The NAO 2015 Business Summit workshops are designed to provide participants with
essential hands-on tools and skills to directly sustain and grow their centers or program
offices, thereby building program delivery capacity. The Summit workshops have been
selected by the organizing committee based on their vital role in creating sustainable
organizational growth. Each session will be presented in a workshop format using participantcentered existing/emerging applications, and providing specific tools as useful resources.

1. Tools and Techniques for Effectively Managing Significant Loss of Grant
Funding
Presenters: Marilyn Mesh, M.Ed, M.Ac., Suwannee River AHEC, Executive Director;
Mary Craig, MSHC, President, Erie Niagara Area Health Education Center, Inc.
This session provides information, tools and instruction useful for preparing an AHEC
center for possible loss of funding, with emphasis on bridging from a singular funding
model to a diversity of funding sources leveraged for sustainability and growth.
Participants will be able to:
1. Assess and build staff strategically
2. Develop Boards of Directors strategically
3. Build sustainability strategically
Participants will receive:
1. SWOT Analysis templates designs specifically for each of the three learning
objectives

This session will provide an overview of existing NAO national-scale projects and will
provide tools and resources for identifying potential national-scale AHEC/NAO
projects and a process by which potential projects & opportunities might be pursued
Participants will be able to:
1. Identify the five specific criteria required for creating/transitioning to fee-based
business to business arrangements.
2. Employ the strategic partner template to craft specific business to business
arrangements that provide financial margin.
Participants will:
1. Understand past and existing national-scale NAO projects
2. Understand the notion and value of thinking of the NAO/AHEC network as a
national force for improving health in communities across the country
3. Identify specific steps to assess potential initiatives via the NAO/national
network
Participants will receive:
1. Broad-based resources & information for exploring national-scale funding
opportunities
2. A process by which potential opportunities may be pursued & evaluated

“Re-thinking Sustainability . . . a New Vision and Program Model for Nevada’s AHEC
System.”
A story of linked missions, and the launch of Desert Meadows AHEC, a Service of Las Vegas
PBS where common goals align and how this partnership can be replicated for success and
lead to program revenues and sustainable income for operations.

This session will initiate social enterprise planning, and will provide tools and
resources for identifying, vetting and launching social enterprise ventures in an AHEC
setting.

1. Identify and select various social enterprise opportunities for their organization
2. Initiate vetting of the selected venture using specific criteria.

This session provides specific instructions, templates, and best practice examples of
bookkeeping, financial management of multiple contracts, and revenue-generating
models for AHECs.
Participants will be able to:
1. Demonstrate basic budgeting and accounting for AHECs
2. Manage multiple grants and contracts
3. Set-up and manage Social Enterprise (venture-based) budgeting,
accounting and reporting

The 2015 NAO Business Summit Networking Reception is a relaxed, intimate time for AHEC
professionals to engage with each other both socially and with the opportunity to share and

colleagues who share a focus on developing their organizations and the National AHEC

The Marketplace is an exciting, interactive and engaging venue for networking and sharing of
best practices. It provides the opportunity for AHECs to sell, share, promote, and receive
feedback on their ideas and good work to/from other AHECs from around the country. If you

with your colleagues. This can include many things such as training/educational curricula,
innovative program designs, program materials/equipment, technology applications, grant
opportunities, strategic partnerships and business arrangements, organizational/board
