Sunday Bulletin - Manhattan Presbyterian Church
Manhattan Presbyterian Church The Lord’s Day, June 14th, 2015 To all who are spiritually weary and seek rest; to all who mourn and long for comfort; to all who struggle and desire victory; to all who sin and need a Savior; to all who are strangers and want fellowship; to all who hunger and thirst after righteousness; and to all who will come, this church opens wide her doors and offers welcome in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome We are so excited you can be here today to join in worshipping the God of the universe with Manhattan Presbyterian Church. We love God and are thrilled to see God build this local church body for the furthering of His Kingdom in Manhattan, Kansas. We know visiting a church can lead to a lot of questions and we’d love to help you find answers so please ask. Again, we’re really glad you’re here. Sunday Information Nursery Nursery is provided on the north side of the building (to the right from the entryway) for children 4 and under, but they are also always welcome in the service. Restrooms Restrooms are located in the entrance hallway. Children’s Church/Worship Training In the future we plan to have a time for preparing older children for participating in the Sunday worship service. This will allow children to worship with their families before being dismissed prior to the sermon to learn more about how and why we worship God. Currently they remain the whole service or go to the nursery. Why Robes? Brian & Travis wear robes during the service which might seem odd. This has been a tradition of the church for many centuries. It helps connect us to our past heritage. The robe also helps emphasize the office of the pastor and de-emphasize the personality of the men in the pulpit. It serves to take notice away from what Brian & Travis are wearing that particular Sunday, thus focusing us away from their terrible fashion senses and onto Christ himself. At first it may seem odd, but after a few services you won’t notice it, which is partly the point. 1 LIFE IN MANHATTAN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH NEWS & EVENTS Sign Up for the MPC Weekly Update Email Every week we send out an email with info about upcoming church events as well as community events you might be interested in. Today we are highlighting one of our Core Values below, but you can learn details of all of our Core Values & Distinctives at ManhattanPres.com Living in Covenant Community When we say we seek to be a covenant community, we are saying we desire to be a community that is committed to the growth, provision, and care of all its members. The Scriptures tell us there are things that we should do for each other as joint members in God’s Covenant of Grace. The first and foundational one is love. In John13:35, Jesus says, “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” We desire to be a church that is known for our love for one another (Galatians 6:10) in response to God’s love for us (1 John 4:19) and that love as a distinguishable fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). We are committed to being a community who has a true understanding of what it means to be in the family of God as we meet to worship on Sunday and as we look for opportunities to serve each other and with each other with compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness and patience (Colossians 3:12-13). 3 SERVING Serving If you would like to use your gifts and time to serve please let us know. I am graven on the palms of his hands. I am never out of his mind. All my knowledge of him depends on his sustained initiative in knowing me. I know him because he first knew me, and continues to know me. He knows me as a friend, one who loves me; and there is no moment when his eye is off me, or his attention distracted from me, and no moment, therefore, when his care falters.” - J. I. Packer Standing God invites us to worship Him, we respond to His invitation. Call to Worship From Psalm 106:1, 48 Pastor: Praise the Lord! For he commanded and they were created.” Psalm 148:7–8 “Praise the LORD from the earth, you great sea creatures and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy wind fulfilling his word!” Words: Saint Francis of Assisi Music: German Tune Public Domain 6 GOD CLEANSES US Standing Pastor Brian Hough Prayer of Adoration This is a prayer of praise and adoration for who God is. This prayer focuses on the glory and honor of our great and mighty God, but also asks God to help us worship Him. Lord’s Prayer Each week after the Prayer of Adoration with one voice we Our Father which art in heaven, pray the Lord’s Hallowed be Thy name. Prayer. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. 