Charter Member Gulf Yachting Association Mobile Yacht Club May 2015 INSIDE THIS ISSUE Commodore’s Report Vice Commodore’s Report - Notice of Race MBSS note Memorial Day BBQ Bay Gales News from the Kitchen Manager’s Notes Commodore Steve Zito Vice Commodore Brad Broadus Rear Commodore Mike LaSarge Treasurer Hank Schwarz Corresponding Secretary Bill Haffner Recording Secretary Randy Wendt Board Members John Ballard Eugene LeVert Josh Murray Ellis Ollinger Greg Reed Mike Reid Established 1847 Mobile, AL Commodore’s Report It is Sunday afternoon after the Dauphin Island Race as I write this month’s Commodore’s Report with a heavy heart. We are all listening for the newest, official reports and are talking to each other to try to determine the latest news on the tragic events of yesterday afternoon. By the time you read this, I am sure the final results of survivors and the loss of life will have been determined. The Coast Guard just called me to confirm all those on my boat were safe and sound. By Sunday afternoon, two deaths have been confirmed, but names not officially released. At this moment, we are still hopeful for more survivors and will continue to pray for that outcome. For those who have lost loved ones, our prayers are with you and your families as you and our sailing community cope with the losses. There are so many stories of rescues and assistance rendered by sailors to other sailors that remind us of the bond we all have. The love of the water and sailing, and the camaraderie amongst our local sailors, is shown in the efforts of the many who participated in rescues and provided aid to other boaters. There will be much more appreciation and recognition for those efforts once this tragedy is behind us. Special thanks to the Coast Guard, Marine Police and other governmental marine authorities who are still searching while I write this. We will also make the plans to move ahead to a safer boating life and reduce the possibility of this outcome in the future. In other news, our Manager for the past year is leaving for a new opportunity. We appreciate her time with us and filling our needs while she was here. We have plenty of qualified staff to keep us going as we begin again the search for a new Manager. To end on a better note, we are excited to announce we will again be open for a Bar B Que and Club party on Memorial Day. A huge turnout last year and positive feedback makes us want to do it again. We look forward to you including your Club in your holiday plans. See you soon at the Club and on the water, Steve Zito, Commodore Official Web Site: www.mobileyachtclub.org Page 2 Vice Commodore’s Report The Great Circle Race is scheduled for this Saturday, and is also a voluntary fundraiser for the Boys and Girls Club.
