on in the current real estate market? Is it really a
good time to buy? Can buyers get mortgages? What if
you need to sell? Where are the opportunities in the
current market, and who is best positioned to take advantage of them? How have the proliferation of blogs
and increased access to information online changed
the nature of the NYC marketplace for buyers and
sellers? The media loves to speculate, but we have the
real answers. Our esteemed panelists will cover these
topics and more in an engaging discussion on the current state of the NYC real estate market. Speakers:

Skills |
Tuesday, October 27th, 7:00 p.m. Practically all senior
executives find themselves in the following position
at some time in their career: Your former title and job
description are X and the job posting states requirements of Y. In practice and substance, the difference
between jobs X and Y is small, and during your 20
plus years as executive X you have come across just
about everything that executive Y would need to
know or do. However, the title, reporting hierarchy,
company size, compensation structure, and industry
of Y are different, and the hiring manager, corporate
HR, and recruiter are determined to simplify the
process and exclude everyone who is not a perfect
match. Do you look at the odds of being hired and
move on, or develop tactics and strategies to convince
all the gatekeepers that your skills not only are easily
transferable, but perhaps also preferable to those listed
in the job posting?
Two experts in the field of career management and
corporate recruiting will discuss methods of marketing transferable skills, with an emphasis on dealing
with the narrow and by-the-book hiring procedures
of most companies. Presentations are followed by
group Q&A.

MANAG E R ’S
“How’s the Club doing?” Members frequently ask me that
question, and with even more frequency in light of the
economic turmoil that has been on all of our minds over
the past year. The short answer is that we are doing OK,
but that does need some qualification.
past few months have shown some weakness, and our
fall months will probably not be as strong as in previous
years. However, as we look towards the late winter and
early spring months, there are signs that our activities
will be getting back on track.
The economic slowdown has certainly had an effect on
the Penn Club. Our operating departments are less active,
and we have experienced a decrease in our total membership numbers. While we need to keep an eye on these
areas, they don’t tell the whole story.
Although our financial performance may not have been
quite “up-to-par” recently, it’s been exciting to note that
the Penn Club has remained a reliable source of comfort
and community for our members. Use of the Business
Center has increased significantly, our Living Room is
often filled with members connecting or just taking a
break, and our Club in general has been THE gathering
place for our members and their guests. In the final
analysis, that’s what private clubs are all about. It’s not
the building or its facilities that draw members in. It’s the
fact that they are a place for individuals with common
interests to gather and socialize. I am proud to see that
the Penn Club has grown into the quintessential private
social club in just fifteen short years, and I know all of you
share in that pride as well.
The Penn Club entered this recession in a very strong
position. We had no debt on our books, and there were
no capital projects on the horizon. Thanks to the Board of
Directors’ foresight and support, we have been able to be
vigilant with our preventive maintenance programs. The
result is that our facilities remain in excellent condition.
In addition, due to some very strong prior years, we have
been able to build a fairly strong cash reserve. These
factors have combined to place us in a good position to
weather this storm.
Due to their nature, private clubs generally begin to feel
the full effects of a recession slower than the rest of the
economy, and they likewise begin to feel the effects of
a recovery somewhat behind other businesses. This has
proven true this time as well. The Club ended our fiscal
year on June 30, 2009 in a fairly strong position. The
My staff and I look forward to being a part of your

hope to see you often at your home-away-from-home in

A Hidden Life, a Memoir of

husband, Jim, encouraged her to return to Holland to chronicle
the two years, seven months, and one day she had spent hiding
from the Nazis in rural Holland in the attic of a farmhouse in
which for a time a contingent of German soldiers was billeted.
In 1969, she finally made the trip. Accompanied by Jim and
their two young children, Reiss intended to spend seven weeks
researching and reliving those years in hiding, which would eventually become The Upstairs Room. But unknown to the millions of people
who went on to read her beloved classic, there was a still darker tale: Reiss’
husband returned to America early and committed suicide at age thirty-seven, leaving no note. In Reiss’ new book, A Hidden Life, a Memoir of August
1969, she has attempted to take an adult reader through her grief, anger,
guilt, and finally, to acceptance that she had to set off on yet another journey
of survival. Subtle and disturbing, the book is a powerful consideration of
memory, violence and loss, told in a stunning and sparse narrative style.
Johanna Reiss is a NYC resident and author of the young adult title The
Upstairs Room, which Elie Wiesel praised in the New York Times Book
Review as an “admirable account . . . as important in every respect as the
one bequeathed to us by Anne Frank.” She is the winner of the Newbery
Honor, the Jewish Book Council Children’s Book Award, and the Buxtehuder Bulle, a prestigious German award. CL ASS( Y ) Happy

the Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, this spirited,
bittersweet novel captures the Arab-Israeli conflict in microcosm. The seaside city is home to a family of Christian Arabs: irascible
Elias, the patriarch; his busy daughter-in-law, Umm-Huda; and her fatherless daughters, the beautiful Mary and her older, deplorably still unwed
sister Huda. Also living in their crowded building in the wadi, or Arab
quarter, is newcomer Alex, short in stature but well-muscled, a RussianJewish immigrant who plays his trumpet soulfully in the building’s rooftop
shed. His music, patience and remarkable physique awaken the interest of
reticent Huda, while Mary rejects the advances of Zuhair, the son of their
shady Muslim landlord, for the security of plodding Wahid, her Muslim
cousin. A trip taken by the two couples to the Red Sea resort of Eilat is an
uproarious highlight, and a visit by Huda and Alex to a nursing home to
see Alex’s ailing but tyrannical mother is a striking set-piece. The translation is occasionally stiff, and Michael tends toward over-explanation, but
the novel deals cleverly and humorously with complicated relationships.
Against the tragic backdrop of current events, the willingness of Michael’s
characters to ignore the strictures of individual religious beliefs and to shun
fanaticism, is refreshing, though perhaps increasingly hard to credit.

Linda Fairstein on Law & Literature |
Tuesday, November 17th, 7:00 p.m. USA TODAY labeled former prosecutor
Linda Fairstein “a champion teller of detective tales.”
Fairstein, a Vassar graduate (’69), a lawyer (University of Virginia ’72)
and an internationally best-selling crime novelist, ran the pioneering Sex
Crimes Prosecution Unit of the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office for
almost three decades. She is the author of eleven crime novels in the Alexandra Cooper series, which have been translated into more than a dozen
languages, and of a non-fiction work—Sexual Violence: Our War Against
Rape—which was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year in 1994.
The latest book in the series is this year’s Lethal Legacy, in which Fairstein
explores the treasures—and the dark side of rare book and map collectors—of the famed New York Public Library. The thriller was both critically acclaimed and a New York Times bestseller.
Fairstein will discuss her dual career, from law to literature, describing the
ground-breaking work of her unit in legislative reform and the practical innovations that changed the way sexual assault and domestic violence cases
are investigated in this country. Her fictional protagonist, Alex Cooper,
has Fairstein’s job and mirrors her professional passion for the fascinating
work that formed the basis for both fact and fictional storytelling.
Linda Fairstein is a commentator for the major television networks and
cable news, has won numerous awards for both her legal career and her
literary success.

Jerryanne Heath
Jerryanne Heath, C’04 and D’05, is rising entrepreneur and humanitarian. She is
founder and CEO of ConceptLink Consulting, www.conceptlinkconsulting.com,
which helps international non-profits connect with their stakeholders through highimpact events and strategic communications. Jerryanne is most recognizable by her stunning afro — which she says helps her stand
out and acts as an outlet for creative self-expression. This single Brooklyn resident
enjoys Afro-Latin dance (salsa, kizomba, zouk), international travel, volunteer work
and reading. Most recently, she co-chaired the first major forum on African social
entrepreneurship, an event held in New York at the Desmond Tutu Center.
Ms. Heath joined The Penn Club in August of 2008 because as an entrepreneur, she thought the
Penn Club and its amenities would be beneficial to her business. She often hosts client events,
meetings and educational seminars here. The club even acts as a satellite office when she needs to
get work done in Manhattan. Jerryanne adores The Penn Club staff and enjoys the opportunity to
network with other Penn alumni and club members.

Tuesdays |
3rd Tuesday of each month—October 20th, 4–5:00

members get closer to snagging that perfect job.
On October 20th, there will be two special guests
joining this Pink Slip event: Laura Goldberg, a
noted media strategist who has been impacted
by layoffs—twice—and lived to tell the tale; and
communications consultant Christopher Mortell,

A reception from 6:00 to 6:30 p.m. is included

Liz Caskey, C’ 99, will present on South
American wines following the meal. The

and coming. In 2004, she studied in the Sommelier
School in Santiago. The wine bug bit so hard, shortly
after she joined forces with her husband, Francisco,
to create Liz Caskey Culinary & Wine Experiences,
and they were on their way. Today, the company
offers private standardized and tailor-made culinary
and wine journeys in Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay.
Liz’s mission is to connect clients as insiders through

life, festivals, and spectacular nature. Menu:

In 2009, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
(NBCAM) celebrates its 25th anniversary. Since its
inception a quarter century ago, NBCAM has been
at the forefront of promoting awareness of breast
cancer issues and has evolved along with the national
dialogue on breast cancer. Today, NBCAM recognizes
that although many great strides have been made in
breast cancer awareness and treatment, there remains
much to be accomplished. As NBCAM celebrates its
25th anniversary, they remain dedicated to educating
Penn Club President
Gerald Knorr
and empowering women to take charge of their own
breast health by practicing regular self-breast exams
to identify any changes, scheduling regular visits and
annual mammograms with their healthcare provider,
adhering to prescribed treatment and knowing the
facts about recurrence.
October 16th is National Mammography Day.
On this day, or throughout the month, women are
encouraged to make a mammography appointment.
