Course Description:
Topics include signed numbers, variables, the order of operations;
addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of signed numbers and
polynomials. Solve linear equations, inequalities; factor, graph. Solve
word problems, systems of equations, rational equations, radicals and
quadratic equations

COURSE CONTENT:
We will study selected chapters from 1 - 11 of the textbook.

This is FREE TUTORING SO YOU HAVE NO EXCUSE. It starts from
DAY 1
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
After successful completion of this course , students will be able to perform
a) Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of signed numbers,
fractions and order of operations
b) Evaluation of Variables and algebraic expressions
c) Apply laws of exponents in operations on monomials, multiply and
divide polynomials and to write, multiply and divide in scientific notation
d) Solve linear equations, inequalities and word problems
e) Factor polynomials. Apply factoring to solve quadratic equations
f) Simplify, add, subtract, multiply and divide rational expressions
g) Graph linear equations. Use point-slope formula and slope-intercept
formula to find the equation of a line
h) Solve systems of linear equations in two variables by the graphing ,
substitution and elimination methods
i) Simplify radical expressions : add, subtract, multiply and divide radicals
j) Apply completing the square method and the quadratic formula to solve
quadratic equations. Solve radical equations and graph parabolas.

Student Conduct:

TEXTING or playing with your phone in class is PROHIBITED.
Phones should be off your desks and hidden. . You will be asked to
leave for the day if caught playing in any manner with your phone
in class
 Because of liability considerations, children of any age must not come
to class with you.
 Definitely no eating, drinking, smoking or chewing gum is allowed in
class. Clear water in a closed bottle is okay in class.
 All other foods and drinks MUST NOT be brought to class

How To Succeed
1. You must attend class every class day
2. You should NOT be late nor leave early
3. Must do all your homework , clearly and correctly and submit on time
4. Make use of my Office hours AND Tutoring Center , make the time and
come in for extra help or go get the help for free for extended hours with
tutors in Maripossa Hall ( Library) BEFORE QUIZ OR TEST
5. You must be attentive in class because your quizzes and tests will be based
on class lectures and quizzes done in class
6. It will help if you have a “drama-free” life
You are encouraged to pair up with a friend or two and do the homework
and to study together but each individual is responsible for his/her homework
. Independent work is required during a quiz or test.
Working together helps a lot.
ATTENDANCE POLICIES:
You May be dropped for excessive absences. If you missed a total of 4 (
ONE WEEK ) or more classes at any time through out the semester, you
MAY be dropped. You Must Attend Classes all first week of this SPRING
semester, in order to secure your enrollment in this class, else you MAY be
dropped. Coming in late or leaving early for FIVE times = 1 absence
HOMEWORK:
Homework will be assigned every class day and will be due on TEST DAYS,
on MONDAYS , just before the test . I will answer a couple of questions
on the next class day on sections covered in the last class meeting. You must
do all correctly and show all work clearly to receive any credit. Zero
points is awarded to magically obtained answers. Homework counts for 100
pts = 10 % of Grade. All late homework gets ZERO points

You can do the homework either on paper or online using “ MyMathLab” or
a combination of both. The online course ID = : simpsonrodgers98307
Don’t do it on scratch paper. Do clearly on papers or folder as though you
will submit it to me, that way you will be able to have something to review
from for the Quiz and Test. But as soon as you do it online, I will get it on
my computer and you should not submit a paper form too. That will be too
much work on your part. YOU WILL NEED THE myMathLab code to do
homework online. This code is sold in a package with the book. You can buy
it direct from pearson as a package( cheapest) or buy it in the LATTC
bookstore ( cheaper ). It is most expensive if you buy the book separate from
the code.
It is highly recommended that you do the homework online . You will
get help in solving the problems by being walked through similarly
solved problems with the online version in the comfort of your home.
CLASSWORK
There will be class work each day and will be collected at the end of
class. The total of class work counts as 100 pts = 10 % of course grade.
No Late class work will be accepted.
Any extra class work replaces missed or lower class work scores
QUIZ :
There will be a quiz every THURSDAY . Each worth 15 pts . These quizzes
are based on the class work and homework. Your very best 10 quizzes will be
counted . Any extra quizzes replaces missed or lower quiz scores. These 10
quizzes count for a total of 150 points = 15% of grade. NO MAKE-UPS
on any quiz.
SOLUTIONS POSTED :
Solutions to quizzes and classwork will be posted on moodle website for your
review. There will be additional solutions on every quiz that you MUST
know in order to prepare and do well on your exams
TESTS :
There will be 3 Tests and one comprehensive final exam. YOU MUST
TAKE EVERY TEST and they will be based on the homework, Quizzes,
class lectures, and previous tests. Each Test is worth 150 points = 15%
for a total of 450 Points = 45 % of grade. NO MAKE-UPS on any TEST.
PICTURE ID REQUIRED :
You must have a picture ID to be allowed to take any test.
LATTC issued picture ID with your clear picture on it. If yours is faded,
GET A NEW ONE; or CA driver license or CA DMV issued ID

Any Exam correction must be brought to my attention no later than one
week after the test is returned. Beyond one week, no correction will be
considered .

There will be one cumulative comprehensive final exam. YOU Must Take
The Final Exam In Order To Pass This Class. The final Exam is worth 200
points = 20 %.
Exam and Test dates are subject to change .
New dates will be announced in class. It is your responsibility to know what
the new dates are. I reserve the right to modify any part of the syllabus at
my discretion
A BREAK :
You may take a test before the formal test date if you have a tangible
reason. However , you cannot take any test after the scheduled test date.
If you choose to take a test before the class date, you must meet with me
personally ( phone calls and emails the day before / during/ or after the test
will not be considered as meeting with me ) at least two weeks before the
scheduled test day and I will arrange with you to take the test on
THURSDAY of THE WEEK BEFORE the week of the scheduled test
date. The percentage on the final exam MAY be substituted for only one
missed test ( for circumstances beyond your means, like illness, accident
etc ) or ONE lowest test score in addition to counting as the score on the
final. ( eg, if you missed a test and you get 100 % = 200 points on the final
exam, then you will get all 150 points for the missed test/lowest score and
the score on the final will still stand as 200 pts

900 -1000 points = 90 – 100 % = A
800 – 899 points = 80 – 89% = B
700 - 799 points = 70 – 79%
= C = Credit/ No credit
600 - 699 points = 60 – 69%
= D
