Multi-dimensional Treatment Foster Care
Multi-dimensional Treatment Foster Care (MTFC)
As a highly skilled carer, you will provide short placements (typically 9 – 12 months) for children aged 7
to 11 years old who have challenging behaviour. This is a fantastic option for people who have
experience in the care sector and who want to work full time to make a difference. This service is
provided by Action for Children who have partnered with Bristol City Council to improve the lives of
Bristol children.

We are working with Action for Children to provide intensive foster care for some of the most vulnerable
children in the Bristol area. ‘Multi-dimensional Treatment Foster Care’ (MTFC) is a proven programme
which gives young people aged 7 to 11 the boundaries and support they need to achieve their potential.
Who will be helped?
This new programme will make a difference to the lives of children who may:
 Have experienced multiple moves in care;
 Be currently living in residential care;
 Be living at home but issues mean that the situation is breaking down.
How does MTFC work and why is it needed?
One young person will be placed with an MTFC carer for up to 12 months. The child will receive
intensive support including individual help from a therapist and other workers. At the end of the
placement, the young person moves on to long term foster carers or back home. The MTFC team
provide help and support to permanent carers to continue this work.
MTFC is proven to reduce problematic behaviour and increase positive actions such as school
attendance. By intervening at a crucial stage, carers can make a positive impact on the child’s life and
improve outcomes for the future.
