Calahorra This formal ancestral manor house begun in the 17th century is located in the lush, green landscape of the Ríos Bajos in the center of the small town of Cambados. Cambados Huesca Arcos de la Frontera Cádiz Standing on the site of an old castle and surrounded by the Guadiama River, this modern Parador stands near to the Portuguese-Algarve. An excellent choice for bird watchers. Parador de Calahorra La Rioja This Parador, located in a historic town from Roman times, is decorated in Medieval motifs based on epic and religious themes to reflect its history and the flowery, green garde and the fresh water of the nearby Ebro and Cidacos Rivers. This Parador, a former monastery declared a National Monument in 1907, is a jewel along the green banks of the River Sella with the Picos de Europa forming the backdrop. It serves as the perfect base to discover the Asturian lands, festivals and folklore. . The views from this Parador are unmatched. Carmona Seville This Parador, full of Andalucian charm and set right on the water, has a swimming pool with palm trees and subtropical vegetation. Its charm lies in the bedrooms, some of which are located in the former vaults of artillery stores. Chinchón Cazorla La Coruña This Parador, very close to the San Lorenzo beach in the Isabel La Católica Park, is a hundred-year-old mill with large windows and great views from the restaurant. Fuerteventura Canaries Cuenca This 16th century Convent of San Pablo occupies an excellent position in the Hoz del Huécar Gorge on the outskirts of the town next to the “Casas Colgadas” (Suspended Houses) Relax in the swimming pool. This Parador is a colonial building bathed by the Atlantic Ocean and set amidst palm trees and sand. In spite of the volcanic origins of the island, it maintains a stately impression with its structure and white facades. Overnight flight from USA to Spain. Day 2. Monday: Madrid Arrival at the Madrid Airport where your host will be waiting to driving you to your hotel. The balance of the day will be free for resting or exploring. Day 3. Tuesday: Madrid Buffet breakfast this morning. A full-day of sightseeing begins with the nearby ancient city of Toledo. The guided walking tour will thread its way through the narrow, cobblestone streets, visiting the magnificent Cathedral. You’ll marvel at a restored medieval synagogue and see the painter El Greco’s masterpieces. Now, of course, things have changed. The river has been tamed by a series of dams and the harvest is transported by roads, leaving the beautiful and now peaceful river to be enjoyed by a lucky few. Day 1 - Saturday Board the boat at the dock in Porto or Vila Nova da Gaia. Overnight on board. the quintas of white houses where Port Wine is produced. Arrive at Pinhão in the late afternoon for dinner and overnight. Day 2-Sunday Day 7-Friday Today will include a half-day tour of Porto with time to see the Romanesque Cathedral, Morra da Sé and other interesting buildings. Enjoy the afternoon free before returning to the boat for dinner and overnight. Cruise downstream towards Régua and dock at the Quay where you will visit the ancient town of Lamego, home of a 12th Century Cathedral, several Renaissance and Baroque churches and the former Episcopal Palace, now a museum. The most dramatic sight is that of the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, which stands at the top of a seemingly endless staircase, adorned at every turn with beautiful azulejos. The climb is made worthwhile by the spectacular view. Return to the ship to sail to Bitetos for a traditional dinner at the 12th century Alpandorada Monastery. We’ll continue to Porto later this evening where we will spend the night. Day 3-Monday During breakfast, the Alto Douro will begin cruising, crossing two dams-the Crestuma-Lever and the Carrapatelo, the highest lock in Europe. After lunch is served on board, the Alto Douro will stop in Caldas de Aregos, a village famous for the thermal spa, before arriving at Régua, capital of the Port Wine Region. Dinner will be served at a Port Wine Farm “Quinta.” Day 4-Tuesday After breakfast, travel over land to Vila Real to see the 16th century Cathedral and the gardens of Solar de Mateus. Return to the ship and sail to Barca D'Alva, crossing two more dams on the way, Valeira and Pocinho. Day 5-Wednesday Today takes you into Spain where you will sail as far as Vega de Terrón. When traveling between the islands or from the mainland to the Balearics, ferries make an interesting alternative.
