Reading Deuteronomy 24:1-4 1 2 Reader: David Kloosterman “When a man takes a wife and marries her, if then she finds no favour in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, and she departs out of his house, 2 and if she goes and becomes another man's wife, 3 and the latter man hates her and writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out of his house, or if the latter man dies, who took her to be his wife, 4 then her former husband, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before the LORD . And you shall not bring sin upon the land that the LORD your God is giving you for an inheritance. Reader: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Children come forward for prayer before leaving for Children's Ministry. Please stand for the Gospel. Reader: Steve Bessada Gospel Matthew 5:31-32, 19:3-10 Reader: All: Reader: All: The Lord be with you. And also with you. The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 5 3 1 “It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32 But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. 19 3 And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?” 4 He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’? 6 So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefo re God has joined together, let not man separate.” 7 They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” 8 He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. 9 And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.” 10 The discip les said to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” Reader: The Gospel of Christ. All: Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Sermon "Marriag e and Divorce" The Rev. Tim Haughton "Teaching of the King: Sermon on the Mount" Series Missed a sermon? Listen again? Share with others? He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Celebrant: Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant: All: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise. Celebrant: We give you thanks and praise, almighty God, through your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Saviour and Redeemer. He is your living Word, through whom you have created all things. Please sit or kneel. By the power of the Holy Spirit he took flesh of the Virgin Mary and shared our human nature. He lived and died as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. In fulfillment of your will he stretched out his hands in suffering, to bring release to those who place their hope in you; and so he won for you a holy people. He chose to bear our griefs and sorrows, and to give up his life on the cross, that he might shatter the chains of evil and death, and banish the darkness of sin and despair. By his resurrection he brings us into the light of your presence. Now with all creation we raise our voice to proclaim the glory of your name. All: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth of your glory are full. Hosanna hosanna hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. 6 Celebrant: Holy and gracious God, accept our praise, through your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ; who on the night he was handed over to suffering and death, took bread and gave you thanks, saying, “Take, and eat: this is my body which is broken for you.” In the same way he took the cup, saying, “This is my blood which is shed for you. When you do this, you do it in memory of me.” Remembering, therefo re, his death and resurrection, we offer you this bread and this cup, giving thanks that you have made us worthy to stand in your presence and serve you. We ask you to send your Holy Spirit upon the offering of your holy Church. Gather into one all who share in these sacred mysteries, filling them with the Holy Spirit and confirming their faith in the truth, that together we may praise you and give you glory through your Servant, Jesus Christ. All: All glo ry and honour are yours, Father and Son, with the Holy Spirit in the holy Church, now and for ever. Amen. The Lord's Prayer Celebrant: As our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to pray, All: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. 7 The Breaking of the Bread Celebrant: All: Celebrant: All: Celebrant: Lord, we died with you on the cross.
