Hercules Wimbledon AC News April 19th 2015
HERCULES WIMBLEDON AC NEWS & RESULTS W/C April 19, 2015
It was a ‘mix ‘n’ match’ of a weekend as far as team competition for HW went with a noshow in the SLAN meeting, a sprinkling of athletes in the Kinnaird/Sward trophies at
Kingsmeadow and an encouraging start for the track events in the Ebbisham League.
The Ebbisham U15 boys relay shone despite ¾ of them being U13s!
This weekend sees HW making their debut in the Southern Athletics League (for men &
women) with their fixture at Bracknell while the Virgin Money London Marathon will have
some 22 club members taking part plus no doubt a host of youngsters competing for their
respective Boroughs in the Mini-Marathon.
Best of luck to all concerned.
At Bracknell, Heather Letley will responsible for looking after the ladies section of the team
so please contact her on [email protected] if you wish to be considered for either team
selection or officiating.
For the men duties have been split with Liam White ([email protected]) looking after
the middle-distance runners, Juan Hernandez ([email protected]) the sprints and
jumps, and Stuart Milton ([email protected]) the throws.
Please contact any of the above as a matter of urgency if you are available to compete.
ARE YOU RUNNING LONDON?
In alphabetical order I understand that the following 23 members will be toeing the line in
London on April 26th.
Andrew Blake, Alastair Brown. Stewart Bond, Tom Cheetham, Joe Clark, Guy Cotter,
Monika Crouse, Rob Draper, Gary Forde, Gina Galbraith, David Gold, Ian Grey, Claire
Grima, David Grima, Charles Hampden-Smith, Caroline Jackson, Amandine King, Dominic
Kiralfyi, John Krause, Robert Tuer, Maurice Sharp, Dennis Williams and Frank Wood.
Tom Cheetham tells me that this will be his 60th marathon so hopefully he will celebrate it
with a sub-3 hour clocking.
One HW who has had to withdraw if Khalid Diaw who tells me that, “Three weeks ago, I
picked an ITB and what also looks to be shin splints. The only time I have run since was a
Tuesday session I did more than two weeks ago. So, sadly, I am going to pull out of London,”
adding, “quite unfortunately, when I was running at my best for a long time.”
Dave and Claire Grima will go for a couple of beers at the Cask and Glass on Victoria Street,
SW1 5HN.
(http://www.shepherdneame.co.uk/pubs/victoria/cask-glass) after the race and it would be
great if they could be joined by other HW runners and spectators
HERCULES WIMBLEDON OPEN MEETING – NEXT WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29
Hot on the heels of the Young Athletes Meeting, the first in a series of three HW Open Meetings at
Wimbledon Park is on Wednesday, 29th April (see timetable below). We are also introducing the HW
Club Championships which will be spread across these three meetings. For the April 29th meeting the
Championship races will be the 100m, 400m and 800m (i.e. the athlete clocking the fastest time in
each gender/age group will be Club Champion). The Club Championships over 200m, 1500m and
5000m will feature in the August Open Meetings (the 5th and 19th, details of which will follow later
on).
It goes without saying that any help from non-competing members would be appreciated. Just turn up!

ON YOUR BIKE JOE TOOMEY!
Joe Toomey who has hit some fine running form of late now turns to two wheels and is
seeking your support in a most worthy cause.
“I am swapping my trainers for wheels and taking part with three colleagues in the
London to Paris bike ride this year in aid of the Breast Cancer Campaign. The plan is
to complete the 280 mile journey over the course of three days and to arrive in Paris on
the 29th June. Our target is to raise £1000 each meaning we will (hopefully) raise over
£4000 between us. I would be very grateful for any sponsorship towards this very
worthy cause. Sponsorship can be made by following this link”:

AS REPORTED IN THE GUARDIAN! – TRUE OR FALSE?
The sprinter Richard Kilty is willing to bet £30,000 he can beat the Arsenal pair Héctor
Bellerín and Theo Walcott in a race.
According to reports, right-back Bellerín is the fastest man at Arsenal over 40 metres, having
beaten Walcott’s record. The reports claim he clocked 4.42 seconds, quicker than Usain Bolt
reached the 40m mark in his world record run over 100m.
But Kilty, who added the European 60m crown to his world title in Prague last month, said
there was no chance Bellerin was that quick.
The 25-year-old said on Twitter: “Media claiming @HectorBellerin can run 4.42 over 40m.
Absolutely no way. Are these journalists complete morons?! I will put £30,000 on the line to
race @HectorBellerin & @theowalcott any sprint distance, any time, any place, anywhere.
The race will be over very quickly. So if they put their money down I will gladly show
everyone they cannot sprint as fast as the media claim.”
Kilty’s comments followed an online blog from the former sprinter Craig Pickering, who was
part of the British quartet who won 4x100m relay bronze at the 2007 world championships.
Pickering, who also competed for Great Britain in bobsleigh at last year’s Winter Olympics
wrote a post enititled ‘Speed & footballers’ on his personal website that questioned the
newspaper reports.
“Let’s examine the logical fallacy of this headline/story,” he wrote. “Is it likely that a young
footballer, who has to practise a wide range of skills, including actually kicking a football, as
well as tactical and other fitness demands, could be faster than someone whose job it is to just
focus on covering distances of 200 metres or less in as short a time as possible?
“That someone with almost perfect genetics, who spends 6 days per week honing his
unbelievable talent, would be beaten over 40 metres by someone who does a bit of sprint
training? That the fastest person by almost a country mile to ever walk this planet is not as
good at HIS job as a Spanish under-21 international footballer?
“Clearly, it’s stupid.”
