Skagen will be exhibiting at Skipper Expo Int.
Aberdeen with seven companies represented plus
Serviceteam Skagen.

located in Killybegs will be promoting the various services their
shipyard can offer. Everything
from boatbuilding to their fully
stocked 2500 sq/m on site marine
chandlery store will be featured.
In terms of boatbuilding the yard
will be showcasing their latest
build, the MFV Patrick C, which
is the largest Irish built fishing
vessel commissioned in a decade
and also a second 25.5m vessel,
the MFV Audacious under construction due for delivery October
2015. Other types of craft produced include smaller fishing vessels, workboats, small passenger
ferries and landing craft.
The yard has a staff of 49 employees with skills ranging from
welder fabricator, ship wrights,
electricians, carpenters, hydraulic
engineers and our retail staff in the
marine chandlery store who can
source any parts if not available
in store.
Services include refurbishment and
repair work which is facilitated by
an onsite 75 ton boat hoist and also
a 600 ton Department of Marine
synchrolift. There is a covered
repair shed where they can offers
washing, painting, sandblasting
and metalizing services 12 months
of the year. The yard are distributors for Jotun Paints & MG Duff
anodes.
The yard has experience in vessel
lengthening, supply and installation
of engines and stern gear, wheelhouse refurbishment, winch and
hydraulic packages fish handling
systems, etc.
The yard has 3500 sq/m fabrication facility and fully equipped
machining and turning workshop
on site that specialises not only in
performing marine surveys, but in
manufacturing bespoke items such
as tail shafts, stern tubes etc made
to order.

Fishing for the Future at Skipper Expo Int. Aberdeen 2015
With the Scottish Fishermen’s
Federation (SFF) once again being
show sponsor for the forthcoming
Skipper Expo Int. Aberdeen on 29
and 30 May 2015, a key theme at
the event will be the promotion of
career opportunities for youngsters
in fishing.
Under the show theme of ‘Fishing
for the Future’, the SFF and its
partners - Aberdeenshire Council,
Scottish Maritime Academy and the
Sea Fish Industry Authority - will
be promoting a recently launched
initiative to encourage youngsters
to consider a career in commercial
fishing.
Under the initiative, school-leavers
in Aberdeenshire are being offered
the opportunity to undertake a
three week introductory and safety
course in fishing at the Scottish
Maritime Academy (SMA) in
Peterhead followed by a two-month
work placement aboard a working
fishing vessel. Participants who
decide that fishing is their career of
choice, will then have the opportunity to apply for a two year Modern
Apprenticeship course leading to a
qualified deckhand certification.
school-leavers who have expressed
a real desire to participate in this
training, will be able to get more
information on the scheme at the
SFF and Aberdeenshire Council
stands, as well as gain a good
overview of the fishing industry by
attending the event.

the fishing industry and the rewarding career opportunities available.”

Antarctic refit ‘as good as
Redesigned Console and Helmsman station

The standard and quality of workmanship in a variety of trades and
services in Killybegs is “as good
as anything anywhere in Europe”,
according to one local businessman.
John Cormack of Barry Electronics
Ltd. made the claim to “The
Skipper” following the completion of a refit on Eamon McHugh’s
“Antarctic”. The work involved a
major modernisation of the vessel’s
refrigeration system and electronics.
The contract for upgrading of
the refrigeration system on board
the “Antarctic” was won by the
Killybegs-based KER Group after
competing with other international
suppliers.
The old system was running on
R22 refrigerant which was no longer available. The new system was
designed and installed using a more
energy efficient and safer Ammonia
Spray Chilling System.
A section of the hull was cut open
to allow for the removal of the
existing equipment. In order to
install the Ammonia systems the
new RSW room must be isolated
from the other areas on board. To
do this, a new bulkhead with selfclosing door and secondary escape
hatch were fabricated and installed.
New circulating and condenser
pumps with frequency inverters
and stainless steel pipework were
installed.

controlled by a state of the art PLC
System with touchscreen interfaces.
This is located outside the RSW
room with secondary touchscreen
control points in the wheelhouse and
in the engine room control room.
The RSW room is fitted with
explosion-proof lighting as well as
with gas and fire detection systems.
New high velocity explosion-proof
fans will ventilate the room in
emergency situations and water
spray containments systems at each
access point prevent any possible
gas leakage from the RSW space.
All materials used were class
approved by DNV and certified
after installation.
Speaking to The Skipper Antarctic
owner Eamonn McHugh said “We
are extremely happy with the new
RSW installation, and the quality
of our fish is outstanding. We have
received a better price for our fish
and in turn the processor has also
received a better price. It really is a
win win situation”
“We would have no hesitation in
recommending KER Group to any
Skipper/Owner upgrading their
refrigeration system.”

