The RoHS (pronounced “Rose”) Directive stands for "the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment". This Directive bans the placing on the European (EU) market of new electrical and electronic equipment containing more than agreed levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants. Manufacturers need to understand the requirements of the RoHS Directive to ensure that their products, and their components, comply. Going forward, Oki has implemented changes to accommodate the EU laws. These changes affect the parts in all printers and fax machines. 2. Identifying a RoHS compliant unit The RoHS compliant ES3640MFP units will have the same product name as the original version as well as the same part number. The only way to distinguish between the two units is to perform a visual inspection. 2.1 Serial Number A RoHS vs. Non-RoHS unit can be identified by the alpha character in the S/N: Non-RoHS RoHS - AExxxxxxxxA0 AExxxxxxxxB0 2.2 Network Interface The Network Interface is now “on board’ the CU Board. On the Non-RoHS units the Network Interface was a daughter board (socketed) and could be removed. On the new RoHS units the Network Interface is soldered and is no longer removable. 3 Oki Confidential 2.3 Network Interface Location The image shown below is of the current Non-RoHS ES3640 CU board “Aspen”, note the location of the Network interface is towards the top of the board. Non-RoHS Compliant Board The image below shows a RoHS compliant unit “Aspen-2”, note the location of the Network interface is now towards the middle of the board right next to the thumbscrew of the “BYN” (MFP) Board. RoHS Compliant Board Also it can be seen that the RoHS Board has 3 sets of vent grilles above the Network interface, where the Non-RoHS only has one above. 4 Oki Confidential Hardware Differences 3.1 Part Changes − − − − − − − − CU Board RAM DIMM’s CU Board Fans Network Interface Board CU Rear Cover Plate Scanner MFP Board HDD (40GB Un-Clipped) What is a “Clipped HDD”? In the original Non-RoHS ES3640’s the maximum storage area available to the Fiery System was 20GB. When Oki Data was no longer able to source 20GB HDD’s, we switched to a 40GB HDD but “clipped” it so that only 20GB was available for use. With the new F/W required for the RoHS units, all 40GB of storage space is now available for use by the Fiery System Software. 3.2 New Part Numbers Part Description Non-RoHS RoHS CU Board 42807602 43261801 RAM DIMM (256) 42314838 43363313 RAM DIMM (512) 42314839 43363314 CU Boards Fans 42925201 43364601 CU Rear Cover Plate 42781101 43456102 Scanner 42960901 43590401 MFP Board 42887501 TBD HDD Std 55091002 TBD HDD GA 55091102 TBD Key Chip Std 42968801 42968803 Key Chip GA 42968801 42968802 5 Oki Confidential 3.3. FAQ Section If an HDD in a Non-RoHS printer is replaced with a RoHS HDD what will happen? The message “Checking system please wait 5 minutes” will be displayed followed by “Communication error” and the system will not boot. If an HDD in a RoHS printer is replaced with a Non-RoHS HDD what will happen? The message “Checking system please wait 5 minutes” will be displayed followed by “Communication error” and the system will not boot. Is all 40GB of hard drive space now available to the RoHS unit? Yes, the HDD is no longer being clipped as it was in Non-RoHS units which means that all 40GB of space is available to the system. (Note: some space will be utilized by the system software just as the Non-RoHS units) If a GA HDD (RoHS) is replaced with a Std HDD (RoHS) what will happen? If the new HDD image detects a GA activated Key Chip on the CU Board, it will become a GA HDD. The boot sequence will take slightly longer during the conversion process. If a STD HDD (RoHS) is replaced with a GA HDD (RoHS) what will happen? The error message “Communication Error” will appear and the system will not fully boot. It is necessary to replace a Std HDD with another Std HDD, it cannot be replaced with a GA HDD. 8
