despite some clouds in the sky, the students’ mortarboards stayed dry as the received their diplomas and
walked off the field toward their futures. For more photos, please see page 10. For a list of graduating seniors, please see page 11.
In Jules Verne’s classic novel,
Phileas Fogg attempted to make
his famous trip around the world
in just 80 days, but Fogg could
have learned a thing or two from
the students at Signal Hill Elementary School, who recently
made their own trip around the
world in only three.
This year at Signal Hill, June
15, 16 and 17 marked the school’s
second annual "Around the World
in Three Days" activities.
During the three days, students
spent their time educating one
another about the people, foods,
cultures, landmarks, geography
and almost anything else one

Fusion auditions
set for June 26
The Fusion Performing Arts
Center’s newest production for
the adult theater company is the
new, original musical “Adam's Redemption.”
This is a dark, bloody, slightly
disturbing musical about a vampire who wants to regain his mortality. This is no sparkly teen
drama, and inappropriate for performers under 17 years of age.
But for those who’d like to be involved in an emerging new work
with “teeth,” come audition. Men
and women of all colors, backgrounds, shapes and persuasions
are encouraged to join the cast.
Performances are the weekend
of Aug. 28, 29 and 30.
Auditions will be held Friday,
June 26 at 7 p.m. at the Fusion
Performing Arts Center, 1040
Voorhees Town Center.
Email [email protected] to
arrange an audition time-slot.
Performers are asked to prepare a short monologue and a
song. Dance and fight experience
are a plus, but are not required
for casting.

Parent voices anger
to BOE over attempts
to receive HIB report
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
A significant portion of the
public comment section of the
June 15 Voorhees Township
School District Board of Education meeting was dedicated to one
parent’s attempts to get information on the investigation of a Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying incident she said took place
against her child.
During the public comment
portion of the meeting, parent
Cynthia Kahn described how in
May, she called her child’s school
to report a HIB incident that happened to her child around the end
of March.
Kahn said she believed state
HIB guidelines required an inves-
tigation of the incident, with the
findings brought before the board
at the next May meeting after
Kahn reported the incident,
which Kahn said did not happen.
Kahn also described having a
meeting with Superintendent
Raymond Brosel Jr. and Assistant
Superintendent of
Business
Frank DeBerardinis, but believed
the incident was being “swept
under the carpet” and it was “absolutely disgusting.”
With a report on the findings of
a potential HIB incident on the
June 15 meeting’s agenda for approval from the board, Kahn said
she believed the law required the
district to release the findings to
her.

in our opinion
School’s out for summer!
Stay involved this summer, and help us be the best we can be
hrow your hats in the air, pick
up a beach chair, put on a nice
pair of sandals and relax ...
summer is here!
Life changes here in New Jersey for
two-and-a-half months once school
lets out for summer recess. The kiddies are home, which makes us change
our normal routine. Traffic eases up at
the typical before-school and afterschool rushes, and families head out of
town for vacation.
We here at The Sun don’t take vacations. Well, that’s not true, but our dedication to providing the best coverage
of town doesn’t waiver one bit. If anything, summer allows us to focus even
more on the special people, places and
things that make our town so wonderful.
Every summer, the end of the school

year means the temporary end of
school coverage – stories and photos
of students and teachers doing a community service project, of high school
sports teams and of noteworthy accomplishments. But that doesn’t mean
our pages will be blank.
True, summer often does signal a
slowdown in “official” town- and
school district-related business, but
there is plenty of newsworthy happenings around town to keep your interest
piqued.
Summer is a time when we often
reach out to you, our readers, for a little help.
• Have an interesting story idea
about an annual summer activity you,
your family and/or your local group
partakes in? We’d love to cover it.
• Know someone or something that
deserves to be spotlighted in a special
way? We’d love to write about it.
• Take photos of you and your family enjoying the warm summer weather, either in town or on your family vacation? We’d love to print them for
your neighbors to see.
Summer holds a special place in
everyone’s heart, even if you’re not a
lover of sometimes-oppressive heat.
Help us make this summer special by
keeping in touch, providing us feedback and helping us be the best paper
we can. Enjoy the season!
Voorhees packs in the activities around town
As the weather heats up, so do activities
in Voorhees.
On April 26, Voorhees Township celebrated Earth Day at Eastern Regional High
School. The event included many fun family activities and was coordinated by the
Voorhees Environmental and Cultural Education Foundation along with the Rutgers
University Center for Urban Environmental Sustainability.
On the morning of April 28, I attended
the meeting of the Key Communicators of
Voorhees, a roundtable discussion among
key opinion leaders in our community who
identify public opinion about the schools
and pass along information about the
schools to our community.
From May 1 to May 11, the Voorhees
Town Center again hosted a carnival to
benefit the NephCure Foundation. Thousands of people enjoyed great food, good
music and exciting rides for a wonderful
cause.
On
May
2,
Voorhees was once
again proud to be
the home of the