As part of the major wheelhouse
overhaul Barry Electronics upgraded a lot of the original navigation
and fish finding equipment and
fitted 17 new 19” and 20.5” Neovo
Flat screen Monitors. They also
installed a Phontech 3120 Ships
Intercom system and a range of
new communications equipment
with all communication antennas
and cabling being replaced.
Working with carpenter Sean
Doherty, Barry’s team fitted a
Complete new bridge lighting
system and finally a SeaTel 4004
Satellite TV system.
Talking afterwards, John Cormack
had particular praise for quiet-spoken carpenter, Sean Doherty, who
made the wheelhouse consoles and
wooden fittings for the upgraded
and replacement electronics.
“Sean Doherty is easily as good
as any craftsman in Europe”, said
Cormack. “We have worked in
yards all over Europe and I can tell
you that you will not find better.
“The significance of that is that
vessels are travelling long distances to other countries to have
work carried out which could be
as well done or better right here in
Killybegs.”
John Cormack conceded that a
major factor in the decision of vessel owners to travel to other countries was the availability of suitable
dry-dock facilities in Ireland. But,
that being said, work was being
outsourced which could be carried
out as well or better here.

“We’re talking about millions of
euro worth of work”, he said.
For his part, Sean Doherty shrugs
off such fulsome compliments.
“It’s all in the measuring up”, he
says. “You have to measure and
survey the whole thing and make
your templates. You have to draw
everything to scale and have every
surface its true shape. The setting
out and the figuring out is as much
of it as anything.”
Sounds simple enough.
Sean learned his trade as a young
apprentice with Laverty Design
Workshop in Dunkineely. After
eleven years there, he left to set
up Sean Doherty (Killybegs) Ltd.
Doherty Joinery Ltd. was founded
in 1996.
Eamon McHugh is not a new customer. “We did the work for him
on the old ‘Antarctic’, Sean recalls.

The type of work carried out on
fishing vessels by Doherty Joinery
Ltd. is varied. “The majority
would be in the wheelhouse but,
at the same time, we do bunks
and cabins and galleys; the whole
thing”, says Sean.
The critical factor in working on
boats is getting the survey right. “If
you are doing a wheelhouse, you
have to do a big survey of the whole
thing. Then you go away and make
your templates. You have to draw
everything to scale and every surface has to be its true shape.

“The setting out and the figuring
out is as much of it as anything.
You have to get that right and get
it accurate. If you don’t get that
right, you have nowhere to go to
start with; planning would be a big
part of it.”
Other work carried out by Doherty
Joinery Ltd. includes replacement
consoles on the Irish Lights vessel, “Granuaile”. He recalls: “We
measured up and templated and
then we were only two days on
board fitting it.”
Another job involved wheelhouse
consoles and furniture for the
“Northern Celt” in Greencastle.
Others included the “Western
Endeavour”, the “Lovon” in
Baltimore and Andrew
Orr’s “Havila”.

Peter Lynch onboard Atlantic Freedom
Well known Howth fisherman
Peter Lynch has recently invested
in a purpose built inshore potter/
netter.
The Atlantic Freedom (S78), a
9.95m Cygnus Typhoon arrived
at the East Coast harbour after
Peter steamed from Cape Clear
Island off the West Coast of Cork
earlier this month and is currently
undergoing some minor maintenance before potting for whelk.
The Atlantic Freedom was built
in 2009 at North Wales by Irish
Sea Fishing Boats, Holyhead.
The vessel was built as a fast
workboat and because of its
unique design there is no
slamming when offshore in
poor weather.

The Atlantic Freedom’s overall
dimensions are, Length 9.95m,
Beam 4.1m and a draft of 1.4m,
the vessel is constructed in GRP.
The Atlantic Freedom is powered
by a Daewoo L126 engine and
gearbox supplied by Watermota,
the vessel will cruise at 12 knots
and has a top speed of 18 knots.
The single 4-blade 26-inch propeller is protected behind a full
length keel and enclosed skeg/
rudder. The Typhoons have a 4m
molded beam and the over-developed chines that were first seen
in the Cyclone giving a big stable
platform while working in poor
conditions or at speed.
The forward wheelhouse is very
spacious and the crew’s comfort
is also well attended to with two
berths forward beside the galley, there’s also a toilet aboard.
The vessel’s electronics package includes Furuno Radar and
Sounder, Sodena Plotter, GPS,
EPIRB and 2x ICOM VHF’s.
There is also a Webasto heating
system installed to help demist
the windows in the wheelhouse
to give good visibility.
The 4.1m beam on the Atlantic
Freedom gives plenty of deck
space for working and carrying
the pots ropes and nets which
were sourced from Swan Net
Gundry. On the deck, there’s a
Spencer Carter one ton line hauler and the rear gantry is designed
to compliment a net hauler with a
net flaker. A 250 kg cargo winch
is used to lift the catch from the
hold. The spacious hold can store
40 boxes of fish or shellfish.
A native of Howth , Peter come
from a large fishing family and
he began his career on his father
John Lynch’s boat, the John
Martin. After 10 tears he moved
to the family’s next vessel the
Eblana where he spent the next
ten years alongside his brothers
John and Brendan.
