This widely acclaimed training focuses on components of the Colonomos model of interpreting in a
low stress, highly interactive environment. This workshop is for novice and experienced interpreters.

NMRID is approved by the RID CMP to sponsor Continuing Education Activities. This program is
offered for 1.3 CEU’s in the content area of professional studies.
Workshop Description
Learn how to convey equivalent messages by working through graduated texts and activities in
consecutive and simultaneous modes of interpreting. Work on skills in small-group formats.
Participants develop tools for understanding and improving their own internal processes, develop
language necessary to discuss the interpreting task with each other, and integrate strategies for
continuing improvement.
About the Presenter
Betty M. Colonomos, currently serving as Director of the Bilingual Mediation Center, is a fluent
ASL/English bilingual. Her academic background is in Deaf Education/Speech Pathology (B.S.),
Counseling (M.A.) Linguistics (Doctoral program). Betty holds the Masters Comprehensive Skills
Certificate (MCSC) from RID. She was the second recipient of the Mary Stotler Award for excellence
in Interpreter Education from CIT. Betty has chaired and served on many national committees on
standards and evaluation of interpreters and served as President of the Conference of Interpreter
Trainers (CIT).
Ms. Colonomos has authored and appeared in video materials on interpreting and she co-authored
(with MJ Bienvenu) videos on Deaf Culture, ASL Facial Grammar, and ASL Numbers. She worked as
an International Sign interpreter for numerous conferences worldwide. Betty also consults with
schools and the legal system as an expert on linguistic and cultural issues impacting the Deaf
Community.

If participants mention that they are attending an NMSD event, they will be given a special rate of
$99 per night plus taxes and a parking fee of $5 per night.
The Sage Inn provides free breakfast and WiFi.
NMSD Cottages
Lodging is available on campus Friday and Saturday night.
Cost is $50 for both nights (Friday and Saturday) or $30 for one night.
Cottage lodging fees must be paid at the time of registration.
Linens are provided, and cottages include a full shared kitchen if guests want to bring their own
food. Guests will need to bring their own toiletries and personal items.