vaccinations to our dogs and cats.
On May 6, I was honored to be part of
Eastern’s 50th anniversary celebration.
For a half century, Eastern has molded the
lives of our young people.
On May 15, the Annual Animal Welfare
Association Paws & Feet 5K Race & Doggie
Fun Day was held at Cooper River Park.
The event included pet contests, demonstrations and entertainment. Money raised
goes toward the adoption center and the
care of homeless animals.
On May 20, the monthly luncheon meeting of the Voorhees Business Association
was held at Rodizio Grill. The VBA provides a forum for business persons and
businesses in the Voorhees area to meet
and to share and discuss concerns and interests of a civic, commercial, cultural and

Eastern BOE discusses status
of district goals at June meeting
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
At the June 17 meeting of the
Eastern Camden County Regional School District Board of Education, the district gave a status
report on its goals for the 20142015 school year.
The list of goals consisted of
four objectives set by the district’s
advisory council, which includes
members of the BOE, student
leaders, staff members, committee members and administrators.
According to Robert Cloutier,
director of curriculum, instruction and professional development, the goals were increasing
the performance of students with
disabilities on state assessments
in English and math, increasing
the number of 11th- and 12thgrade students taking at least one
AP exam and AP course, and increasing overall daily attendance.
Regarding students with disabilities, Cloutier said in 20132014, which is the latest school
performance report available,
there was a slight improvement
in math scores to 49.1 percent, but
the district still did not meet the
state target of 70.8 percent.
“The state has significantly
moved the target about 5 percentage points each year, which is far
surpassing our improvements,”
Cloutier said.
For English scores in 2013-14,
Cloutier said the district was at
78.2 percent, and although that
was below the state target of 80.5
percent, the district met the confidence interval and therefore was
counted as meeting the target.
Cloutier credited improvements in the English curriculum,
and said for math, the district is
continuing to improve on the assessments and benchmarks and
hopes to fill a vacant special education position with someone
who is highly qualified in math.
For the second district goal of
getting more students grades 11
and 12 to take at least one AP
exam, Cloutier said the last
school performance report had
27.8 percent of students doing so,
which was a steady improvement
but still below the 35 percent
mark the district set for itself.
For the third goal of getting
more students in grades 11 and 12
to take at least one AP course,
Cloutier said the number was
currently at 39.8 percent, just
under the 40 percent goal the district had set. Cloutier noted that
this year about 800 students took
at least one AP course, and for
next school year, students with requests for at least one AP course
were already more than 900.
“This summer, we are sending
six teachers to AP summer institutes. In past summers, we’ve
only sent two teachers on average,” Cloutier said.
Eastern Principal Robert Tull
Jr. spoke about the fourth district
goal of increasing attendance,
and said the district was doing so
through initiatives such as building a “net” around students who
miss days, starting early in the
year and including conferences
with parents.
For the 2015-2016 year, Cloutier
spoke of a fifth goal to be added,
which would be research into a
new bell schedule that would
allow students to take eight classes throughout the year by moving
to a common lunch.
Fourth of July concert
and fireworks
By Freeholder Jeffrey Nash
The Freeholder
Board will host the
3rd annual Camden
Waterfront
Freedom Festival
and Fourth of July
fireworks display
on Saturday, July 4,
2015. The festival is
set to run from 5:00
to 9:30 p.m. and will
include concerts, a veteran’s tribute and conclude with a spectacular,
world-class
fireworks
display over the Delaware River.
We expect more than 150,000
visitors to Wiggins Waterfront
Park this summer for events
ranging from great entertainment like the Fourth of July Fireworks and Sunset Jazz Series to
activities such as waterfront yoga
and workout Wednesdays. My
colleagues on the Freeholder
Board and I know how much residents enjoy the outdoors, and we
strive to continually improve
Camden County's parks so that
they provide maximum entertainment and fun for the whole
family.
The Freedom Festival will feature a variety of fun activities for
children to enjoy, including jugglers, face painting and inflatable
bounce houses. For adults, the
festival will also feature a Beer
Garden, with local brewers, distillers and vineyards like Flying
Fish, Cooper River Distillers and
wine from Sharrott. Free event
parking will be provided at the
Waterfront, courtesy of the City
of Camden Parking Authority beginning at 4 p.m.
The Independence Day festivities begin with the dedication of
the Camden County Veterans
Stage and an American Music
Tribute to our veterans by the
Philharmonic of Southern New
Jersey at 5 p.m. The music con-
tinues at 6:30 p.m.
with Kathy Sledge,
the legendary voice
of We Are Family.
Blood, Sweat and
Tears takes the
stage at 8 p.m. followed by a fireworks show over
the Delaware River
at 9:30 p.m.
The Freedom Festival continues with Military Appreciation
Day on July 5 as Camden County
salutes our troops with discounted admission to the Adventure
Aquarium
and
the
Battleship New Jersey. The Battleship New Jersey offers active
military, WWII veterans and former USS NJ crewmembers free
tours.
We invite everyone to come out
to the Camden Waterfront for a
weekend full of music, food, fireworks and fun for the entire family. We hope you can join us as the
region’s largest fireworks show
lights up the Delaware River.
Wiggins Waterfront Park is located at Riverside Drive and Dr.
Martin Luther King Boulevard in
Camden. All of the events are
made possible through a joint
partnership between the Camden
County Freeholder Board, the
City of
Camden, WMGK

