Engage 94 - Admiral Collingwood Lodge
e-newsletter No. 94 engage! I was delighted to attend the Grand Installation of the new Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of South Australia and the Northern Territory, Most Worshipful Brother Stephen Michalak. This was the first Australia and New Zealand Grand Installation since Victoria’s in March 2014. The delegation of Victorian Freemasons comprised 50 Freemasons together with their partners as one of the largest if not the largest interstate delegation. A series of events was conducted from Friday through to Sunday, all of which were very welcoming and enjoyable. In addition to this wonderful delegation, the toast (one of the best I’ve heard) to the new Grand Master was proposed by our own Brother Felix Pintado – Chief Executive, Royal Freemasons (our Homes), whose friendship goes back to when they were each in their early twenties. A number of us are looking forward with great anticipation to the Grand Installation events in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory which will take place in early August. Other Victorian Grand Officers not in Adelaide attended the Grand Installation of Most Eminent Companion Peter Crick as the new First Grand Principal of the Supreme Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Victoria. I congratulate the First Grand Principal together with his co-Grand Principals and Grand Officers on their Installation and wish them every success in the coming year. I look forward to continuing the close association we enjoy with Supreme Grand Chapter. As this issue of the Newsletter goes to press, the Centenary of ANZAC Day will be commemorated. It is customary that the Grand Master lays a wreath at the Shrine of Remembrance as part of the day’s program and this year will be no exception. This part of the service commences at 8.15am. ANZAC Day, originally a commemoration of the landing of Australian and New Zealand forces at Gallipoli on the 25th of April 1915, has grown to become perhaps the most important national day in Australia. In addition to recognising the service and sacrifice of all Australians who have served in war or on peacekeeping operations ANZAC Day has become core to the identity of Australia itself, a day on which Australians reflect on the ANZAC spirit and its place in Australia today. 416,809 Australians enlisted to serve in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF). This accounted for 38.7 per cent of the Australian male population aged between 18 and 44. In Victoria 114,000 enlisted, 89,000 served overseas and 19,000 did not return home. Lest We Forget. MWBro. Hillel Benedykt Grand Master ANZAC DAY 25 April 2015 Dawn Service On the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli landings, join millions across the world to honour Australian service and sacrifice. One minute of silence will be observed. It is recommended that visitors assemble on the Shrine Forecourt between 4am - 5am. Riding for a great cause T News he boys from the Victorian Freemasons Cycling Club were out in force on Sunday 19 April for the MS Society Melbourne Cycle Challenge! Rain, hail or shine, nothing was going to stop the team from completing the 50 km ride from one side of the city to the other. Participants Basel Alogaidi, Malcolm and Milton Mann, Cyril Land and Darren Hill donned the square and compasses jerseys and took off from Princes Park, rode through the Docklands to Albert Park, peddled up to Footscray and wound their way back to Carlton North through North Melbourne. Darren Hill, Cyril Land, Milton and Malcolm Mann at the start line, ready for the big ride. The team, from Diamond Valley Lodge and Wodonga Lodge had collectively raised a whopping $3084 for the Multiple Sclerosis Society, through individual donations and contributions from other Lodges. Team Captain for the event, Malcolm Mann said that despite the weather, it was a great ride. “The Team are very proud to wear the square and compasses jerseys today. It’s more than just a ride, it gives us purpose and great exposure for Freemasons Victoria,” Malcolm said. Milton Mann and Cyril Land enter the half-way point rest stop oin good form. Freemasons Victoria Communications Manager, Gabrielle Forman met the Team at the half-way rest stop to cheer the boys on. “It was great to see the boys so dedicated. They’d made it to the half-way point unscathed, and were keen to continue the last leg of the challenge,” she said. The MS Melbourne Cycle Challenge is hosted every year, and since 2007, has been fundraising to providing services and support for Australians affected by this baffling and debilitating disease. Multiple Sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system affecting more young adult Australians than any other neurological condition. Approximately four Australians are diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis every day, equating to more than 1000 new diagnosis every year. Freemasons provide crisis relief funding F riday the thirteenth can be quite lucky for some! On that day in March a presentation of $11,100 was made to 4C’s (Cardinia Combined Churches Caring), a Church based emergency relief organisation working within and for the residents of the Shire of Cardinia. This money was donated as a result of the efforts of Freemasons Victoria’s Peter Lees of Gippsland Forest Lodge and Darren Spargo of Pakenham Lodge who were sponsored to undertake a bike ride. Their donation was then equalled by the Freemasons Foundation. Installation at Baxter Lodge No. 934 The Installation of the