In accordance with yearly tradition, the Memorial Museum Passchendaele
organises the museum weekend in the last weekend of April. The
museum weekend is the first major event of 2015 and is part of the
commemoration program ‘Children of The Empire’. Last year, the
museum weekend focused on ‘The Old Contemptibles’ and the role
of the professional British army in the first months of the war. In 2015,
the MMP1917 will bring the story of the other nations that were part
of the Commonwealth, such as Australia, New Zealand, Canada and
South Africa.

Naar jaarlijkse gewoonte organiseert het Memorial Museum Passchendaele
1917 in het laatste weekend van april haar museumweekend. Het
museumweekend is het eerste grote evenement van 2015 dat kadert
binnen het herdenkingsprogramma ‘Children of The Empire’.
Vorig jaar lag de nadruk met ‘The Old Contemptibles’ op de rol van het
Britse beroepsleger in de eerste oorlogsmaanden. In 2015 brengt het
MMP1917 het verhaal van de andere naties die deel uitmaakten van
de Commonwealth, zoals Australië, Nieuw-Zeeland, Canada en ZuidAfrika. Onder het overkoepelende thema ‘Children of the Empire’
omvat het programma een tentoonstelling, verschillende herdenkingsplechtigheden, concerten in het kader van GoneWest en zelfs een
rugbytornooi in samenwerking met Nieuw-Zeeland.
Het absoluut hoogtepunt wordt het museumweekend met honderd
jaar Anzac Day en de opening van de nieuwe tijdelijke tentoonstelling
‘Decoding the Front’. Tal van andere evenementen waaronder de
opening van vier nieuwe wandellussen, de Flanders Scottish Memorial
Day en het Living History evenement vervolledigen het museumweekend.

Under the overarching theme of ‘Children of the Empire’, the program
includes an exhibition, several commemorative ceremonies, three
concerts themed by GoneWest and even a rugby tournament in
association with New Zealand.
The absolute highlights during the museum weekend are Anzac Day
and the opening of the new temporary exhibition ‘Decoding the Front’.
Numerous other events, including the opening of four new walking
trails, the Flanders Scottish Memorial Day and the Living History
complete the museum weekend.

Op 25 april 2015 is het exact honderd jaar geleden dat de Australische
en Nieuw-Zeelandse troepen (Australian & New Zealand Army Corps of
ANZAC’s) landden op Gallipoli waardoor ook voor hen de ‘Groote Oorlog’
begon. Beiden kwamen pas in 1917 naar Vlaanderen voor de bloedige Slag
bij Passendale. ANZAC Day herdenkt de inzet van deze troepen tijdens de
Eerste Wereldoorlog. De dag begint traditioneel met een ‘Dawn Service’ om
06.00 uur op Buttes New British Cemetery (Polygon Wood). Na de plechtigheid
wordt een ontbijt aangeboden in het OC van Zonnebeke (inschrijven via
www.inschrijvingen.zonnebeke.be, prijs ontbijt € 5). Aansluitend vindt om
09.30 uur een Australische plechtigheid plaats op Tyne Cot Cemetery.
Parking voor alle publiek op parking C van Bellewaerde (Frezenbergstraat).
Vanaf 05.00 uur (en tijdens de ganse voormiddag) brengen pendelbussen je van
daaruit naar alle locaties (steeds met halte op de parking), eigen vervoer wordt
niet toegelaten.

On the 25th of April 2015, it will be hundred years to the day that the
army of Australia and New-Zealand landed at Gallipoli, there the ‘Great
War’ started for them. They didn’t arrive in Flanders until 1917, where
they fought the bloody Battle of Passchendaele. Anzac Day commemorates all the Australian and New Zealand soldiers who fought during
the First World War. The day traditionally starts with a ‘Dawn Service’
at Buttes New British Cemetery (Polygon Wood). After the service, a
breakfast is offered in the the public center of Zonnebeke. At 9.30 a.m.
an Australian ceremony takes place at Tyne Cot Cemetery.
Public parking at parking C, Bellewaerde (Frezenbergstraat). The shuttle
bus will pick you up at the public parking and will drive you to all the locations during the whole morning. Personal vehicles will not be allowed.

