Principles for the Provision of Opioid Dependence
Treatment by Manitoba Pharmacists Certificate
Program
Pharmacists must be knowledgeable in all pertinent aspects of
methadone and buprenorphine/naloxone use when involved in care
with methadone in order to ensure patient care and safety. Section
18 of the Pharmaceutical Regulation states that a member may only
engage in the aspects of pharmacy practice that he or she has the
requisite knowledge, skill and judgment to provide or perform and
that are appropriate to his or her area of practice.
At least one pharmacist at each pharmacy providing methadone
must have completed specialized training in harm reduction and the
use of methadone and is responsible for training all pharmacists who
will be dispensing methadone at that pharmacy.
The College is offering the one day, updated Principles for the
Provision of Opioid Dependence Treatment by Manitoba Pharmacists
Workshop on June 7, 2015 as part of the Principles for the Provision
of Opioid Dependence Treatment by Manitoba Pharmacists
Certificate Program. As part of the certificate program pharmacists
must:
Read the Principles for the Provision of Opioid Dependence
Treatment by Manitoba Pharmacists Guidelines
Watch (or have previously attended) the University of
Manitoba, Office of Continuing Professional Development
“Methadone – An Introduction to Clinical Practice” (Available
on DVD from the College office.)
Attend the full day, live workshop on June 7, 2015.

Patient counselling log
Pharmacists are reminded the practice direction “Patient Counselling
” came into effect October 10, 2014. This practice direction clearly
indicates the need for pharmacists to record in their patient
counselling log every time when a patient refuses to participate in
patient counselling. Patient counselling must be performed by
licensed pharmacists, academic registrants, interns, pharmacy
students (under the direct supervision of a licensed pharmacist) and
not by other pharmacy support staff. The College encourages
pharmacists to review the practice direction to ensure their
pharmacy is in compliance.
Take the time to complete professional development
activities this summer!

Injections update: Safety-engineered needles and
Administration of Drugs including Vaccines Policy and
Procedure Manual Template
In accordance with the Workplace Safety and Health Amendment Act
, when administering injections to patients using hollow-bore
needles, pharmacists must use safety-engineered needles. This is
extremely important in preventing needle stick injuries. Post
exposure to a patient’s blood via a needle stick injury is a serious
health concern for pharmacists providing injections. There are rare
cases where the use of safety-engineered needles may not be
reasonably practicable (such as when administering manufacturer
pre-filled syringes).
Pharmacies that administer injections must have a policy and
procedure manual that includes information on the administration of
drugs, including vaccines, and emergency response protocols. The
College has created an Administration of Drugs including Vaccines
Policy and Procedure Manual Content Template document. Pharmacy
managers should use this when developing their own manual. This
resource document also has a section on needle stick injury protocol.
It is required that pharmacy managers ensure all employees at risk
of injury are educated in needle stick prevention and the protocol to
follow, should an injury occur. To offer pharmacies further guidance
on needle stick injury protocols, the College is developing a Needle
Stick Injury Guidelines document that should be posted within the