me a copy of this, because your
attorney said not to call the
school because it’s supposed to go
through him? So maybe someone
can address up there when can I
expect a written copy of the findings of the HIB?” Kahn asked.
Board President Richard Nelson informed Kahn that as she
had hired an attorney to deal
with the matter, she and her attorney would have to go through
BOE solicitor Howard Mendelson
and not the board regarding the
situation.
Kahn said the district was ignoring phone calls and emails
from her and her lawyer, which
Mendelson denied.
“We are in fact talking with
each other,” Mendelson said. “If
he has represented to you that I
am not talking to him, that is not
in fact true.”
Mendelson said the public BOE
meeting was not the appropriate
venue for the discussion, suggested she was reading the law incorrectly, and several times suggested she speak with her lawyer.

• Board member Rich Wojdon
spoke regarding a Milestone

for having served 30 years on the
Voorhees Township Board of Education.

Wojdon said while the award
does mean “something,” it was all
the educators before him and in
the district who meant “everything.”
“You are what make the system,” Wojdon said. “All we have to
do is vote ‘yes, we want that person here,’ and seeing all of you
stand here, I know we made a
heck of a lot of right decisions.”
• Jeanne DelColle of Stockton
University’s teacher preparation
department presented the district
with the university’s gratitude for
allowing Stockton teacher candidates to mentor with Voorhees
teachers.
DelColle also thanked the district for doing so while simultaneously dealing with several education reforms in the past several
years,
such
as
evaluation
changes, Common Core State
Standards and Partnership for
Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers testing.
• Retiring Eastern Regional
High School chemistry teacher
Michael Harrison spoke before
the board about concerns that
some students weren’t entering
high school with a framework in
mathematics skills necessary for
science classes.
One suggestion Harrison offered was to find a way for Eastern and Voorhees teachers to
meet and share feedback.
• The next meeting of the
Voorhees Township BOE is
scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 26
at the district administration
building.

ONE BIG HAPPY FAMILY
Residents and families love the warmth &
hospitality of Voorhees Senior Living:
“Mom absolutely loves life at Voorhees
Senior Living! With wonderful new friends,
and caring staff who go above and beyond
for residents, she quickly decided to turn
her 30-day respite stay into her permanent
new home. That was six months ago, and
now we are all one big happy family!”

EVENT

could think of from various countries around the world.
Students dined on foods from
foreign lands, viewed student-created banners that illustrated features of various countries,
marched in flag parades, learned
to say hello in different languages, played games from different cultures and took part in all
sorts of other multinational
learning experiences.
Signal Hill teacher Daniel
Riggs said the idea for the
"Around the World in Three
Days" event first came last year
when the school was faced with
an unusually late school year,
having been forced to close for so
many snow days in the winter.
Riggs, along with fellow teachers Jenna Gallo and Cherise
Stankovitch, decided to collaborate and find a way to give the
kids something to do with that
ZANE CLARK/The Sun

extra time while still educating
them, and soon "Around the
World in Three Days" was born.
“The three us just kind of
brainstormed and thought we
have so many children in our
school from different backgrounds that we might expose the
children to the rest of the world,”
Riggs said.
Riggs said another big component of the activities was students being able to take tours of
the school and listen to fifth-grade
student experts detail information on replicas of world landmarks that had been created by
other students with the help of
art teacher Kate Palumbo.
“Each landmark had a fifthgrade landmark expert who used
their own time outside of school
to research those landmarks and
prepare very interactive presentations for the whole school,”
Riggs said.
Stankovitch said the event also
had the added bonus of allowing

the halls to still be fun, decorative
and educational at the end of the
year where normally staff would
be taking everything down, including bulletin boards that had
questions posted to quiz students
on their knowledge of different
countries.
“Usually at this time of year,
it’s really hard to get them to
learn any new information, so
this is a way,” Stankovitch said.
“They were all engaged, excited,
learning so much. They all want
to travel around the world and see
these places now.”
The school even had a large
world map on the wall inside near
the main entrance, with photos
from trips children and their families have actually taken.
“It’s neat to see where all the
children have traveled, and
they’re quite traveled,” Gallo
said.
Principal Sharon Stallings said
the event was just another way
the school could continue with its
mission to “Inspire, Engage and
Innovate” with its students and
the ways they learn.
“Our school is very diverse,
and it’s an opportunity for all of
us to learn different things about
each other,” Stallings said.