CONCERTS GONEWEST ANZAC DAY: THE VEILS & DANIEL LANOIS
PREMIERE
PREMIERE
In het kader van GoneWest (cultureel herdenkingsprogramma
provincie West-Vlaanderen) staan tijdens dit weekend drie optredens
geprogrammeerd. Op 25 april kun je The Veils en Daniel Lanois aan
het werk zien en op 26 april staat Gurrumul op het programma.
Al deze artiesten hebben Australische, Nieuw-Zeelandse en Canadese
roots en maakten in opdracht van GoneWest nieuwe composities
rond Wereldoorlog I en Anzac Day. Honderd jaar na datum brengen
ze dit nieuw werk in première op het kasteeldomein van Zonnebeke.

De concertreeks start op zaterdagnamiddag 25 april met een concert
van The Veils. Deze indie/alternatieve rockband van frontman Finn
Andrews met Nieuw-Zeelandse roots heeft Londen als uitvalsbasis.
De band staat bekend om hun poëtische-romantische composities,
zeer louterende live optredens en vaak een nadrukkelijke en bezeten
aanwezigheid van Finn Andrews op het podium.
Daniel Lanois | 20.30 uur | tent kasteeldomein Zonnebeke
Later op de avond volgt er een optreden van de Canadese topartiest
Daniel Lanois. Lanois is een wereldvermaarde songwriter, muzikant
(vb. Black Dub) en producer (hij werkte onder meer voor U2,
Bob Dylan en Neil Young) met een zeer herkenbaar, broeierig en open
geluid. We verheugen ons al op een onvergetelijke compositie die
aansluit bij de WOI-thematiek. In combinatie met zijn bestaande werk
en het wel heel bijzondere decor wordt dit een onvergetelijk concert.

THE VEILS
This year, two GoneWest concerts of The Veils and Daniel Lanois
will end the centenary of ANZAC Day. GoneWest (the cultural
remembrance program of the province of West-Flanders) asked these
musical protagonists from Australia, New Zealand and Canada to draw
their inspiration from WWI and Anzac Day and bring new work to
premiere at Zonnebeke.

The concerts start on Saturday afternoon, April 25th with a concert from The Veils. This New Zealand rock band with front man
Finn Andrews has its roots in London. The band is known for their
poetic and romantic compositions, very cathartic live performances and
often an empathic presence.

Later that evening Canada’s top artist Daniel Lanois will perform.
Lanois is a world-renowned songwriter, musician (eg. Black Dub) and
producer (he worked for U2, Bob Dylan and Neil Young) with a very
recognizable voice. We all look forward to unforgettable composition
that matches this WO I thematic.

The exhibition ‘Decoding The Front’ features communication in the
First World War. The story of messengers, pigeons, dogs, telephony,
letters, telegraphy, wireless radio connection and even war propaganda
will be told. ‘Decoding The Front’ explores how soldiers found ways to
communicate both on the battlefield and to the home front. During the
museum weekend you can discover the new exhibition by free guided
tours at regular times.
In 2014, the MMP1917 opened a new cycling route, called ‘The Legacy’.
In 2015, four new walking routes will complete the Legacy project.
There is one hiking trail towards Tyne Cot Cemetery, one to Polygon
wood, another one is located around Geluveld (opening scheduled in the
autumn) and the last one is called the Canadian Remembrance Trail
near Passendale. During the museum weekend, you can discover
three of the four new walking routes by free guided tours at 1.30 p.m.
(Polygon Wood), 2.30 p.m. (Tyne Cot Cemetery) and 3.30 p.m.
(Canadian Remembrance Trail). Starting point is the tent at the chateau
grounds of Zonnebeke.

