Detailed Schedule - The Nature Conservancy and Seeds Training

“Nature Works Hong Kong: Environmental Innovation and Leadership
Program” Calling for enrollments!
The Nature Conservancy (TNC), an international environmental non-profit organization
founded in 1951, has been working to protect the lands and waters on which all life depends.
Launching for the first time in Hong Kong and open to all students, “Nature Works Hong Kong”
will help Hong Kong build the next generation of environmental leaders and equip them with
the skills to implement and execute environmental and conservation ideas.
Secondary school students in Hong Kong studying form 3 and above, who are passionate
about the environment and dedicated to making a difference in their schools and
communities are encouraged to take part. Upon completion of the program, participating
students will receive a certificate of acknowledgement for their hard work and contribution of
project ideas. It would be a great platform for the “Other Learning Experiences” (OLE), liberal
arts studies and even English language practice since the core training and presentation are all
conducted in English (Cantonese translation support is provided on-site).
As a participating student, you will earn the following benefits:
1. Receive training on leadership skills that are needed for successful implementation of
project ideas, which include presentation, communication, collaboration, goal-setting,
project management, dealing with adversity and leadership development.
2. Translate your passion for environmental issues into real-world conservation projects in
your school or communities, with the support and guidance of volunteer advisors from
corporations across Hong Kong.
3. Being inspired and be prepared for meeting challenges in your next stage in life; whether
studying in university or going into the work force.
The program will be conducted in three stages:
1. 3-day camp on April 7-9, 2015: learn leadership skills and environmental concepts; form
project teams (students from different schools team up); form project ideas.
2. 12-week advisor and development phase: Right after camp which culminates to a Pitch
Day on July 4th where the students will present their idea and business plan to members
of a corporate volunteer panel.
3. Project delivery after July 4th. Students will be asked to execute on the project and will be
monitored over a 12-month period with two milestones.

Activities/Deliverables
3-Day Camp for Environmental Innovation Leaders (April 7-9)
• Three-day intensive camp focused on building participants’ skills and
capacity to succeed in their projects
• Participants will leave the camp with a project idea, a project team and
two months’ time to bring their idea to fruition.
Advisor Matching Sessions (April 11)
• Participants will be introduced to the group of volunteer advisors and
will pitch their concepts to attract one or more advisors to sign on with
their team
• Online profiles of project ideas created and promoted
Additional Training on Project Management
• 4 additional evening training workshops planned for Apr 23, May 5, 21,
28 for students seeking support from volunteer advisors
• Topics include planning, communication, project management, financial
management and more
• Regular update of program on Facebook
Youths Seeking Support
• Participating teams will also be refining their pitch to potential
supporters (their close circle of friends) who will offer them their time,
money, or other means as support, bringing an exponential effect
Project Presentation Day (July 4)
• Here participating teams will take to the stage in front of an audience
made up of educators, business executives, parents, green community
and government leaders, to present their innovative ideas and pitch for
support
• Launching project idea websites to monitor progress
• Post camp research survey of students
Community Outreach activities
• Selected teams will test their ideas in the real world scenario. On
alternate weekends, teams will take turns to pilot their project in a
public or sponsored private venue close to their home/school district.
They will also document and share their experience on social media
channels, as well as to practice impact assessment to measure their
achievements.
Project progress review to select nature works ambassadors
• The first review conducted 6 months from pitch day in Dec 2015 will be
used for evaluating the program, as well as selecting Nature Works
Ambassadors for the promotion of environmental innovation in Hong
Kong. The selected ambassadors will enjoy a complimentary trip to visit
a TNC conservation site in either April or early July 2016
• The second review in June 2016 is a follow-up to further measure the
impact generated by the students.

The Nature Works program was first launched in the U.S. by TNC in 2012 to help middle
school students learn about the root causes of environmental issues and how they can take
action to address them. It consists of video content, online curriculum for high school teachers,
and interactive community projects that are rolled out to participating schools across US. The
U.S. program has reached over 500,000 students, and 7,500+ lesson plans downloaded in just
