A week after his demise, a letter (not) written by him has triggered a fresh furore in literary circles. The latest issue of Kumudam carried a letter, which it claimed as the last communication from Jayakanthan. The letter had rich encomiums on lyricist Vairamuthu’s short stories, which are being published by the weekly. Hours after the magazine hit the stalls, Jayakanthan’s daughter Deepa Lakshmi came out with a post on her Facebook page, stating that the letter was not at all penned by her father. ‘It would be unfair for anyone who loved his writings to make such a claim. Those visited him in his last days would know that he was not in a position to speak or write for many months. I am recording my thoughts here, as silence on such a matter would be a crime,’ she said. Giving more details on the health condition of Jayakanthan during his last months, she said, ‘when someone called on him, he would hold their hands affectionately, but he was not in a position to express any opinion or argue.’ Following this revelation by Deepa Lakshmi, literarians and social media ‘activists’ are up in arms against the lyricist Jayakanthan and the magainze, demanding at least a regret from them. However, Vairamuthu asserted that the letter was sent to him by Jayakanthan. When News Today contacted Deepa Lakshmi, she stuck to her stand and said she did not want to go into the issue further, as they were yet to recover from the shock of her father’s demise (8 April). Meanwhile, the truth comfortably sleeps with Jayakanthan. SC starts hearing in Bhavani Singh as SPP case GO FOR GOLD NT Bureau Chennai, Apr 21: The Supreme Court today started hearing a plea against the appointment of Bhavani Singh as the special public prosecutor in the appeals filed by AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa and three others in the Rs 66 crore disproportionate assets case. A bench of Justices Dipak Misra, R K Agrawal and Prafulla C Pant started hearing the matter from today and it is expected to give its verdict before 12 May so that the Karnataka High Court could decide one way or the other on giving verdict in the appeals. On 15 April, a bench of Justices Madan B Lokur and R Banumathi gave a split verdict on the validity of the appointment of Bhavani Singh as the special public prosecutor to represent the prosecution in the appeals filed by Jayalalithaa and three others-Sasikala, Ialvarasi and Sudhakaran--in the Karnataka High Court. Boy goes missing in Thiruvottriyur NT Bureau Chennai, Apr 21: A 15-year-old boy is reportedly missing since last evening from Thangal in Thiruvottriyur area. According to police, Karthik Raja, son of Thangaraj and a resident of Sathananthapuram in Thangal, who had gone for tuition last evening did not return home. Thangaraj filed a complaint with Thiruvottriyur police. Shining bright elhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said it would not be bad if his government fulfilled about half the promises made before the polls, in five years. Addressing a gathering on the eve of ‘Civil Services Day’, he also said that his government is trying try to evolve a transparent system of rewards and punishment in order to fix responsibility and create competition among officials to improve their efficiency. I have a great experience with bureaucrats in the last two months...I today confidently say that when the government was formed, there was nervousness whether they would be able to do or how much they would be able to do or not’. Meanwhile, The continued weakness in gold prices is likely to push up jewellery sales on Akshaya Tritiya day Tuesday. Akshya Tritiya is considered an auspicious day for buying gold, silver and other metals. Sales are expected to rise as there is a “positive” buying sentiment this year with gold prices ruling stable at around 26,000 per 10 grams. It is also expected that Gold Monetisation policy announced by the Finance Minister in the Union Budget may also prompt buyers to purchase gold today and later monetise it with banks. About 2-3 weeks ago, he said the sales were in slow lane due to the financial year ending. Last year, jewellery sales remained low on the day of Akshya Tritiya due to high gold prices of about Rs 30,000 per ten grams, restricting buyers. Brahmins attacked, poonool cut in city q BJP, Hindu outfits condemn attack q Four persons held NT Bureau Chennai, Apr 21: Less than a week after Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) led by K Veeramani organised the controversial Thaali removal programme, four Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam volunteers were arrested today for cutting the sacred thread (Poonool) of Brahmins in Mylapore. A couple of similar