NAWCC Chapter 154 News
Many Chapter 154 members attended the 2015
NAWCC Florida Regional event in Kissimmee, Florida
(March 14-15, 2015). It was nice to see members at
other NAWCC events outside of our chapter events.
As you know, our Chapter 154 is the host for the 2016
NAWCC Florida Mid-Winter Regional. The dates for
the event are February 12-14, 2016. The event will be
held in the Lakeland Center in Lakeland, Florida.
Several chapter 154 members have already
volunteered as chairmen: Goran Lindeolsson [Mart &
Loading and Unloading], Jim Ziesler [Co-Chairmen],
Viviane Lindeolsson [Pre-Registration], and Randy
Jaye [General Chairmen, Publicity and Web
Administrator]. The Co-Host Chapter is 176 (Big Bend
Timekeepers in Tallahassee, Florida.)
We are still going to need part-time volunteers for
security, registration, loading and hospitality, so please
think about helping to make the event a success! If
interested just contact any of the chairmen for
additional information. Thanks in advance!
Chapter 154 Silent Auction:
A Silent Auction has become a regular event at all
Chapter 154 meetings. Bring your items to sell or
maybe you can find something to buy. A $1.00 per
item/lot is all it takes to place something in the Silent
Auction. You never know what is going to wind up on
the Silent Auction table.
Daytona Beach’s Coquina Clock Tower Update:
Chapter 154’s Vice-President Jim Ziesler is still spearheading a ‘grassroots’ effort to restore and maintain
Daytona Beach’s historic Coquina Clock Tower. A
meeting on March 6, 2015 with the Daytona Beach
Parks and Recreation officials went well as the city is
expecting additional grant money to pay for needed
restoration and maintenance.
Apple Watch to be Finally Released
on April 24, 2015
Source: http://www.cnet.com/products/apple-watch/
Back in September 2014, Apple officially unveiled its
smartwatch line, simply called Apple Watch, but omitted
some crucial details, leaving them to be answered at a
later date. Well, that date has finally arrived and now
Apple has filled in some of the blanks at its March 9,
2015 media event in San Francisco.
The Apple Watch is a new product category for Apple:
it's a smartwatch. Apple's dabbled in wearable tech
before with the older iPod Nano and its wristbands, but
Apple Watch is a completely new platform: it's made to
run its own apps, connect with iPhones, and be its own
fashion product.
A software development kit released last year has
allowed app-makers to work on launch apps for Apple
Watch, a new approach compared to most Apple
products. The original iPhone didn't even have thirdparty apps its entire first year.
The Apple Watch is a music player like an iPod; a
fitness tracker with heart-rate measurements; a
communications device that will send and receive
messages, calls and audio recordings; and a handheld
portal to other apps, too. It also makes payments via
Apple Pay. It can also control your Apple TV and act as
a remote for connected smart-home devices.
The Apple Watch seems intent on being a synthesis of
many other smart watches, trying to knit together all of
these features into a coherent whole. In some ways, the
Apple Watch's notifications, voice-activated controls,
and swipe-to-glance features feel like a combination of
what Google's Android Wear and Samsung's Gear
smartwatches have strived for.
After two debut events, the Apple Watch is still a
mystery gadget. Can it show us that it's needed? The
short answer: it's not clear who needs it. But it may turn
out that a lot of people want it. There is a huge price
range from $349 to $17,000 so it will fit into many and
most budgets.
Upcoming Chapter 154 Meetings in 2015:

Innovation: An Alarm Clock That
Won't Take 'Snooze' For an Answer

nnovation-an-alarm-clock-that-wont-take-snooze-for-an-answer
For many of us, waking up in the morning is a daily struggle.
No matter what we say we value in this life (each person
has his or her own priorities and preferences), the real truth
is that the most precious thing a human being has while
living his earth life is TIME. Often we do not realize or
state it aloud, but somewhere on the level of
subconsciousness we all know it. Time given to us defines
how long we will stay with our families, how many good
things we will manage to do, and how much interesting
things we will see and learn. Perhaps, that is the reason for
the existence of the immense amount of wrist watches,
which seem to be the best proof of the highest value of time
for the humans.
They are available in all the possible shapes, styles, price
categories, and also technical characteristics. It is true that
the watch a man wears reflects his status and
achievements in life; it is also a fact that for a woman her
wrist watch is rather an additional piece of jewelry.
However, besides their feature to reflect the ego and
personality of the owner, the main purpose of the wrist
watches is to help us correctly organize and successfully
control our life rhythm. The significance of this purpose is
hard to overestimate…
You've tried everything: changing your alarm sound, setting
multiple alarms, placing your alarm across the room. "Just 10
more minutes," you tell yourself, as you hit the snooze button
again and again until the last possible second.
The developers of the Ramos Alarm Clock hope to force you
out of bed. Ramos is a remotely deactivated alarm clock
connected to a smartphone app and a Bluetooth beacon. The
developers recently put up their third version of the clock on
Kickstarter.
The idea behind Ramos is to prevent oversleeping by forcing
users to get up, so over time more healthful sleep habits are
formed.
Users set the alarm before bedtime through the app, and the
beacon is placed in a separate room. When the alarm goes off,
the user must bring the phone close to the beacon to stop the
alarm. Users can also choose to enter a customized code on the
phone to silence the alarm, but they still have to take the phone
to the beacon to do so. Even if you unplug Ramos, batteries
power it for hours. There's no getting around it.
The clock does have some features to make getting up a little
less annoying. In courtesy mode, the alarm will only sound for
15 seconds and gives you one minute to bring your phone to the
beacon. Users can also set up the snooze bank, which allows a
finite number of snoozes. Once the user runs out of snoozes
though, they must get up and bring their phone to the beacon.
Ramos is also part of the growing world known as the "Internet
of Things." So for example, if you have smart lights, Ramos can
tell them to turn on once the alarm sounds. And because Ramos
is connected to a smartphone, different wakeup routines can be
added as software updates improve phones.

Collectors (NAWCC) is an American non-profit
organization with about 14,000 members. The NAWCC was
founded in 1943 by members of the Horological Society of
New York and the Philadelphia Watchmakers' Guild who
wished to create a national organization. The membership is
now divided into over 175 "Chapters" which can be based
on a locality or a special interest. The vast majority of
chapters are US location based, a number are also in Canada
and Australia (which do not have national horological
collectors associations) and a handful are elsewhere. Special
interest chapters range from "Tower Clocks" to "Horological
Science".

Storm-hit Kingsand clock tower reopens after £600,000 repairs
Source: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-cornwall-31469491 | BBC - February 14, 2015
A storm-battered clock tower has reopened following a £600,000 restoration. The landmark building in Kingsand, Cornwall,
was damaged when waves destroyed some of its foundations last winter. The hole created by the storms was large enough for a
bus to fit inside, said Clive Davies, chairman of Maker with Rame Parish Council. The Grade II listed building opened to
villagers earlier. After the storms, engineers said it was extremely close to being demolished, with supports having to be put in
place to keep the building upright. Mr. Davies said: "It was certainly 50/50 whether we could save it." He said the £600,000
had come from fundraising, the insurance company and central government. A sea defense has also been built to protect the
tower from future storms. Mr. Davies said: "The opening will allow villagers and visitors to see what has happened." An
official opening will be held later in the year.
