Absence of Deliberate Silence, Organized By Lacey Haslam
Based on composer John Cageʼs now infamous 4'33'' piece, a three movement composition that is nearly
five minutes of sounds from the immediate environment, curator/gallerist Lacey Haslam has organized
“Absence of Deliberate Silence.” By choosing drawings and paintings with strong almost vibrant
compositions, many incorporating elements of surprise found in the unexpected gesture or color, Haslam
has created a show that makes no attempt to corral each individual piece as they relate to one another
rather, selects works that emphasizes the randomness found in the moments of creation.
Featured in the exhibition will be work from Billy White, Jonathan Velazquez, Ann Meade, Jeremy
Burleson, Deatra Colbert, Julio Del Rio, Felecia Griffin, Erica Martinez, Jonathan Valdivias, Demetri
Pertoupolos and Luis Estrada. Also on view will be a three part silent video of Jonathan Velazquez
performing as Michael Jackson performing a trio of Jackson classic tunes. Yes, we will have the disco ball
operating in the main gallery again.
Lacey Haslam is the director of BLOCK Gallery, a site-specific exhibition program that takes place in
alternative and public spaces and creator of the Archive project, a collection of books sourced from the
personal libraries of today's most influential creative minds. In both endeavors, Haslam works to further
embed creative thought into our daily routine and broaden our definition of what art is – not merely as an
object, but as the conversation catalyzed by the object. The Archive Project will be on view at NIAD in
2016.
Rock And Roll Over: The Work of Buck Shanty Buck Shanty has been making art that lives in the grey area surrounding pop art and music. His work -often a hybrid of post-war childrenʼs storybooks and contemporary thought -- is a commentary on the end
of the American Dream. On view in “Rock And Roll Over,” will be a selection of his works on paper.
Sean Moloney (aka Buck Shanty) is a Los Angeles native. A member of the early LA punk movement
Shanty has curated exhibitions of punk and hardcore artists, including Exene Cervenka, Raymond
Pettibon and Dennis Hopper, in the South Lands.
Rock And Roll Over Again: The KISS Drawings Of Heather Copus
Gene Simmons. Paul Stanley. Ace Frehley. Eric Singer.
The members of KISS appear frequently in Heather Copusʼ densely layered work. As a matter of fact,
Heather herself is an encyclopedia of facts and trivial about the band. In the gallery backroom, “Rock And
Roll Over Again” features more than a dozen drawings and paintings fom Copus and offers a look at one
NIAD artistʼs obsessive love of rock.
Algorithms: The Work Of Carlos Fernandez
Carlos Fernandez explores the intersections of geometry and repetition. While his work tends to feature a
certain flatness often associated with minimalism, his lightness of touch and continued exploration of an
image (either natural or mathematical) lifts the work into associations with the Mission School and even
Agnes Martin. “Algorithms” presents a brief look at the recent work of Fernandez.
About NIAD Art Center
NIADʼs visual art program promotes meaningful independent living by artists with disabilities—while its
artists create remarkable contemporary art. In a unique open studio environment, and with the guidance
of qualified staff, NIAD artists acquire new skills in artistic practice and in independent living. As artists
paint, build sculpture, mold clay, or work with textiles, their skills of observation and project management
improve. As they explore and express their creativity, exhibit artwork in professional-quality galleries,
participate in the community, and occasionally earn money from selling art, their feelings of independence
and self-esteem increase. Each NIAD artwork is an original piece of contemporary art that tells an
individual story from the perspective of an artist with disabilities. Frequently remarkable, surprising, and
engaging, NIAD artwork has become a highlight of the Richmond art scene and has received recognition
from the national artistic community. Wondering what NIADʼs acronym stand for? Nurturing Independence
through Artistic Development. For more information, visit niadart.org.