Worshipful Master of Baxter Lodge No. 934 took place on Monday 6 April 2015 when WBro. Johan Heinrich Zylstra was installed in the Chair of King Solomon. The Proclaiming Officer was VWBro. Mark Eadon PGDC. News Freemasons Foundation Victoria Director, VWBro. David Gibbs was on hand to present the cheque to the CEO of 4C’s, Pastor Don Press. “The Crisis Relief Centre sees up to 250 people a day, either for emergency relief, emergency housing, family counselling, financial counselling, no-interest loans and food parcels”, Don said. Being totally reliant on gifts and grants this money will go a long way to assist in the funding of the centre and is just another example of Freemasonry’s ideals, brotherly love, relief and being out there in the wider community. Freemasons Victoria would like to thank Padma Mirip Singpo, who has been working voluntarily at Freemasons Victoria for two weeks. Padma completed a number of tasks for various staff and was always courteous and cheerful. Padma has recently found employment working for Alliance as a Customer Service Representative. Portland Secondary Students benefit from re-engagement program P ortland Secondary College recently received a cheque for $10,000 from the Portland Lodge and the Freemasons Foundation, to go towards the College’s Re-engagement Program. The program, which has been running since 2011, has been set up to support young people who are, for various reasons, struggling within main stream education. News Chairman of the Portland Lodge Community Project Committee, Ian Berry, said that the contribution to the school was invaluable. “Some of the students in the program have been bullied and taken out of school for home schooling. The re-engagement program enables them to resume their education pathway in an environment free of judgement. Students who have completed the program often go on to continue their studies at University”, Ian said. Portland College Principal Toni Burgoyne was recently quoted in the Portland Observer, “Funding is allocated to employ a student welfare coordinator and a literacy and numeracy Assistant”, she said. Graham Dines, recently donated $400 to IntroFish. News Introfish provides fishing excursions for people with disabilities. The organisation is Victoria’s only dedicated boat and land based fishing service for those with special needs. It provides rehabilitation Paul Bennett with RWBro. Uwe Lau of Lodge of activities, working directly Australia Felix No. 1. with carers, coordinators, therapists and parents using various methods of fishing to work with motor skills, including hand-eye coordination and muscle and reflex movements. The donation was made after Paul Bennett, Founder and President of IntroFish visited the Lodge and gave a very inspiring talk about the rehabilitation and therapeutic benefits of sailing for those with an intellectual disability. Paul talked about his journey, and that in 2002 his third child was born with Cerebral Palsy. He said that he was confident he could teach him fishing, as he had taught fishing for many years, but his son passed away several weeks later. In a huge effort to turn this tragedy around, Paul developed IntroFish, which since its inception, has become very popular. The business came to a halt though when expansion became impossible without a good sized boat. The only option at the time was to purchase a used boat and have it repaired to make it seaworthy. No one would have ever expected Paul’s turn of bad luck, but the vessel was stolen one evening when the boat repair shop was broken into. Paul’s boat has never been seen since. With the on-going support from community organisations and individuals, Paul Bennett has continued to run IntroFish, at $500 a trip, which includes the hire of a boat plus a barbecue lunch. He is also finally in a position to purchase another boat, so as to continue to provide this much needed service to the public. For all your personal and business legal needs. T he Mason Unique Vehicles Group recently visited the ‘Alma Doepel’ Sailing Ship restoration project. Members braved hectic city traffic to experience the history and activities of the 112 year old vessel. The Alma Dopel operated as a supply ship to various military facilities during WWII, one of these trips skippered by one of the MUV Group members (the then Sgt.) Max Schey. News Bro. Graeme and Val Webb and members of the restoration support group were pleased to receive a cheque presented by our MUV Group member MWBro. John Evans on behalf of the Group. The donation will assist with the purchase of a very robust plank which will form part of the hull of the restored craft. The MUV Group’s name will appear on an Honour Board, which will be positioned aboard the ship. The exterior of the Alma Dopel. Michael Maher T he first Master Masons ‘On the Road’ visit was to Lodge Amalthea No. 914 on Tuesday 24 March to deliver a presentation on The Hung Societies of China. Ceremony of the Vacant Chair Admiral Collingwood Lodge No. 13 The presentation, delivered by WBro. Michael Maher was well attended by a number of Master Masons (both visiting and Amalthea members). News After the presentation a lively Q&A ensued for 20 minutes, including input from a visiting Past Deputy Grand Master from British Columbia weighing in on the Hung Societies of Vancouver and San Francisco. Lodge Amalthea’s excellent south followed at Zio’s restaurant in East Melbourne. Though over a thousand years older and half a world away, if you attend a Lodge of the Hung Society of China Triangular Seal of the Hung Society