Chords for Raga Chakravakam Phrases
Phrase: Pa dha ni dha
Intervals of the notes with respect to the root: 5 – M6 – m7 – M6
Along with the root and the major 3rd interval present in the Chakravakam scale, the 5th and m7
notes in the phrase gives a dominant 7th chord.
The major 6th note along with root, Major 3rd and 5th gives the Major 6th chord.
Root – M3 – 5 – m7 : dominant seventh chord
Root – M3 – 5 – M6 : major 6th chord
The dominant 7th chord can be used for more tension in the chord progression and to move to the
next chord, especially the chord based on the note Ma (F major chord in the case of C chakravakam.
C7 resolves to F major chord), since that is a perfect cadence (V7 to I motion: C7 to F)
Phrase: ma sa ri sa
For example, when the root is C:
ma = F, Sa = C, ri = C#.
C# - F - G# gives us the C# major chord. Add C to it to get the C# major 7th chord which includes all
the note in the phrase, and an additional G# note which is not present in the Chakravakam scale.
C# - F – A# gives us the A# minor chord, which is an option too, though it does not include the C
note. This A#m chord may emphasize the C# (ri) better than the C#M7 chord.
Phrase: |ma ma Pa - |ni Dha ni Dha Pa ma |
For example if C is the sa, ‘Ma ma pa’ staying on the note Pa (G note) for long, can use the chord Gm.
G minor chord has the notes ‘G Bb D’. G and Bb are part of the C chakravakam scale.
The phrase ‘Ni dha ni’ with importance to the note ni (note Bb) can use the dominant 7th chord.
When C is the root, the notes ‘C E G Bb’ gives us the C7th chord which emphasizes he Bb note, which
is ‘ni’ with respect to C as Sa.
‘Pa ma’, staying on ‘ma’ can use F major chord when C is the sa. ‘F A C’ are the notes of the F major
chord, all of which are present in C chakravakam scale.
Phrase: |Pa sa ni sa | dha ni pa | dha |
The phrase ‘Pa sa ni sa’ has the ‘root – 5th – minor 7th’ intervals. The chakravakam scale has the
Major 3rd note, which when added to the notes of the phrase gives us ‘root – major 3rd - 5th – minor
7th’ which are the notes of the dominant seventh chord.
For example when C is the root (Sa is C), Sa – pa – ni are the notes C – G – Bb. Along with the major
3rd note (E) the notes C – E – G – Bb which are the notes of the C7.
When C is the root, ‘dha – ni – pa’ are the notes ‘Bb – A – G’ . Bb and G along with the note D forms
the chord G minor. D is not a note present in the C chakravakam scale, but it can be used since the
chord sounds fine with the phrase, and since the chord has two notes in the phrase and within the
chakravakam scale.
Dha will be the note A when the root is C. A note can have the chords F (FAC notes) Am(A C E notes)
for example.