ed the monthly meeting of the
Camden County Mayor’s Association. This year, I am honored to be
president of the group. The association affords area mayors the
opportunity to discuss issues and
share useful information concerning our respective municipalities.
On Memorial Day, I was honored to participate in the annual
memorial services at Mt. Zion
A.M.E. Church and Ashland Presbyterian Church. I was once
again privileged to be the guest
speaker at the Annual Kirkwood
Memorial Day Parade which honors the fallen heroes who paid the
ultimate price for our freedom.
Thanks to the volunteers on the
parade committee, particularly
the Vandergrift family, the
Voorhees Township Fire Department, our police department and
the Eastern Marching Vikings for
making the parade and ceremony
memorable.
On May 30, our schools held a
Color-A-Thon at Connolly Park. A
great day was had by all while
raising money to support the Parent Faculty Associations of VMS,
ET Hamilton, Osage and Kresson
schools. On the same day, the
Voorhees Cultural and Diversity
Committee, along with the Camden County Human Relations
Commission, sponsored a conference at Legacy Hall in Voorhees
addressing anti-bullying and new
immigration laws.
On June 3, I enjoyed the 11th
Annual Wine and Food Tasting to
benefit the Alicia Rose Victorious
Foundation. The event featured
fine wines, draft beers, spirits and
great food from around the world.
The foundation installs teen centers in hospitals throughout the
country to bring hope, excitement
and entertainment to teens facing
difficult conditions while receiving hospital treatment.
On the evening of June 4, I enjoyed Columbia Bank’s networking event held at The Mansion. It
was a great opportunity for our
community’s various businesses
to gather to exchange ideas and
enjoy great food and drinks.
On the evening of June 11, I
was honored to be part of the
JFCS program, Right In Our
Backyard. The event helped educate students and parents about
developing increased addiction
awareness in the community and
stopping addiction-related deaths.
Heroin addiction is an epidemic
and must be addressed. Later in
the evening, thousands gathered
at Connolly Park to enjoy the first
show in our 2015 Summer Twilight Series which featured “Beginnings: A Tribute to Chicago.”
On the morning of June 13, a
Kirkwood Lake Clean-Up and Nature Walk was held. Later in the
morning, I was part of Philippine
Independence Picnic Celebration
at Cooper River Park. Hundreds
enjoyed a day long celebration of
the Filipino heritage. Later in the
day, I was honored to be part of
the Voorhees Senior Club’s Annual Luncheon and administer
oaths to the new officers. The day
also included the Relay for Life of
Cherry Hill/Voorhees. I once
again enjoyed the American Cancer Society’s emotional event to
save lives and create a world with
more birthdays by helping people
get well, stay well and find a cure
for cancer. The same evening,
HOPE Church hosted Summer
Fest 2015 which included music,
prayer and a chance to enjoy
friendship.
On June 17, Rodizio Grill hosted the monthly luncheon meeting
of the VBA. Later in the day,
Rodizio Grill also hosted the
monthly dinner meeting of the
Camden County Mayor’s Association.
On the afternoon of June 18, I
was once again honored to take
part in Eastern Regional High
School’s graduation ceremony.
Congratulations to all of the
graduates!
On the morning of June 20, the
Stafford Woods Golf Course hosted the 2015 Stafford Open. Disc
golfers from all over the east coast
enjoyed our facility.
On the evening of June 22, the
Philadelphia Union and Rodizio
Grill hosted “A Town Takeover”
at the Voorhees Town Center. The
event offered an opportunity to
meet members of the Philadelphia Union Soccer Team as well
as enjoy inflatable games, giveaways and prizes.
Upcoming events include the
Annual BocceBrooke Tournament on June 28 at Kirkwood
Park beginning at noon. The
event brings our township’s
neighborhoods together for a fun
day of bocce, food and drink.
On July 15, the monthly luncheon meeting of the VBA will be
held at Legacy Hall, 333 Preston
Ave. in Voorhees.
• The second show in our Summer Twilight Series will be on
Thursday, July 16 (rain date July
23) and will feature “Evolution: A
Tribute to Journey.” This performance will re-create the history and hit songs of the legendary
band. The show is free and starts
at 7:30 p.m. at Connolly Park.
• From July 20-25, the Voorhees
Police Department will hold its
2nd Annual Junior Police Academy. The program teaches our
young people from the ages of 12
to 16 to appreciate and respect the
duties and life of a police officer.
Interested parents and applicants
can contact Lt. Dennis Ober at
(856) 882-1110 ([email protected]).
Applications and forms for the
Junior Police Academy can be
