Job Description: This position has a class option of Parks. It's a Full-Time,Unlimited position at
Gooseberry Falls State Park, near Two Harbors, Minnesota, also serving Split
Rock Lighthouse and other nearby Parks & Trails units. Hours & days of work
will vary by park need; will include evenings/weekends/holidays.
This Lead Park Naturalist position exists to: implement/publicize/continue
development of year-round interpretive/informational/educational services;
enhance the public's awareness/appreciation/understanding of natural, cultural,
and recreational resources and their management, to change visitor attitudes and
behaviors in order to foster resource stewardship; inform the public about the
DNR programs and current environmental issues; provide outreach/partnership
opportunities to local communities/organizations.
It is responsible for identifying/interpreting the natural, scientific, cultural,
historical and recreational aspects of the ecological subsection, watershed and
area. It will develop non-personal interpretive displays and materials,
environmental education curriculum and opportunities in partnership with
schools. It requires the use of a variety of interpretive methods and techniques
including roving interpretation, talks, walks and recreational activities. It will
lead the interpretive services, program and staff.

Responsibilities include:
-Review/Update/Develop interpretive themes, objectives, content and
procedures.
-Develop, schedule and present activities to a variety of audiences using a
variety of interpretive methods and techniques.
-Research/produce/maintain/evaluate non-personal (self-guided) interpretive
materials, especially using emerging technology.
-Provide recreational programming.
-Administer program so interpretive services are provided and documented.
-Assist with park resource management activities.
-Operate and schedule maintenance on all interpretive facilities/equipment.
-Contribute to local environmental educational efforts by offering teacher
education workshops and programs for schools.
-Serve as technical resource for local media, community, Parks & Trails unit
visitors and staff by providing information about area resources.
-Communicate effectively, discuss and exchange information on park
operations, interpretive services and resource management issues with
management teams.
-Recommend/administer interpretive services budget, purchase goods, prepare
specifications and secure bids.
-Participate in the development of park unit interpretive & management plans.
-Serve as the lead worker for the park's interpretive services staff/volunteers.
-Publicize, promote and evaluate interpretive activities and special resources.
-Train, schedule, mentor and evaluate interns and volunteers.
-Cooperate with other park staff, enforcing rules and providing emergency
response.
Minimum Qualifications: To be considered, applicants must meet the following requirements:
1) A Bachelor's degree in one of the physical sciences such as ecology, zoology,
botany, geology, OR a cultural resource-focused degree such as American
history, anthropology, archeology, OR parks and recreation management OR a
degree in Environmental Education or Interpretation OR the equivalent, AND
2) One year of recent (within the last 5 years) professional interpretive naturalist
experience (full-time equivalent) with primary responsibility for developing and
conducting natural and/or cultural resource interpretive programs and services.
3) Experience developing non-personal (self-guided) interpretive materials.
Additional Requirements include the following:
-Advanced oral communication skills sufficient to successfully present
interpretive programs/activities on environmental and cultural values, facts and
theories, in a clear and understandable manner to diverse individuals and groups.
-Writing/grammar/spelling skills sufficient to develop materials, compile reports
and write interesting and educational newspaper articles, publications and
information for use in electronic media.
-Advanced human relations skills sufficient to create and maintain positive,
professional work relationships with staff and positive experiences for park
visitors.
-Experience in public speaking and interpersonal communication in an
interpretative or environmental educational setting.
-Understanding of interpretive techniques including the ability to assess
audiences and the effectiveness of interpretive media.
-Skills in historical, cultural and natural resource research and literature search
techniques.
Requires occasionally lifting articles such as 50-pound bags of feed maximum
and frequently lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes.
This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain
or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or

leg controls.
Requires a Class D Driver's License: a single unit vehicle with a gross vehicle
weight of less than 26,000 pounds. This is a basic driver's license. Operators
may also tow vehicles/trailers as long as the gross combination weight does not
exceed 26,000 pounds.
Preferred Qualifications: -One full calendar year (all four seasons) of recent (within the last 5 years) fulltime equivalent, professional park naturalist experience.
-Knowledge of parks and trails unit operations, rules, policies and facilities.
-Experience conducting interpretive programs in Minnesota State Park.
-One full year of interpretive/park naturalist experience providing lead work
direction or supervision for/of interpretive staff or volunteers.
-Experience in creating non-personal interpretative materials using digital
technology.
-Skill and experience in developing interpretive exhibits and displays.
-Experience developing and leading recreation-based interpretive programming.
-Familiarity with Minnesota's natural & cultural resource heritage and stories.
-Understanding of resource management goals and practices.
-Organization skills sufficient to effectively manage multiple job duties.
-Ability to recruit and retain participants (including school groups and
volunteers) and organize their activities.
-Understanding of educational curriculum and materials in order to develop
activities for K-12 students, assess the effectiveness of these activities and train
others to use the park for education.
-Illustration and/or photography skills.
-Well-developed problem-solving skills.
-Supervisory or leadership/lead work experience.
-Computer software skills (MS Office, database management, GIS, desktop
publishing, Adobe InDesign, ArcMap, +other electronic media development
tools.)
-Knowledge of GIS/GPS technology and data.
