MANATEE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER April 24, 2015 U.S. Secretary of Education Names Manatee Elementary 2015 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School April 22, 2015 Managing Director of the White House Council on Environmental Quality Christy Goldfuss joined U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan to announce that Manatee Elementary, in Viera, FL is among the 2015 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools award honorees. “I am so proud of the Manatee Elementary community for the years of hard work to make our school environmentally friendly which lead us to this prestigious award,” said Carl Brown, Principal of Manatee Elementary. “Being green and teaching our students the importance of protecting the environment for future generations is a lifelong learning experience.” In total, across the country, 58 schools and 14 districts were honored for their exemplary efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, promote better health, and ensure effective environmental education, including civics and green career pathways. In addition, 9 colleges and universities were honored for the Postsecondary Sustainability Award. Duncan and Goldfuss made the announcement at the U.S. Department of Education, in Washington, DC. “These honorees are compelling examples of the ways schools can help children build real-world skillsets, cut school costs, and provide healthy learning environments,” Duncan said. “U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools are an inspiration and deserve the spotlight for embodying strong examples of innovative learning and civic engagement. We also are thrilled to add institutions of higher education to the list of honorees this year for the first time in the award’s history.” Carl Brown Principal MANATEE GIVES BACK As you are spring cleaning, please save any close toed shoes, gently worn clothing and gently used backpacks for K-12th graders. Kennedy Middle School participated in the 21st annual Earth Day Groceries Project! Their Gifted Panther Class, Dartmouth Students, Yale Students, and Cambridge Students decorated paper grocery bags with environmental messages. On Earth Day, April 22, these bags were passed out (full of groceries) to shoppers from a local grocery store. Besides carrying an environmental message, each bag also had the name of their school and some wonderful artwork. They want to send a very clear and positive message that Kennedy Middle School cares about their environment.
