Oklahoma HOME OF THE SOONERS Oklahoma History -Oklahoma gets its name from Choctaw. Oklahoma means red people in Choctaw. -Abraham Lincoln gave the legal settlers 160 acres of public land in 1862. -Oklahoma became part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 -Oklahoma was became a state on November 16th 1907. More History Was created from the Indians and the Oklahoma territory. -In 1930 over 1,000,000 moved from Oklahoma to California because Oklahoma had a dust bowl and Great Depression. Oklahoma is also called the “Sooner State” because settlers would cross the border and break the law Attractions & Entertainment in Oklahoma Penn Square Mall The Penn Square Mall was opened in 1960. The mall is open from 10am to 9pm.The mall has two floors, a theater inside and also has over 145 stores. Also a great hotel thats connected to the mall as well. Riverwind Casino Riverwind is more than just a casino. Riverwind also offers a restaurant and also they have a food court and several bars. And they also have a hotel that has 100 rooms, over 2,700 slot machines and also they also host poker tournaments. Oklahoma History Center The history center is a museum. Each year they host a competition thats called national day. They have a number of galleries there. Attractions & Entertainment in Oklahoma Chesapeake Energy Arena. The arena is located in Downtown Oklahoma. The arena is a great place to go if you want to be entertained. The arena hosts many events such as basketball games, arena football, hockey concerts and WWE. Oklahoma City Zoo Rated one of the top three familyfriendly zoo in the nation. The zoo has over 1500 animals. The zoo is open every day of the week except Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. The have rare animals that other zoo’s doesn’t carry. White Water Bay The Water Bay is a great outdoor amusement park. It has over 25 acres of water. Also have slides and rides that you can also enjoy while you’re there. Oklahoma Sooners College Football The Sooners represent The University Of Oklahoma.The Oklahoma Sooners had their first season in 1895. The Sooners is the most successful program. And have the highest winning percentage. The won 7 national championships and won 44 conference championships. The playing field is called Owens Field after Bennie Owens. College Basketball The Sooners are in the Big 12 conference. The Sooners finished this season 24-11 under the four year head coach Lon Kruger. And they also won the sweet sixteen. Oklahoma is ranked 3rd in the country. Oklahoma has been in the final four, four times. College Baseball The Sooners baseball team won two national championships. The won one in 1951 and another in 1994. So far the Oklahoma Sooner baseball team is 24-15. Casey Bookout set a team season record with 26 home runs in a season back in 1998. The current coach is Pete Hughes. Beavers Bend & Hochatown State Park Beaver Bend was established in 1937. There are a number of things to do there like fishing, horseback riding and hayrides. They also have hikes natural art classes, water sports, bingo and scuba diving and much more amazing events. Natural Attractions Quartz Mountain Resort The Quartz Mountain Resort was designed in 1935 and was built in 1955. The lodge had 44 rooms the rooms are clean and also the location is absolutely incredible and a outdoor and indoor pool. Quartz became the property of the Oklahoma board of regents for higher education in 2002. It was made or red and black igneous rocks. They have a golf club, hold weddings events. Natural Falls State Park Natural Falls has a 77 foot waterfall. There is seating at the base of the fall. Picnic tables and grills can be found throughout the park. There is also a trail around Natural Falls the trail in three and a half miles long. And they also have many more activities. And dogs are allowed too, but only on a leash. Downtown Oklahoma City Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Steakhouse The Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Steakhouse is one of the best steak joints in the world. They specialty is a juicy half pound burger and curly fries. The steakhouse has been open for over 105 years. It first opened in 1910. And is one of Oklahoma operated restaurants. Downtown Oklahoma City is so beautiful it is very large. It has 115 city blocks. There are plenty of hotels and places to eat as well. There is so much to see and do there. Boston Avenue Methodist Church The church was built in 1929. The church is considered to be one of the best churches in the United States. At the top of the church there are two hands that are rising upwards and praying. The building is made of metal, glass, limestone and terra cotta. Historical Attractions Fort Gibson Fort Gibson was built in 1824. Fort Gibson had a peacekeeping mission and for more than 50 years no battles was fought there. The building was built of the intention of a place where there was no violence just peace. They mostly was trying to protect Southwest border of the Louisiana Purchase and also guarded the American Frontier in Indian Territory from 1824 until 1890. Murrell Home The Murrell home was built in 1845. Mostly African slaves. Murrell Home is a mansion that was owned by George M. Murrell who was a wealthy while planter. During the Civil War the area surrounded the Murrell home was destroyed. The Murrell Home was the only building that survived the conflict. The house was declared a National Historical Landmark in 1974 Unusual Attractions Masonic Home for the Aged The Masonic Home is known to be a haunted house. It was built in 1926. It help about 80 to 100 retired people lived in there. Legend says that it’s one of the scariest houses. In the 70’s the building was closed down and moved across town. In 1995 the building was donated and used as a storage. Skirvin Hotel The Skirvin Hotel opened in 1911. when it first opened it had 225 rooms and also had 12 floors. Ten years later they have added over 300 more rooms. NBA players have said that the hotel is haunted and also said the owner had had sex with one of the maids and he had got her pregnant and locker her in a hotel room on the 10th floor. And after she had the kid she was depressed and jumped out of a window and killed herself.