7 AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Affirmation of Faith Standing Heidelberg Catechism Question 26 Pastor: What do you believe when you say: I believe in God the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth? People: That the eternal Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who out of nothing created heaven and earth and all that is in them, and who still upholds and governs them by his eternal counsel and providence, is, for the sake of Christ his Son, my God and my Father. In him I trust so completely as to have no doubt that he will provide me with all things necessary for body and soul, and will also turn to my good whatever adversity he sends me in this life of sorrow. He is able to do so as almighty God, and willing also as a faithful Father. Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen, amen Catechism is a strange word. It’s basic meaning is “to teach orally.” They are written as a series of questions and answers designed to teach the people of God a summary of what the Scriptures teach, also called doctrine. The Heidelberg Catechism was written 1563, there are 129 Questions and Answers. Gloria Patri is a brief historical praise to God which clearly sets forth Trinitarian understanding 8 CONFESSION OF SIN Sitting Because sin is so pervasive in both our corporate and individual lives, Christians are called to come before our holy God with honesty and transparency, confessing our brokenness and asking for both forgiveness and healing through Jesus Christ. We Confess Our Sin O Lord our God, you know us better than we know ourselves. As we come before you now, believers and doubters alike, we all share a deep need, for we are all lost without your grace. Search us, O God, and know our hearts, test us and know our troubled thoughts. Give us true repentance. Forgive us all our wrongs. Transform us by your Spirit to live for you each day, to learn to serve each other and, through the grace of Jesus Christ our Lord, to come at last to heaven. Amen. See 1 John 1:9 for more on confession. Silent Confession of Sin The Words of Assurance declare the good news that all those who hope in Jesus alone to make them right with God are forgiven, not based on their own merits, but based on God’s promise of salvation in Christ. Words of Assurance 9 Romans 5:8–9 “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.” PSALMS, HYMNS AND SPIRITUAL SONGS In Christ Alone In Christ alone my hope is found; He is my light, my strength, my song; This cornerstone, this solid ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My comforter, my all in all— Here in the love of Christ I stand. In Christ alone, Who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save. Till on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied; For ev'ry sin on Him was laid— Here in the death of Christ I live. There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain; Then bursting forth in glorious day, Up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory, Sin's curse has lost its grip on me; For I am His and He is mine— Bought with the precious blood of Christ. No guilt in life, no fear in death— This is the pow'r of Christ in me; From life's first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No pow'r of hell, no scheme of man, Can ever pluck me from His hand; Till He returns or calls me home— Here in the pow'r of Christ I'll stand. Standing 1 John 4:10–11 “In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” Words & Music: Keith Getty & Stuart Townend Copyright © 2001 Kingsway Thankyou Music ccl# 11250329 10 PRAYER & FELLOWSHIP Standing Members of the congregation greet one another with a sign of friendship such as, “The peace of Christ with you” and the response, “And also with you.” Passing of the Peace From 1 Peter 2:25 Pastor: Let the peace of Christ dwell in your hearts. We were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of our souls. The peace of the Lord be with you always. People: And also with you. 1 John 4 Sitting Pastoral Prayer The Pastoral Prayer is a prayer offered by an elder during the service of worship for, and on behalf of, the congregation. Reverend Jon Dunning 11 Jon is the RUF Campus Pastor on the campus of Kansas State University WORSHIP THROUGH GIVING We Give Our Tithes and Offerings The offering is a way for Christians to support the church’s mission and ministry. Christians give back to God a portion of all the resources which God has given. We give as an act of faith and gratitude in response to God’s grace to us. Sitting We include Tithes and Offering in the service because we view it as a means of participating in worship. If you are guest today please feel no obligation to give. Words for Reflection We offer our gifts to you, Lord, with grateful, cheerful hearts. Thank you that you meet our needs on the journey, providing what we need when we need it. Trusting you, we can share what we have with others, and we do this joyfully, together, today, in Jesus` name, Amen. 12 PREACHING OF GOD’S WORD From the English Standard Version (London: Crossway, 2010) As the Bible is the primary means by which God speaks to and edifies His people, we read and listen to the Scriptures together