MISSION STATEMENT
Being the apex body in the field of sports in the Country, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) aims
at broadbasing of sports and achievement of excellence in sports performance through
identification of talent; provision and sports infrastructure; training of sports professionals; and
field coaching with incentives, with the support of Government of India. Being the premier sports
institute of the Asian region, our mission is education, academic enquiry and advancement of
knowledge in the field of sports and sports sciences; and also to make our contribution in the field
of sports training and coaching; with the ultimate goal of broadbasing of sports and achievement
of excellence, in sports performance.
In 1973, the Institute was dedicated to the memory of late freedom fighter Netaji Subhas Chandra
Bose, and renamed as Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports. The Institute was merged with
the Sports Authority of India (SAI) in 1987.
NIS Patiala is, at present, the Academic Wing and the main academic centre of SAI. The Institute
also has three academic sub-centres at the SAI Regional Centres; the SAI Netaji Subhas
Southern Centre, Bangalore; SAI Netaji Subhas Eastern Centre, Kolkata; and SAI LNCPE,
Thiruvananthapuram. The Institute also conducts some regular and periodic sports education
programmes at these centres and some other selected centres from time to time.
Besides being the academic centre of the SAI, the Institute also performs the important task of
training of elite sportspersons for international competitions. This is also facilitated by the SAI
High Altitude Training Centre (HATC), Shilaroo, (Himachal Pradesh), being managed by this
Institute.
DIPLOMA IN SPORTS COACHING
SAI is conducting one year ‘Diploma in Sports Coaching’ for the academic session 2015-16 starting from 1st July
2015 at its all academic centres i.e. Patiala, Bangalore, Kolkata and Thiruvananthapuram. The sports disciplines
included in the ‘Diploma in Sports Coaching’ for the session 2015-16 are being conducted at our following centres:

AGE LIMIT:
20 to 35 years as on 1st July of the year of admission. Relaxable upto three years in upper age for international
players i.e. Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Olympic Games, World Championship and SC/ST/OBC
candidates.
COURSE DURATION:
12 Months: 1st July to 30th April (10 months period of the course) and two months compulsory Internship from May
to June.

ENTRANCE TEST:
The selection of candidates for admission will be carried out through written test, practical tests, Interview and
medical fitness examination.

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION:

Through lectures, discussion, seminars, paper readings, projects, films/video analysis and
assignments.
Participation in practical classes; conduct of coaching classes; competitions and officiating.
ATTENDANCE:
A student of Diploma Course requires minimum of 85% attendance to be eligible to appear in examination.
HOLIDAYS:
Sundays, second Saturdays and Central Government gazetted holidays.
NOTE:
Final admission to the course will be subject to medical fitness of the candidate. Decision of the selection committee
will be final and binding. Sports Authority of India reserves the right to cancel any education programme, change the
venue, and also increase the duration of a course, due to administrative reasons etc.

SUPPLEMENTARY EXAMINATION:
A) Specialised Sports
Two chances are given to the trainees to pass the specialised sports subjects as a supplementary candidate.
First chance will be given in the month of July 2016 and second chance will be given in December 2016.
B) Sports Sciences
Two chances are given to the trainees to pass the sports sciences subjects as a supplementary candidate.
First chance will be given in the month of March 2016 and second chance will be given in December 2016.
C) Unsuccessful trainees in two chances of supplementary examinations will have to appear in all the subjects
as afresh.
D) Fee for supplementary examination: Rs.300/- per paper for first attempt and Rs.500/- per paper for second
attempt.
RE-EVALUATION
A) Re-evaluation is permitted within seven days after the announcement of the result.
B) Fee for Re-evaluation: Rs.200/- per paper in normal case. Rs.750/- per paper in urgent case.
IMPROVING THE GRADE
Trainees are allowed to avail the chance of improving the grade within three years of passing out the final
examination with a fee of Rs.5000/-.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR FILLING-UP OF ADMISSION FORM

