Grain Market Update ~ By Joe Carlon
Things have been quiet in the grain department
for the last couple of months. Depressed world
prices and persistent lack luster demand have led
to a two month bear trend for Chicago futures.
On the flip side of the coin we have seen PNW
basis appreciation. In the last three weeks we have seen basis numbers close to $2.00 which is a historically high basis for soft white
wheat. The main fundamental driver behind this appreciation is core
buyers like Japan and Korea still have purchases on the books that
may not be fully covered by the exporters yet. SWW sales year to
date are at 91%. This is slightly behind last year’s sales pace for the
same time period. Watch for basis to hold or continue to strengthen,
as old crop supplies continue to tighten.

Market Watch
You may have been dismayed as you watched crude prices falling
out of sight dragging refined products with it, only to see the refined
products regain some of their lost strength. There are several recent
events that have caused heating oil, diesel, and gas prices to
strengthen. Bitter cold weather in the East and North East has created not only exponential demand for heating oil but has also hampered shipping and refining. The West Coast has also had refinery
issues due to unplanned maintenance and union strikes. The end
result is a threat to supply thus higher prices.

The hot topic this Spring is the lack of
spring wheat seed. Spring seed production
was down this year. Short supply by itself
would have been manageable; however this
year producers faced adverse fall seeding
conditions creating increased demand. We
now have the perfect storm for very tight
supplies. If you have contracted for your
spring wheat seed needs you are in good
shape. Feel free to give us a call if you find
you need seed we have a waiting list and
continue to search for available supplies.
All is not lost for Spring seeding we have
other options to consider!!! We have plenty
of spring barley available!! If you are in the
market for forage we have Peas, Oats,
Trical, and Haybet.
For more information on All that is Seed
please call The Wasco Seed Plant!!!