cases were reported in West Mambalam and Royapettah According to sources, some elderly Brahmins and a boy were manhandled and their poonool were forcibly removed by four Dravida Viduthalai cadres in Mylapore. Later, similar reports emerged from Royapettah and West Mambalam too last night. Following a complaint to Mylapore police, the four Dravida Viduthalai cadre were held. No arrests have been made in connection with the other two reported incidents. Meanwhile, State unit president of the BJP, Tamilisai Soundararajan, in a press release, said, ‘I was shocked to hear that Dravidar Viduthalai cadres attacked a 80-year-old Brahmin priest at Madhava Perumal Kovil Street in Mylapore and cut his poonool. Also an elderly man was threatened and his poonool was cut in Sathya Narayana Kovil street in West Mambalam too. These are cowardly acts that deserve strong condemnation’. Interfering in the personal beliefs of individuals is not right, she said and added, ‘All political parties should come together and speak against such inci- dents. Those who disturb peace should be punished severely by law’. Condemning the attacks, BJP’s National secretary H Raja speaking to News Today said, ‘It is a dastardly act. DK’s philosophy and principles have failed to find favour with people today, Hence outfits of their ilk are going back to their old ways’. ‘Their much-publicised ‘thaali’ removal programme was a huge failure as only less than a dozen attended it. Now after attacking Thaali, they have turned their ire towards poonool’. ‘I am in touch with those who were attacked. Our party will not sit back and watch those anti-social elements who want to disturb and tranquility in this part of the country. Their attempt to disturb law and order in Tamilnadu cannot be tolerated’. Such acts also clearly show the failure of Periayirsms in the State, he added. Talking to News Today, founder, Hindu Makkal Katchi and Hanuman Sena, S V Sridhar, said, ‘Had the State and Central governments initiated strong action against DK cadres when Thaali removal programme was organised, they would not have resorted to such mean protests’. ‘We consider poonool sacred. It is worn not just by Brahmins, but also Aryas and Vysyas. Such protests will trigger communal clash in Tamilnadu’. ‘We want the police to not just take action against the culprits, but also ensure protection of Brahmins’, he added. ‘Kejri is the new Hitler’ q AAP has turned Khaap Panchayat, say expelled leaders The wait ended, so to say as people thronged jewellery outlets in T Nagar in large numbers on Akshaya Tritiya today. Photo: K VIJAY ANAND Akshaya Tritiya: 2,000 kg gold is the target today q Sales expected to rise 25-30% this year NT Bureau Chennai, Apr 21: Jewellery outlets in the city were flooded with customers since this morning, as they wished to pocket some grams of gold on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya. With city police and jewellery outlets making necessary arrangements to regulate the crowd, all was going well along the bustling market streets in T Nagar and Purasawalkam. Also, officials have made special arrangements like increasing the number of buses around the city, which has aided the public largely. Meanwhile, the jewellery outlets are aiming to surpass all records this year, There are 12,000 big showrooms and 10,000 small outlets across Tamilnadu, who are competing with each other to pull in customers. In 2011, 700-kg of gold was sold in Tamilnadu on Akshaya Tritiya. While 720-kg was sold on 2012, it rose to 1,100-kg in 2013 and 1,500-kg in 2014. ‘So the sales is expected to touch 2,000-kg this year’, says an analyst. The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), in a release, said that this year the jewellery trade is expecting an increase of about 25-30 per cent, in comparison to sales made last year on Akshya Tritiya. The retailers feel that compared to last year the sales have begun bright, and even the advance booking have been healthy this year. ‘The main reason for expected spur in sales is gold rate, which was Rs 2,800 last year on the occasion, while this year it is Rs 2,530’, says Madras Jewellers and Diamond Merchants’ Association president Jayantilal J Challani. New Delhi, Apr 21: Upset over their expulsion from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), its founder-leaders Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav today said that they made a huge mistake in not judging the true colours of Arvind Kejriwal. Both Yadav and Bhushan reportedly said that they were ‘badly hurt’ by last night’s decision of AAP’s national disciplinary committee, which also expelled two other rebel leaders Anand Kumar and Ajit Jha for alleged ‘antiparty activities and gross indiscipline’ besides them. ‘I am not surprised as from the past few days the matter had been moving in such direction. Though I also cannot deny the fact that I am deeply hurt by it. How would you feel if someone drags and throws you out of your own house,’ Yadav was quoted as saying by the media. Speaking to reporters today, Yadav said, ‘Today, thousands of people who joined AAP are feeling cheated. How come two persons who are a party to the dispute are judges? Does it conform to the natural spirit of justice.’ Yadav also categorically denied doing anything which would have weakened AAP. ‘I want to reiterate ‘The decision to expel us is against the principle of natural justice. Those who had made serious allegations against us are themselves under scanner for alleged misconduct’ even at this stage that we never left the party, nor have we broken it,’ Yadav said. Shanthi Bhushan lashes out at Kejriwal Lashing out at AAP chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Shanti Bhushan, father of Prashant Bhushan, today said, ‘We made a mistake in judging Arvind Kejriwal. It was a very serious mistake. He is the new Hitler.’ The senior Bhushan further said, ‘I am wondering why they have not removed me from AAP as yet.’ In another press briefing, Shanti Bhushan’s son Prashant made a scathing attack on Arvind Kejriwal and called him a dictator, who has turned AAP into a Khap Panchayat. It is said that the number of cases relating to ear-related issues have increased in recent years and Dr N Dhinakaran, head, ENT Department of a private hospital said that listening to music using earphones at 85 decibels for eight to 12 hours Borewell mishap: HC for stringent rules Chennai, Apr 21 (PTI): The Madras High Court has sought details from authorities concerned on whether any ad hoc interim compensation was granted to the parents of a boy who died after falling in an abandoned borewell recently. After ordering issue of notice to government pleader STS Moorthy, the First Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T S Sivagnanam directed him to file a counter-affidavit within four weeks and posted the matter for further hearing to 18 June. A two-and-a-half-year-old boy died after falling into the borewell in Vellore district on 12 April despite rescue efforts. Petitioner G Sivagami, an advocate, highlighted many such incidents and alleged that authorities had not followed Supreme Court guidelines to prevent mishaps with regard to borewells. He also cited another order passed by Madras High Court in this regard last August. a day can cause permanent hearing loss. He further said that loud noises including those due to heavy machines/equipment, usage of cell phones can cause hearing loss as sound travels directly to the inner ear. This also damages the stereocilia, the tiny hair that is present on the top of the inner ear. The noise causes vibration that changes the voltage in the hair cell which in turn sends chemical messages to the brain via nerves. Continuous damage to the stereocilia will lead TUESDAY 21 APRIL 2015 to hearing loss, Dhinakaran said. However, the quality of the earphones also plays a crucial role as in some when the volume is increased the frequency of the sound also goes up, which can be dangerous. That is not all, the ENT specialist said loudness is measured in decibels and if music is listened at an optimal volume then there is no need to panic. Sometimes, a patient has only temporary hearing loss while sometimes it is prolonged or even permanent. Though the ear can receive sounds from 20 to 20,000 decibel continuous exposure can cause damage. After which the patient has to be treated with audiogram and then rehabilitation therapy, he said. Dr D R Nageswaran, a senior ENT consultant, said the trend of continuous use of earphones is rampant in the city, and hence some cases are reported. That is not all, continuous use of mobile phones brings in more patients complaining of pain - inside and outside the ear. He pointed out that the maximum a person can speak is for 10 or 15 minutes not for all calls though. Dhinakaran advised patients not to use earphones that are inserted directly into the ear canals because though that can make the music sound better it involves higher risk of hearing loss. And a break of 10 to 15 minutes should be taken every hour to help the ear recover from the effect of strong sound waves. Hence, it wouldn’t be wrong to think twice before wiring up to speak over the phone or listening to one’s favourite numbers. ‘Students should have multiple skills’ 3 Stanley Hospital observes World Liver Day NT Bureau Chennai, Apr 21: Stressing the importance of liver, Department