you will see a man being initiated in a Translation: Big, vast (represent power). manner strikingly similar to that carried out in Masonic Temples across Victoria every week. You will hear a spoken ritual which would strike chords of recognition, and familiar oaths being taken. You will find a Master and his wardens, and deacons leading a candidate around the Lodge, and you would recognise signs and symbols. The Ceremony of the Vacant Chair will be performed by members of the Admiral Collingwood Lodge No. 13 on Tuesday 28 April at 7:30pm. Very little is known of the origins of the Hung Society. Scholars credit the Buddhist patriarch Hwui Yin with founding the order in 386 AD. There are similarities in the Hung ritual with those of ancient Egyptian mystery schools, but this does not necessarily infer that the society evolved from Egypt. Perhaps both go back further in time to a common ancestor. Similar to Freemasonry, the society Flags of the five founders. has a three fold purpose - teaching morality and brotherly love; using allegory to demonstrate the life and death of man; and to give instruction regarding a mystical journey through the underworld to paradise and the holy place of the Gods. These three purposes and the fact that the triangle plays an important part in the ritual caused the society to become generally known as the Triad Society. (Triad meaning a group or union of three). This presentation was compiled by Bro. Raymond Copley after many years of extensive research and is a fascinating look at another fraternal society with so many similarities to Freemasonry. Unfortunately Bro. Raymond was unavailable to deliver the presentation himself. Hosted by Bro. Yuri Kurmanei, the Ceremony will be held at the Ivalda Masonic Centre in Ivanhoe. Don’t forget, $15 entry also gets you a raffle ticket for some great prizes! Please contact Lodge Secretary WBro. Wayne Motton to RSVP at: [email protected] or call 0407 326 840. Kumano Kodo Walk for Cancer 2016 M any members would know that Communications Manager, Gabrielle Forman is about to take on one of the biggest challenges of her life - the Kumano Kodo Walk for Cancer, in Japan. The eight day walk, hosted by Epworth Hospital, follows a series of ancient pilgrimage routes and sacred trails through the dense forests of the Kii Mountains overlooking the Pacific Ocean between the historical capital cities of Kyoto and Nara. News All proceeds raised from the excursion will go towards the Epworth Oncology Ward, to assist the thousands of cancer patients who continue to receive care at Epworth Hospital. FMV Communications Manager, Gabrielle Forman. Gabrielle has established a sponsorship campaign, an ‘Everyday Hero’ website, https://kumanokodo2016.everydayhero.com/au/gabrielle She now needs your help to make sure she reaches her goal! I strongly encourage each Lodge to consider donating the proceeds of one of their Lodge raffles to this very worthy cause. Gabrielle wil be seeking dollar for dollar support from the Freemasons Foundation for all contributions made by Lodges. The total cost for the trip is $5790 of which $2500 is tax deductible. Every dollar you donate equals every step Gabrielle will take in being able to give something back to those in need. Participating with a group from the Epworth Hospital, Gabrielle said the trek is a challenge she is determined to conquer. “The Kumano Kodo Walk for Cancer will be a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the kind of team camaraderie, the enormous sense of achievement in raising funds for charity, and the accomplishment at having conquered a physically demanding overseas trek,” she said. Cancer is the leading cause of death in Australia, and another 128,000 new cases are diagnosed every year. A cancer diagnosis is truly frightening so you need to know that you can get the best possible care, and that is exactly what this trek helps Epworth provide. Visit https://kumanokodo2016.everydayhero.com/au/gabrielle to make your individual or Lodge donation today, or call Gabrielle Forman on (03) 9411 0101 for more information about how you may be able to help. PARO Interactive Therapeutic Robot Seal 2015 Appeal A Royal Freemasons initiative focussing on delivering a better quality of life for customers with Dementia. Royal Freemasons seeks your support to buy Therapeutic Robot Seals for our dementia aged care customers. These are some the first therapeutic robotic seals to arrive in Australia. They will allow the documented benefits of animal therapy to be experienced by Royal Freemasons residents across Victoria. The purchased baby seals will be part of a research study to understand how they can improve quality of life for residents and caregivers. The robotic pet has five kinds of sensors: tactile, light, audition, temperature, and posture sensors, with which it can perceive people and its environment. By interaction with people, it responds as if it is alive, moving its head and legs, making sounds, and showing the user’s preferred behaviour. The robot provides the benefits of animal therapy to people in facilities. Some of the benefits are: • Reduce customer stress and their caregivers • Stimulates interaction between customers and caregivers • Psychological effect on customers, improving their relaxation and motivation • Improves the socialisation of customers with each other and with caregivers The financial support required to purchase the therapeutic robots is just one of the initiatives Royal Freemasons has committed to in its continuing efforts to help its aged care customers.
