Welcome to Collegetown for the 2015-2016 academic year. We are so glad that you will be spending the year with us! Collegetown is a unique and exciting living environment that offers many options to students. Whether you have chosen the “downtown” living feel of Cascadilla or Sheldon Court, being close to downtown Ithaca at Schuyler House, the smaller and more intimate 112 Edgemoor, we know you will have fun here with us next year. Join our Faculty Fellows for interesting discussions, come to an event put on by the RA staff, or join the student government groups. There are many ways to get involved and still have time for your studies, friends, and fun. Our residence halls are close to the great food and cultural activities that the Collegetown area has to offer. Get ready for a great year! Casc & Sheldon include a high concentration of Transfer students and we plan events specifically catered to their needs in addition to the needs of returning upperlevel students. Please join us and help build a strong community where we can all support and help one another. Summer 2015 112 Edgemoor Sheldon Court C-town Staffing Residence Hall Director (RHD) The RHD is the full-time professional staff member that manages everyday administration, long-range planning, and supervision of student staff, in addition to serving as the judicial hearing officer and supporting the residence hall student government. This staff member typically has a master’s degree in a field related to working with college students, such as student affairs or counseling. The RHD also lives in the building and is available for emergency response. Stop by the RHD office any time to chat, hang out, or get answers to your questions. Assistant Residence Hall Director (ARHD The ARHD is a graduate student at Cornell. Residing in Schuyler House, the ARHD works with the RHD to support programming, help students, and enforce policy for all the residence halls. Resident Advisors (RAs) & Senior RA (SRA) RAs/SRA are Cornell students just like you. They provide on-call emergency coverage for the building, enforce University and residential policy, put together fun events for you to attend, and are available to help you with anything you need. RA/SRA doors are open for your questions or even just to talk. Each floor/community has at least one RA/SRA, and in some cases two, that you can ask for help. Service Center The Service Center for the Cascadilla, Sheldon, and Edgemoor area is located in Cascadilla Hall. Schuyler has its own service center. Mail and student keys are handled through these centers. If you are locked out during their normal business hours, for example, you can get a spare key from them to get back into your room. Facilities Staff Full-time professional Facilities staff care for the housekeeping and maintenance of the C-town areas. Bathrooms and common areas are sanitized regularly. Work orders placed by residents for broken items are handled by trained professionals in a timely manner. This staff is dedicated to providing you with the best physical environment. They are not maids, however, and residents are expected to clean up after themselves and follow posted policies on common area etiquette and respect. Facilities and Residential Programs staff work closely together to keep each other informed of building issues. 2 Leadership OpportunitiesSummer 2015 Residential Student Congress (RSC) RSC is the student leadership body representing all residential students at Cornell. The group meets weekly to discuss pertinent issues regarding our residential communities, decide on funding, and host a variety of events including the Big Red Chill. The RSC is a great way to have your voice heard, plan some fun events, or simply get some more leadership experience. Each residence hall will elect representatives to the RSC. These representatives are the voice for all residents in the building. If you would like more information about RSC or our available positions, please contact your RHD at [email protected] for more information. Schuyler House Hall Council The hall council has the ability to plan fun events for the students in the area and put forward proposals for internal policy changes. As the voice of the students in the community the hall council officers work closely with their RA advisors, the ARHD, and the RHD. Representatives from the hall councils also attend RSC meetings and serve as reps for their specific area. Collegetown is a past winner of “Top Hall Council” as the most represented and active group on the RSC. There are three hall councils for our area: Cascadilla, Sheldon Court/Edgemoor, & Schuyler House. If you would like to make an impact on your community and gain valuable leadership skills as a hall council officer or RSC general assembly representative from our various hall councils contact the RHD at [email protected] by August 30th to indicate your interest in running for a position. 3 Summer 2015 + Staff Introductions RHD Brandee Nicholson Hi, everyone! I am Brandee and I will be your RHD this year. This is my seventh year as the RHD of Collegetown and my eighth as an RHD at Cornell. Previous to working here I also worked with students at Rutgers University, SUNY Cortland, and the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. I am originally from Bethel, Alaska- a very small rural town, and I went to undergrad and grad school at UAF. I have a master’s degree in Community Psychology, and I love working with college students. I live in Cascadilla along with my partner. ARHD Mike Maffie-Office Sheldon Court & Schuyler House Mike grew up in Ohio, but moved to Ithaca almost five years ago to help coach the Cornell debate team. After working for a few years, Mike decided to avoid the real world at all cost and enrolled as a graduate student in industrial relations. After finishing the Masters of Industrial and Labor Relations (MILR) degree, he enrolled in the MS/PhD program in Labor Relations. Mike studies non-union dispute resolution systems and how these systems influence employment discrimination litigation. In his free time, Mike writes for a baseball blog (go Reds!), plays guitar, and, when feeling adventurous, attempts to play tennis. If you ever want to toss a baseball, play guitar, or chat, feel free to stop by. 112 Edgemoor SRA Leanne Fernandes Hi! My name is Leanne Fernandes and I'm the SRA in Edgemoor.