of Medical Gastroenterology at Government Stanley Hospital observed World Liver Day 2015 here on Monday. In one word: dismal. In 2005, the CPI(M) was still a force in West Bengal, and it was doing backseat driving at the Centre, exacting a price for its support to the UPA Government. For a full decade as the general secretary of the party, Karat presided over its abysmal decline in West Bengal. And in Kerala, the only other state the CPI(M) was still relevant, he allowed internal factional fights to surface openly in the public. If in the third state where the party is still in control, it is not because of Karat, but due to its popular and most austere chief minister Manik Sarkar, who has been in the saddle by dint of that image since 1998. In short, Karat’s was the most lacklustre headship of the CPI(M). He may pride himself on his ideological purity but in terms of retaining and/or widening the CPI(M) base, he was a total failure. It is in this backdrop that the switch from Karat to Sitaram Yechury at the 21st party conference in Visakhapatnam on Sunday gains importance. Yechury, a near contemporary of Karat, can be expected to be pragmatic rather than ideological. Schooled in the wily, some people would insist wheeler-dealer, Harkishan Singh Surjeet’s brand of permissive politics, Yechury has built friendships across the political spectrum. Particularly, the party will now show greater zeal in coordinating with the non-NDA parties in Parliament in order to oppose the Modi Government. There are always factors which prevail behind-the-scenes when it comes to the crunch. Indeed, if he is a true disciple of Surjeet, who was one of the longest- serving general secretaries of the CPI(M), deal-making with anyone and everyone cannot be ruled out. After all, like Surjeet, Yechury too is flexible (which is an euphemism in its widest sense). It is remarkable that a majority of the politburo, especially those loyal to Karat, were supporting Ramachandran Pillai for the party general secretary’s post. However, the larger Central Committee pressured them to come round on Yechury. The immediate challenge for the new general secretary is to arrest the erosion in the party’s support in West Bengal, the state it had ruled without interruption for 34 years. A resurgent BJP is fast replacing the Marxists as the main opposition force, at least at the popular grassroots level. Besides, after the demise of Jyoti Basu, the party lacks a charismatic leader who can stand up to the maverick, but still popular Mamata Banerjee. Even in Kerala, the only other state, where traditionally the CPI(M) has alternated in power with the Congress-led United Front, the bitter feud between Pinarayi Vijayan and V. S. Achuthanandan shows no sign of abating. Yechuri has his task cut out. Also, in these commercial times, the relevance of the Left is also moot. How many times have we looked at a road’s name and wondered about the distinguished person after whom it is named? Have we, at all? Sad state of Sana 25 die in airstrike, blasts in Yemen SANA: An airstrike apparently carried out by the Saudi-led military coalition set off a huge explosion on Monday morning in Sana, the capital of Yemen, flattening homes close to the site and shaking buildings as far away as the outskirts of the city. At least 25 people were killed, according to witnesses and medical officials. The explosion occurred around 10:30 a.m. in the Faj Attan area of the city, near a mountaintop air defense base that warplanes had been bombing for days. Residents speculated that a bomb had struck an underground munitions depot, which might have explained why the blast seemed like an earthquake at first, before erupting into a fireball seen for miles around. Sana has been bombed almost daily for more than three weeks. The city has been a stronghold of the Houthi militia since September and a primary target for the Saudi-led aerial offensive, which is meant to cripple the Houthis and restore the exiled Yemeni government to power. Broccoli to fight head & neck cancer WASHINGTON: Broccoli may soon help protect people from head and neck cancer in a promising new treatment known as ‘green chemoprevention’, scientists say. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute (UPCI) and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) CancerCenter have found that a broccoli sprout extract protects against oral cancer in mice HEALTH and proved tolerable in a small group of healthy human volunteers. The promising results will be further explored in a human clinical trial, which will recruit participants at high risk for head and neck cancer recurrence later this year, said researchers at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Annual Meeting in Philadelphia. ‘People who are cured of head and neck cancer are still at very high risk for a second cancer in their mouth or throat, and, unfortunately, these second cancers are commonly fatal,’ said lead author Julie Bauman, co-director of the UPMC Head and Neck Cancer Center of Excellence. Today Sana has been bombed almost daily for more than three weeks, damaging factories, gas stations and residential neighbourhoods A man checked a house in Sana after a bombing that killed at least 25 people. Residents who are unable or unwilling to flee Sana have been caught in the rhythms of an insistent and repetitive war: the daily circling of warplanes, the careless firing of antiaircraft shells at them and the inevitably terrifying airstrikes. But the explosion on Monday was different, dealing a new psychological blow as its shock wave knocked residents from their chairs and beds and shat- tered windows more than a mile away. Flying debris slammed into a taxi belonging to Hassan al-Raimi, who had been waiting in line at a gas station for more than a week, trying to fill up on increasingly scarce gasoline. ‘After all these days, I have no fuel, but a broken car,’ he said, blaming the ‘Saudi aggression’ for all that had befallen the city’s residents. Hundreds of people across the city were injured by the blast’s effects. Patients arrived in ambulances and trucks at the Yemen German Hospital, including one man whose legs appeared to be broken. He grimaced in pain as he was carried into the hospital by neighbors. ‘Look what you did, House of Saud,’ he said, referring to the Saudi royal family. ‘You killed my daughter!’ He burst into tears. The Saudi-led coalition has bombed military installations across Yemen, hoping to hobble the Houthis and their allies, the Yemeni security and military units that remain loyal to Ali Abdullah Saleh, Yemen’s former president, who resigned under pressure in 2012. Pulitzer awards enter 99th year NEW YORK: The Post and Courier of Charleston, SC, won the most prestigious of the Pulitzer Prizes for journalism, for a series on the high number of deaths resulting from domestic abuse in the state. The series, titled ‘Till Death Do Us Part,’ was awarded the gold medal for public service, the first Pulitzer the paper has won since 1925. The New York Times won in the international reporting category for ‘courageous front-line reporting and vivid human stories’ on the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. The Times also won the prize for investigative reporting, for a series by Eric Lipton on aggressive efforts by lobbyists and lawyers to push state attorneys general to drop investigations, change policies, negotiate favorable settlements or pressure federal regulators to benefit their clients. It shared the prize with The Wall Street Journal, which won for a project that revealed to Americans previously confidential data ‘on the motivations and practices of their health care providers.’ The Los Angeles Times won two Pulitzers. Diana Marcum won the feature writing prize for her stories from the Central Valley of California on how the state’s drought affected the lives of residents. Bloomberg News won its first Pulitzer, for explanatory journalism. It went to Zachary R Mider, for his reporting on how American corporations dodge taxes and get away with it. The Seattle Times won the breaking news award, for its account of a deadly landslide, and for its follow-up reporting. The Pulitzer Prize for fiction went to Anthony Doerr’s best-selling historical novel, ‘All the Light We Cannot See,’ which unfolds in Europe during World War II. In general nonfiction, the prize went to ‘The Sixth Extinction,’ by Elizabeth Kolbert, which explores how climate change is accelerating the mass extinction of species. The drama prize went to ‘Between Riverside and Crazy’ by Stephen Adly Guirgis. The winning series on domestic abuse by The Post and Courier, its executive editor, Mitch Pugh, said in an interview, began when reporters saw annual statistics that ranked South Carolina the No. 1 state in the country in the rate of women killed by men. The prize for breaking news photography went to the staff of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch for ‘powerful images of the despair and anger in Ferguson’ after the shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, by Darren Wilson, a white police officer, last summer. There were roughly 1,200 journalism entries, Mike Pride, the Pulitzer administrator, said while announcing the awards, which are now in their 99th year. There were also 1,400 books, 200 music compositions and 100 plays considered. Two categories, investigative reporting and feature writing, were opened to magazines this year, which prompted 60 additional entries. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the apex policy making body of the I-T Department, has recently issued a notification making the Elector’s Photo Identity Card (EPIC) and Aadhaar, issued by the Unique Identifi cation Authority of India, valid proof of ‘date of birth’ for obtaining PAN card. Till now, both these photo ID cards were only considered as valid proof for substantiating the ‘identity’ and ‘address’ of an individual and not their date of birth. ‘The new notifi cation, in simple terms, means that henceforth having only an EPIC or Aadhaar will and our deficits have declined significantly... The impact of our reforms appears to be very positive. We are opening markets, easing business activities and placing an emphasis on infrastructure spending as well as radical tax reforms’, he added. The reduction in oil prices has helped the reforms process in India and ‘a lot will depend on how the world economy will move ahead in the next year’, he added. He stressed on creating an additional mechanism to finance infrastructure in ‘our economies as well as the developing world’. On economic recovery, he said it has been relatively weak, characterised by imbalances and build-up of financial market risks. ‘Even more worrisome is the decline in potential growth in both advanced and emerging economies’, he added. 5 YouTube, Instagram can boost learning Toronto, Apr 21 (PTI): Social media can be a powerful educational device especially when a student is not doing so well to begin with, according to a new study. Researchers investigated how an after-school programme in Quebec is revolutionising learning for at-risk youth by using social media as a teaching tool, rather than a classroom annoyance. They engaged with students and educators at Maison Kekpart, a Montreal-area community centre for at-risk youth. The centre offers a unique programme known as La Releve, which provides professional work experience for young people facing academic challenges. Students ranging in age from 13 to 17 participated in an internship in multimedia production, led not by traditional teachers, but by artists who themselves are active in those areas. The goal was to help kids become more engaged in their formal schooling by giving them the tools to use social media to build the professional, civic and social competencies that will guide them through their adult life, researchers said. ‘Insurance is a misunderstood term’ The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the apex policy making body of the I-T Department, has recently issued a notification making the voters and Aadhaar, issued by the UIDIA, valid proof of ‘date of birth’ for obtaining PAN card be enough a document for any individual to obtain the PAN card. The EPIC and Aadhaar are now unique and all purpose identifiers’, a senior I-T department officer said. As part of the new notification, the government has also made a “photo identity card issued by the central government or state government or central public sector undertaking or state public sector undertaking or the central government health service scheme photo card or exservicemen contributory health scheme photo card” as the valid proofs for establishing the date of birth of an individual. ‘So, effectively now, there are a total of 12 identity documents which could be used to establish the date of birth of an individual who is applying for a PAN card as compared to the eight earlier. But for a common man, who is not in government service, only an EPIC or Aadhaar is required’, the officer explained. Afridi, who left for Dhaka with a few other players including Ahmed Shehzad to play the lone T20 international against Bangladesh, said he has no intentions of going back on his decision to retire from the ODIs. ‘My decision is final. We have to understand that the new players will take time to adjust and settle down and we have to give them proper time for this,’ Afridi told reporters before his departure. Afridi retired from ODIs after the World Cup, having appeared in 400 games. He is now focusing only on T20. He said all his efforts are now focused on building a strong team, which will be capable of winning the next World T20 Cup in India in 2016. Leggie Piyush Chawla who reached the 100-wicket milestone yesterday said he was happy to became the fourth bowler to take 100 wickets in the IPL. ‘Yes, obviously because we all know it is a prestigious tournament. Players from across the world come to play in this tournament and it is quite challenging. Reaching that landmark of 100 wickets is something I will cherish,’ he told iplt20. com. Asked if he had planned the dismissal of Shreyas Iyer and Yuvraj Singh, - who were getting in the groove, Chawla said, ‘I knew I just had to follow my basics and bowl at a good pace. I knew I couldn’t really flight (the ball) too much on this ground because there wasn’t much help from the wicket. It was a little bit on the slower side so I was using a flatter trajectory today and it helped me a lot.’ Asked if the approach of batsmen to leg-spinners in T20s had changed over time in IPL, Chawla said, ‘If you see, lot of leg-spinners have picked wickets in recent times. You know, batsmen sometimes look at a leg-spinner as a scoring option. On the other hand we leg-spinners have (used) that attacking thinking (to our advantage) as well; we know that we might go for a couple of boundaries but (at the same time) we might get wickets (due to that). As a leg-spinner I am more than happy conceding two boundaries and getting a wicket.’ I’ve improved as a batsman: Cook Grenada, Apr 21: England captain Alistair Cook is convinced he has improved as a batsman despite failing to score a Test century since 2013. The opener will attempt to reverse a run of low scores when England begin the second test against West Indies in Grenada on Tuesday, having managed only 24 runs in the drawn first test. ‘I did have a look back in early February, watched a little a bit and it has changed quite a lot,’ he told the BBC. ‘It’s evolutionary -- if you tried to go back to exactly what you did it would probably be really unnatural. ‘I’d like to think my game has improved over time, I definitely believe it has, it’s just different.’ While the heat has been on Cook, he said the criticism does not worry him and he would continue to trust his methods. ‘I have been lucky that I have had a very simple game plan on the mental side throughout my career and it definitely works,’ he said. ‘I am a resilient guy who can try and play each ball on its merits for a long period of time, that is kind of what my success has been built on so that hasn’t changed.’ Spinner James Treadwell, impressive in the first test, is a major injury worry after hurting his arm diving for a ball in Antigua. His place could go to all-rounder Moeen Ali. West Indies have dropped spinner Sulieman Benn and have added quickie Shannon Gabriel to the squad. Mixed Bag CHENNAI Bandung for a bonding q Asian, African nations seek to enhance cooperation qSushma to attend q Modi to give summit a miss NT Bureau Having recovered from her leg injury, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today embarked on a five-day visit to Indonesia to attend the 60th commemoration of the Asian African Summit (or Bandung Conference). She will also attend the 10th anniversary celebrations of the New Asian-African Strategic Partnership. Here is a look at the relationship and its significance for India, rest of Asia and Africa. Modi’s absence The conference will see participation by Heads of States from major Asian and African powers like China, Japan, South Africa, etc. Citing the Budget Session of Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed his inability to attend the commemoration. He had written to Indonesian President Joko Widodo expressing his regrets for not being able to attend the meet. He also invited Widodo to visit India and said he was looking forward to visiting Indonesia at a mutually convenient time. What’s on the table? Forerunner to NAM Started in 1955, leaders and representatives from 29 Asian and African countries, most of them newly independent, gathered in Bandung to discuss issues to promote economic and cultural cooperation and to oppose colonialism. The conference is a stepping stone for setting up the Non-Aligned Movement during cold war-era. The conference led by Indonesia’s independence hero Sukarno galvanised global stalwarts like Egypt’s Gamal Abdel Nasser and India’s Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, whose famous ‘Panchsheel’ doctrine was incorporated in 10 principles of international peace and cooperation in declaration. The movement’s latest conference will lay emphasis on promoting unity and cooperation among Asian and African nations by solving common problems prevailing in the nations like the need to reform the United Nations Security Council, combating terrorism and poverty, etc. The significance Africa and Asia have many similarities in terms of multi-culturalism, religion and ethnicities and the problems faced by them are similar. When asked what he felt about Rahul’s remarks made in Lok Sabha on Monday, Prasad said, ‘At least we are not a suitcase government.’ He did not explain what he meant by that, but it looked like a reference to various allegations of corruption made on the government during the 10 years of UPA rule. Prasad’s remarks were a part of a scathing package launched by the BJP after Rahul’s speech on the controversial ordinance on land and other agrarian issues. On Monday, the NDA government tabled the re-promulgated land ordinance in the Lok Sabha amid loud protests by the Congress and the Trinamool Congress, which also staged a walkout over the issue. Congress president Sonia Gandhi later in the day met farmers at her Hit & run case: Salman faces verdict 6 May Mumbai, Apr 21: A court trying Bollywood actor Salman Khan in the 2002 hit-and-run case has fixed 6 May as the date of pronouncement of verdict after prosecution and defence concluded their arguments Monday. While Salman’s lawyer argued that the evidence of eyewitness Ravindra Patil should not be accepted because he passed away and was not available for cross-examination, the prosecution said ample opportunity had been given to defence earlier for cross examining this witness. Patil was police bodyguard of Khan at the time of the accident and he had filed a complaint alleging the actor was in an inebriated condition when he rammed his Toyota Land Cruiser into a bakery in suburban Bandra on 28 September, 2002 killing one person and injuring four others. In a related development, sessions judge D W Deshpande, on a plea of Khan, issued contempt notices to inspector of Bandra police station for recreating the crime scene and to two city newspapers for publishing photographs of a police team recreating the same. The newspapers had published on Sunday news and photos showing a police team from Bandra police station driving in a vehicle from J W Marriott Hotel in Juhu to the accident spot to prove that it takes 30 minutes to cover this distance of around 8 km. They’ve issued 456 ordinances in 50 years, 77 ordinances in Nehruji’s period, 77 in Indiraji’s,’ he said. Meanwhile, attacking the Congress for spreading ‘disinformation’ against the government on the land bill, BJP today said the opposition’s criticism on issuing ordinances was like ‘the devil quoting scriptures’. Bringing out the past record of previous Congress regimes, the ruling party said a record number of ordinances were issued during the time and the opposition parties had no right to accuse them of ‘murder of democracy’ Congress party criticising the ordinance route is a like a devil quoting scripture — Venkaiah Naidu The BJP also armed its MPs with records of previous regimes on ordinances and asked them to ‘expose’ those criticising them before the crucial land bill is taken up for passage in Parliament. ‘Congress party criticising the Ordinance route is like a devil quoting scriptures.Their record is worse. The George Bailey-led side will be faced with a tough task when they take on Shane Watson’s men in Ahmedabad on 21 April. Coach Sanjay Bangar, while addressing the media ahead of the match, said, ‘We want to play the kind of cricket that Kings XI Punjab is capable of playing. We’re not really far away, because we’ve been doing a lot of things right. And it’s just a matter of doing the things right for a bit longer. There have been phases where we have been able to execute the plans we want to, it’s just a matter of giving the finishing touches. I’m pretty sure the team will be able to do it.’ Speaking about the challenge awaiting them, the KXIP coach said, ‘IPL in itself is a very competitive format. All the teams are pretty strong. So irrespective of which opposition, we will try and test our own abilities and our own processes, and achieve what we’ve set out to achieve. I don’t think it’s going to be any different for any other opposition.’ Kings XI Punjab themselves were in an enviable position in the previous season. While the entire team was contributing to their unparalleled success in the 2014 season, Glenn Maxwell and David Miller were key to their victories. The duo are yet to get going this season. Speaking about their form, Bangar said, ‘They are very much used to pressure. Both are great international g cricketers,, both have great international experience. They know how to handle pressure. It’s just a matter of time. You need to be patient at times, because in cricket, there are times when things won’t go your way. But it doesn’t take long for the tide to turn, and we all have confidence in their abilities.’ Anureet Samantha does a dual role There are reports that actress samantha has completed shooting for her portions in 10 Endrathukulla. The movie directed by Vijay Milton has Vikram in the lead. Remember, Vijay Milton is on a high after the success of Goli Soda. He shot a major portion of the Vikram films in Nepal.