De tijdelijke tentoonstelling brengt dit jaar het verhaal van communicatie tijdens de oorlogsjaren. De expo brengt een overzicht van de
manier waarop gecommuniceerd werd tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog:
via koeriers, duiven, honden, telefonie en telegrafie tot draadloze
radioverbindingen, brieven, verkenningsvliegtuigen, enzovoort. Niet
alleen de communicatie aan het front komt aan bod, ook de briefwisseling tussen soldaten en burgers, oorlogspropaganda en berichtgeving
worden er belicht. Tijdens het museumweekend worden op geregelde
tijdstippen gidsbeurten georganiseerd om de nieuwe tentoonstelling te
ontdekken.

Na de opening van de nieuwe fietsroute ‘The Legacy’ in 2014, openen in
2015 vier nieuwe wandellussen. Twee wandellussen starten in het kasteeldomein van Zonnebeke. Eén lus gaat naar Tyne Cot Cemetery en
de andere naar Polygon Wood. De derde en vierde wandellus zijn een
wandeling rond Geluveld (deze opent pas in het najaar) en de Canadian
Remembrance Trail nabij Passendale. Tijdens het museumweekend kan
je drie van deze wandellussen leren kennen via gratis gidsbeurten om
13.30 uur (Polygon Wood), 14.30 uur (Tyne Cot Cemetery) en 15.30
uur (Canadese wandeling). Steeds verzamelen in de tent op het kasteeldomein van Zonnebeke.
Unique historical event at the chateau grounds of Zonnebeke with
more than 200 WWI figurants from both home and abroad. The
reenactors aim to keep the memories of World War One alive for future
generations. They remember the contributions WWI soldiers made
during the First World War. Historic weapons and artefacts, original
objects and demonstrations try to give an impression of the daily life
experienced by soldiers in World War I.

Naar jaarlijkse gewoonte brengen meer dan 200 historische figuranten
uit binnen- en buitenland een weekend door op het kasteeldomein van
Zonnebeke. Ze tonen je op een toegankelijke manier hoe de soldaten
achter het front leefden. Naast kampementen, wapens en historische
voorwerpen zijn er ook demonstraties te zien. Dit jaar zijn die demonstraties in het thema van de tentoonstelling die ook dat weekend wordt
geopend: communicatie tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog.

zoektocht die je vanaf nu kan doen in het kasteelpark van Zonnebeke.
Kom kennis maken met o.a. de baron, een wildeman, de vleermuis, en
2 doodsbange soldaten. Weten zij hoe de steen in het kasteel terecht
kwam? Voor gezinnen met kinderen van 5 tot 10 jaar. Aanmelden aan het

Op zondag wordt het verhaal verteld van de vele Schotse soldaten in het Canadese leger die
honderd jaar terug hun vuurdoop kenden op Vlaamse bodem. Op zondag 26 april kom je via
een historische rondrit (start om 09.00 uur) meer te weten over de geschiedenis van de 48th
Highlanders en de 85th Nova Scotia Highlanders (CAN). Samen met de gids bezoek je de
belangrijke slagvelden in de regio waar de 48th (Schotten) en 85th (Canadezen) Highlanders
strijd leverden tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog.

via a historical tour (start 9 a.m.). A guide takes you on a historical tour to the most important
battlefields where the 48th Highlanders and the 85th Nova Scotia Highlanders (CAN) fought
during the First World War.

Op zondag 26 april staat Australië centraal met Gurrumul. Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu is
een enigma binnen de Australische muziekindustrie. Als blinde muzikant, geboren binnen
de Aboriginal Gumatj-clan, genereerde hij internationale aandacht na de release van zijn
debuut ‘Gurrumul’ (2008). Met zijn fragiele en sterk emotionele stem zingt hij over identiteit, zijn connectie met zijn land en zijn voorouders.