in worship. In ancient Israel and the early church, services of worship were organized for the public reading of Scripture - a practice vital to building up the community of faith. A sermon is not just a teaching for living; it is mainly a time when Christ encounters His people through His Word. 13 Known: Psalm 139 Pastor Brian Hough Isaiah 40:8 “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” 1. God Knows All Things, Omniscient (v 1-6) 2. God Is Everywhere, Omnipresent (v 7-12) 3. God Has Made You Specifically (v 13-18) 4. God’s Enemies Are Our Enemies (v 19-22) 5. A Confident Prayer of Commitment to God (v 23-24) HYMN OF RESPONSE For the Bread For the bread which you have broken, For the wine which you have poured, For the words, which you have spoken, Now we give you thanks O Lord. By this pledge that you do love us, By your gift of peace restored, By your call to heaven before us, Sanctify our lives O Lord. (2x) Standing 1 Corinthians 10:17 “Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.” With our sainted ones in glory, Seated at our Father’s board, May the Church that waits now for Thee, Keep love’s tie unbroken Lord. In your service Lord defend us. In our hearts keep watch and ward. In the world where’r you send us, May your kingdom come O Lord. (2x) Words: Louis Benson Music: Kevin Twit ccl# 11250329 14 GOD COMMUNES WITH US The Lord’s Supper Communion is a sign and seal for those who believe in Jesus Christ alone for the forgiveness of sin. It's not for good people. It's for you if you believe and embrace that you are worse and more messed up than you ever dare to admit; and yet you are more loved and accepted by our Savior than you had ever dared to hope - this is because of the life, the death and the resurrection of Jesus for you. You will be invited to come forward. We serve wine, but also offer grape juice for those who prefer for reasons of personal conviction. Children are welcome to come with their parents. Each child should talk with the elders about his or her belief in Christ before taking the Lord's Supper. Please contact us to do that at a future date. If you are not taking the Lord's Supper with us today, we don't want this to be an awkward time. You can come forward and an elder will pray with you or you may stay seated and pray one of the prayers provided on the next page. We're glad you're here today. Words of Institution Pastor: Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: People: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Pastor: Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed for us. People: Therefore, let us keep the feast. Pastor: The gifts of God are for the people of God. Come eat and drink with thanksgiving. Prayer of Thanksgiving 15 GOD COMMUNES WITH US The prayers below are provided as guides for your silent, individual prayer during the Lord’s Supper PRAYER FOR THOSE SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH Lord Jesus, you claim to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent and convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen. PRAYER OF FAITH Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to offer me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen. PRAYER OF COMMITMENT Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen. 16 GOD SENDS US And Can It Be Standing Words: Charles Wesley; Music: Thomas Campbell 1. And can it be that I should gain An int’rest in the Savior’s blood? Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued? Amazing love! How can it be, That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me? Amazing love! How can it be, That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me? 2. ’Tis myst’ry all: The Immortal dies: Who can explore His strange design? In vain the firstborn seraph tries To sound the depths of love divine. ’Tis mercy all! Let earth adore, Let angel minds inquire no more. Amazing love! How can it be, That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me? 3. He left His Father’s throne above So free, so infinite His grace! Humbled Himself so great His love!, And bled for all His chosen race: ’Tis mercy all, immense and free, For O my God, it found out me! Everyone: Amazing love! How can it be, That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me? 17 4. Long my imprisoned spirit lay, Fast bound in sin and nature’s night; Thine eye diffused a quick’ning ray; I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains fell off, my heart was free, I rose, went forth, and followed Thee. Amazing love! How can it be, That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me? 5. No condemnation now I dread; Jesus, and all in Him, is mine; Alive in Him, my living Head, And clothed in righteousness divine, Bold I approach the eternal throne, And claim the crown, through Christ my own. Amazing love! How can it be, That Thou, my God, shouldst die for me? GOD SENDS US Benediction “The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all.
