Memorial Day Salute to the Generals
Memorial Day Salute to the Generals May 25, 2015 Thank you for your patronage of Muscarelli Auction Company. We are honored to present these fine collections and family archives at auction. In this Memorial Day Salute to the Generals sale, we pay homage to the individuals represented in this sale, and to all Americans, who have served at home and abroad to preserve our freedoms and hold us true to the founding principles of our nation. This sale features historically important items from the collections of the deceased estates of Joseph C. Price of Salisbury, North Carolina and Charles Andrews III of Statesville, North Carolina as well as the civil war letters of Captain A. Hill of Taylorsville, North Carolina and military antiques from the Shelf family of South Carolina. The estate of Charles Lee Andrews III, direct descendant of Major General Edwin V. Sumner and Confederate Lt. Col. Richard Snowden Andrews, offers this extensive collection documenting five generations of his family’s contribution to American military history. Included in this family line and collection are other military notables including Confederate General Armistead Lindsay Long, Major General Edward King, and Admiral Charles Andrews, Jr. (A family chart, illustrating these relationships is printed on the back cover.) Books, documents, manuscripts, weapons, and photographs trace this family through the formation of western forts in the 1850’s, the MexicanAmerican War, the American Civil War, the Spanish-American War, the two World Wars, and other engagements in American history. Included in this collection are three unpublished manuscripts by Confederate General Lindsay Long, confidant of Robert E. Lee and author of the 1886 publication, Memoirs of Robert E. Lee; personal and military photographs and letters; photographs captured by the renowned Civil War photographer, Matthew Brady; military awards and certificates of commissions; documentation of the first American capture of a Nazi flag in WW II, removed by John Steinbeck off a sinking German sub; and original autographs of numerous generals and governmental officials including Teddy Roosevelt, Grover Cleveland, Dwight Eisenhower, Douglas MacArthur and many others. The estate of Reverend Joseph C. Price, African-American orator and educator, and founder of Livingstone College of Salisbury, North Carolina offers photographs and documentation of his brief life but impactful contribution to education and civil rights in America. Included within this collection is an original carte de visite of his friend and colleague, Frederick Douglass. Additional detailed historical and biographical notations are included throughout the catalog. Muscarelli Auction Company is a full service auction firm. We welcome high quality consignments for auctions in our gallery and conduct on-location estate and liquidation sales throughout the region.
