Green Spain

reen Spain is the gorgeous, plush area in the north of
Spain that includes Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria,
Pais Vasco, Navarra and La Rioja.
Santiago de Compostela, the capital of Galicia, is the holiest
shrine in the Christian world outside of Jersusalem and Rome.
It houses the 12th century Cathedral and tomb of the remains of
St. James the Apostle. Every year, thousands of pilgrims
journey to this charming city, famous for its white wine,
seafood and bewitching charm.
Bilbao, Spain’s fourth largest city, is a major European port
with easy access to mountains and sandy beaches. Recently,
the Guggenheim Museum opened, drawing thousands of
tourists to see its collection of modern art and the impressive
building. Bilbao can be visited as a day trip from Barcelona or
Madrid.
San Sebastian is a charming beach town that is also rich in
history and personality. This town is known for its seafood
tapas (bar snacks), cider and “Belle Epoque” character. It hosts
an international film festival every September.
Pamplona, thanks to Ernest Hemmingway, is known the world
over for its annual Feast of San Fermin where locals celebrate
with the “Running of the Bulls”. The celebration takes place in
early July and runs for a week. We can arrange for you to
witness this spectacle from the balcony of a local home.
Santander is another one of Green Spain’s beach towns. This
is a great area to relax, soak up the rays and experience a more
cosmopolitan Spanish town. It is also an ideal spot for
exploring this area, the Picos de Europa Mountains and other
major cities. Near Santander are the Altamira Caves and the
museum in Santillana del Mar. Santander is also the gateway
to the magnificent Picos de Europa.

Sitges & the Costa Brava
Sitges is an elegant coastal resort a short drive or train ride
from Barcelona. Unlike many of the newer resorts, the architecture here is very much old Europe. That means, palm trees,
outdoor cafes, plazas and a relaxing sea promenade. Sitges
makes an excellent alternative to the bustle of Barcelona.
The Costa Brava, Catalunya’s “Wild Coast,” with sandy coves
and pine covered cliffs is full of authentic character and
unspoiled villages. Nearby and slightly inland, you can marvel
at the history and pageantry of medieval villages such as Pals,
Belsalú or the walled town of Peratallada. Or visit Figueres,
Salvador Dalí’s birthplace where in a crazily converted theater
of a museum, his work is celebrated. Or visit the region’s
capital, Gerona, with its colorful, narrow streets and famous
Jewish Quarter. A visit to Figueres, the Costa Brava and the
medeval city of Girona with its unusual architecture and
interesting Jewish quarter makes an excellent full day excursion from Barcelona.

he Canary Islands, a chain of 7 islands off the coast
of Africa, offer a tropical climate year round. There
are numerous nature reserves including Teide National
Park centered around the Teide Volcano on the island of
Tenerife. The Islanda offer white sand and black sand
beaches along with the opportunity to windsurf, snorkle,
parasail, ride camels through dunes and the chance to experience many other water sports.
Known to the ancient Greeks as The Fortunate Islands, the
Canary Islands are indeed blessed. They are exuberantly green
and temperate all year-round. There are seven islands in the
archipelago: Gran Canaria,Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura,
La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro. All were similarly
formed by volcanic upheavals, creating dramatic mountains
and craters and spectacular scenery.
Vegetation is lush and varied. The indigenous dragon trees,
some of them thousands of years old with spindly upturned
leaves, is an especially exotic sight. The fertile land yields
impressive crops of continental and subtropical fruits and
vegetables. Magnificent fine sand beaches -some formed from
striking black volcanic ash- ring each island, and water sports
range from swimming and boating to surfing and deep sea
fishing.

Cruises & Sightseeing
8-Day Douro River Cruise
For many years, the River Douro
was crucial to the production of
wine as the “Rabelos” ferried
the harvest of grapes, over
dangerous rapids, to the wine
lodges in Porto. Now, of course,
things have changed. The river
has been tamed by a series of
dams and the harvest is transported by roads, leaving the
beautiful and now peaceful river
to be enjoyed by a lucky few.
Day 1 - Saturday
Board the boat at the dock in Porto
or Vila Nova da Gaia. Overnight on

Spain. Citizens of other non-EEC countries may require a visa. Please
ensure that you have proper documents. If you are recently married,

A private car or van with an English speaking driver is the ideal
way to explore Portugal or Spain. This service takes the work
out of touring. You will be driven by a courteous professional
who knows and loves the country. They can assist you with all
of the elements of your journey including planning your day,
moving your bags and choosing the right place to eat. What
luxury to travel in a late model Mercedes or custom van! Our
drivers will be the highlight of your trip. We can provide
sedans, van and motorcoaches. We are happy to provide
quotes on transfers, sightseeing, shore excursions or multi-day
excursions anywhere in Portugal or Spain.
Trains & Ferries
Trains and ferries have become a great alternative to renting a
car. Now, in both Spain and Portugal, trains are a fast, reliable
and an inexpensive way to get to the major cities you want to
visit. Train passes are available that allow a great deal of
flexibility. Keep in mind that while trains are an excellent way
to move great distances, small villages and points of inerest
“off the beaten track” may not have train service. We’ll help
you plan. The AVE is the high speed service available in Spain
between Madrid, Cordoba and Seville. Service is coming on
the Madrid - Barcelona route.
When traveling between the islands or from the mainland to
the Balearics, ferries make an interesting alternative. Ferries
are available in the Canary, Balearic and Azore Islands so that
you can extend your visit to more than one island.
Villas & Apartments
A more leisurely way to explore the country is to use a villa
or an apartment as a base. Pinto Basto has a wide range of
villas and apartments throughout both countries, most of
which have private pools, maid service and all of the comforts
of home.
We offer a wide range of accommodations all over the
peninsula. Homes and apartments can provide the perfect
place for family and friends to explore the far corners of the
country or just relax by the pool.
Most homes and villas have minimum stay requiremets and
set arrival dates. Contact us before making your air reservations call us for our villa brochure!
Payment can be made by check or credit card. We accept VISA, Master
Card, American Express and Discover. All credit card transactions
require an authorization form signed by the client. Checks received
within 15 days of departure must be certified.
Refunds
Allow 30 days upon our receiving the written cancellation for your refund to
be processed. No refunds will be made for services voluntarily not used or for
cancellations made after the trip has begun.
Revisions
Due to the communication and administrative expense involved, we are forced
to charge $25 for any changes to a booking that is under deposit.
The following penalties apply to all cancellations:
30+ days prior to departure...........................10% of the total
29-15 days prior............................................25% of the total
14-8 days prior..............................................50% of the total
7 days or less are considered no-show and 100% of the package price is
forfeited.
Air tickets are non-refundable.
All cancellations must be in writing.
