MDU Technology Providers - Broadband Communities Magazine
logy Prov o n h c e T ide U rs MD — 2015 — The providers that MDU property owners rely on for technology amenities A BBC Staff Report F or the fourth year, Broadband Communities presents a Top 100 list dedicated to companies that serve the MDU market. This list is technology neutral, as opposed to the FTTH Top 100 list that Broadband Communities publishes each July. A property owner whose most urgent priority is to improve indoor cellular coverage, get satellite dishes off balconies or add more high-definition stations to a community’s channel lineup can find resources here. The list focuses on technologies that owners use to make properties attractive to residents rather than technologies they use to operate their buildings efficiently. Companies on the list do one or more of the following: • Sell video, Internet, telephone, managed Wi-Fi and related services to residents of multifamily properties, either individually or in bulk, through agreements with property owners • Design, build or manage broadband networks To nominate your company or a technology partner for the 2016 Top 100 MDU Technology Providers list, send an email to [email protected]. • • • • • • in multifamily properties under contract to property owners or service providers Offer expertise to property owners or MDU service providers about the legal, financial and marketing aspects of delivering broadband Provide equipment for wired broadband networks in MDUs Provide equipment for video headends and video distribution in MDUs Provide equipment for wireless broadband (either cellular or Wi-Fi) in MDUs Provide back-office software or services for subscriber management, customer care, billing and related functions Offer solutions for MDU technology amenities beyond the triple-play. Some companies sell products and services directly to property owners, and others sell products and services to their providers, such as private cable operators. However, whether property owners deal directly or indirectly with these companies, they all provide solutions that property owners should be aware of. CRITERIA AND SELECTION PROCESS To select the Top 100 MDU technology providers, Broadband Communities consulted a panel of industry experts. Because experts don’t always agree and because changes were taking place in the industry as this feature was researched and prepared, the magazine’s editors made the final selections. 26 | BROADBAND COMMUNITIES | www.broadbandcommunities.com | OCTOBER 2015 MDU TOP 100 AT A GLANCE Alphabetical List . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | 28 Service Providers . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | 30 Design, Engineering, Installation and Service Management . . . . . . . . | 34 Other Consulting and Contract Negotiation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | 36 Equipment – Wired Broadband . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | 38 Equipment – Video Headend, Video Distribution and Related . . . . . . | 42 Equipment – Wireless Broadband . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | 44 Back-Office Software and Services . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | 46 Broadband Applications . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | 50 Companies to Watch for 2016 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . | 52 To qualify, companies must operate in the U.S. market and meet the following criteria: • Provide products or services that help property owners create technology amenities to attract and retain residents The technology amenities that attract and retain residents vary depending on the residents in question. Some demographics look for blazing Internet speeds, over-thetop video solutions and ubiquitous wireless coverage; others want a wide variety of linear TV channels; others may want specialized channel lineups or the option of health-monitoring solutions. Of the companies on this list, some offer services targeted to specific niches, and others offer flexible solutions that can be tailored to the needs of each particular community. • Have histories of innovation and successful deployments Companies on the list may have been recommended by advisory panel members based on first- hand knowledge or may have been subjects of case studies in this magazine or elsewhere. • Identify MDUs as a target market Many technology products are frequently used in MDUs but are not specifically marketed to or for them. For example, cable set-top boxes are found throughout MDUs everywhere, but they cannot be specifically classified as MDU products. Though only a minority of the companies on this list focus exclusively on the MDU market, most have sales divisions or specialized offerings that address this market and cater to its needs. Don’t miss the “Companies to Watch” list – a dozen companies that may not be as large or well-established as the Top 100 but are making names for themselves with innovative offerings. To nominate your company or a technology partner for next year’s list, write to [email protected]. It takes an ecosystem to deliver great technology to a multifamily community.
