Official Membership Newsletter of North Georgia EMC - May 2015 Vol. 33 No. 4
Tribute to NGEMC Director E. Dean Smith Jr.
M
r. E. Dean Smith Jr., of
Dalton, passed away on
March 12. Mr. Smith
served on the board of directors
of North Georgia EMC (NGEMC)
since 1992, representing Whitfield
County. He was the board’s
secretary-treasurer since 1996.
A businessman and a leader in
a community that helped shape
the regional economy, Mr. Smith
believed in the role the electric
cooperative served in strengthening
the region, both economically and
civically. He was dedicated to the
members of NGEMC and to the
community of Dalton and Whitfield
County.
During his tenure on the
NGEMC board, the cooperative
grew by approximately 20,000
members and added 1,300 miles
of line. He was involved in the
planning and construction of 17
new substations including the
newest substation, Lake Kathy,
which was energized in northern
Whitfield County last June.
Mr. Smith was a strong
proponent of investing in
technological upgrades that
improved operational efficiencies
and strengthened system reliability.
He was also an active supporter
of the cooperative’s member
outreach programs for schools and
civic organizations across the area.
A dear friend to the NGEMC
team, Mr. Smith was a true
gentleman, a loyal ally to commerce
and industry, a kind and caring soul
and a lifelong advocate for Dalton
and Whitfield County. He will be
deeply missed.
