It has been a little over a month since the death of my
mother. I think of her every day, as I do my father, who
must now adjust to a very different life. My mother’s death
has been a difficult experience for me and my family, but
there have been blessings as well. First of all, I give thanks
that my mother lived a long life—she was 90 when she died.
I know many people who lost their mothers at a young age,
and I cannot imagine the pain and grief of a such a loss. I
also give thanks that my father has lived so long—he is 95.
A practical consequence of long-lived parents is that you get
many years to work out the “issues.” Like all children, I
certainly had growing-up issues with my parents. But as the
decades passed, those issues began to fade away, and our
relationship went from “adolescent” to “adult.” I could
enjoy my parents, and they could enjoy me! I especially give
thanks for the final years, where more assistance was needed.
I could finally give back, to some degree, what they had
given to me. It was a large debt!
The second (and a little unexpected) blessing was that my
mother’s death brought me and my five siblings closer
together. Just as we have issues with our parents, we also
have issues with our siblings. The death of my mother
challenged us to put aside such issues, work together, and
support my father. During the final days of my mother’s life,
my siblings and I worked with Maryville and Hospice to
make sure that my mother was comfortable and had
everything she needed. She wasn’t the easiest patient (as we
knew from previous hospitalizations and rehab care), but our
level of patience with her (and with each other) was
heightened by the fact that her death was near. We found
ourselves telling stories about our growing up in Beaverton,
our first small house in Cedar Hills, our school years at St.
Cecilia, Holy Trinity, and St. Mary of the Valley (as it was
known in those days). We had many laughs about the ups
and downs of family life, and we did our best to put aside
past slights and hurts and controversies. What difference did
it make now, in light of our mother’s death? A bigger
purpose can oftentimes put lesser things in perspective. Not
a bad lesson for families.
When the end finally came, we were at peace. Hospice
was so helpful in making arrangements, and it was a healing
moment when my family got together to plan the funeral. I
was deeply moved to see so many people at the funeral
itself—the support of family and friends gave me the
strength to preside at the liturgy. In addition, your cards,
prayers, and words of consolation meant everything to me
and to my family. May my mother rest in peace, and may
God bring consolation to all who mourn.
Msgr. Patrick S. Brennan

Holy Week Collections: As per tr adition at St. Mar y’s
Cathedral the collection taken on Holy Thursday will benefit
the poor. The Good Friday collection is taken to support
Christians in the Holy Land. Many Christians depend on this
collection for their lives. The Franciscans have served in the
Holy Land for nearly 800 years. With your support they and
others are operating schools, conducting pastoral ministry,
housing and feeding the poor and maintaining parishes and
shrines. Please be generous in your giving!
SOCIAL SERVICES
Thank you to the Knights of Columbus who once again
organized a Lenten food drive for our neighbors in need and
to the parishioners who generously supported their efforts.
We recently received this note from the Elks Clinic at Casey Eye Institute. “Thank you so much for the gloves,
warm hats and gifts you gave to patients and their siblings in
December. Our family had been feeling down with the news
that my daughter’s auto-immune disease had returned. For
my kids to receive a book and paint-set was so encouraging
and lifted our spirits. We are grateful for you kindness!”
Q. Why are the vestments and liturgical colors red today?
A. Red, the color of blood is the liturgical color for
martyrdom. Today especially it reminds us of the blood
Christ shed for us. Red is also the color of fire, and so we
will see red again on Pentecost, when we commemorate the
descent of the Holy Spirit in wind and flame.