Each applicant should submit only one application for the course
Form must be filled in applicant’s own hand-writing in capital letters only.
Use only black or blue ball pen to fill up the form.
Applicant must paste their recent colour photograph (not older than three months) in the
appropriate place. Do not pin or staple the photograph.
Over-writing, striking off or erasing in any form may lead to rejection and should be avoided. Any
discrepancy in the statement and/or submission of incomplete Application will lead to its rejection.
Retain a photocopy of filled application for future reference.
The Application should include the following documents:
o Detailed mark-sheet of educational qualification.
o The photocopies taken on A4 size paper only. The print should be clear and legible. Both
side are to be photocopied, if the original mark card is printed on both sides.
Do not staple or clip the Application with any other enclosure; keep it loose. Copies of all mark
cards and certificates must be stapled together. Demand draft must be kept loose.
The demand draft should be drawn in favour of ‘Executive Director (A), SAI NSNIS’, payable at
Patiala.
Name and game of the candidate should be mentioned on the reverse of the demand draft.
Fee once remitted shall not be refunded under any circumstances.
Prospectus / Application fee / Entrance Test fees is Rs.500/-.
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:
1.The application form completed in all respects should be accompanied with the bank draft of Rs.500/- as
administrative charges (non-refundable) in favour of the head of concerned centre (as mentioned below).
2.Copies of the certificates mentioned therein along with copy of matriculation certificate showing age
proof must be attached with the application form. Candidate can send self-attested photo copies of their
certificates. Incomplete application will not be considered. 3.Fix one stamp size latest photograph on the
form and bring two stamp size photographs at the time of interview. 4.Original certificates are to be
produced at the time of reporting for registration. Candidates shall not be permitted to attend admission
tests/interview, if the required certificates and marks sheets are not provided. 5.Call letters will be sent to
each eligible candidate for admission tests/interview. The list of eligible candidates will also be uploaded at
our website well in time. If any candidate did not receive call letter due to some postal reason and his/her
name is available in the list of eligible candidates at our website, such candidates are advised to report for
admission test/interview at the concerned centre. In case of insufficient space in any of the columns of
application, to give additional information, separate sheet may be used. 6.Final selection will be based on
the tests (theory & practical) conducted at the centre concerned and medical fitness examination. The
admission will be summarily be cancelled at any stage during the course, if any discrepancy regarding
eligibility and medical fitness comes to the notice even after the commencement or towards completion of
the course. The Institute will not bear any liability in such cases. SAI reserves the right to change the
venue of the course of candidate due to administrative reasons. 7.The diploma course is of ten months
duration (July to April) plus two months mandatory internship at any SAI Regional Centres/Sub Centres in
India. 8.None of the trainee will be allowed to participate in the State/National level or any competition
during diploma course.

STUDENT SERVICES & FACILITIES
Hostel Accommodation:
Since most of the education programmes of the Institute are of the residential type, the Institute has a number of
hostels for men and women. The accommodation is partly dormitory type, partly non-AC with attached baths and
partly AC with attached bath. These hostels accommodate students of various education programmes and the elite
sportspersons training at the Institute for International competitions.
Boarding:
The various hostels of the institute also cater to the boarding requirements of the students and the elite
sportspersons. The students are provided nutritious food, on reasonable rates.
Health Centre:
The Health Centre of the Institute takes care of the clinical health of the staff, students, and elite sportspersons. The
Centre maintains a small ward, for taking care of the indisposed and injured. The Health Centre has facilities of
Physiotherapy, Hydrotherapy, X-ray and Clinical Laboratory, and is manned by qualified and experienced
professionals.
Sauna and Steam Bath:
The Institute also has the recovery facility of Sauna and Steam Bath which is exclusively meant for the elite
sportspersons, who train on the Institute campus, for international competitions.
General Store/Saloon:
The small private market, on the Institute campus, has the facility of the provisions of general needs, a hair cutting
saloon and a beauty parlour, for the benefit of staff and the students, living on the campus.
Insurance:
Each student has to get himself/herself insured against injuries during the course. The health insurance premier is to
be paid by the students.
Anti-Harrasment Panel:
In view of the Government instructions, the Institute has constituted a Standing Committee to look after the
complaints of harassment, if any.
Placement Portal:
A portal has been constituted for sourcing adequate manpower, with definite skill sets, in the field of sports
coaching/sports medicine for employment by the States, and other organizations and institutions. This Placement
Portal would endow opportunities for wider choices in placements, for qualified personnel who have qualified through
our education programmes.
Recreation and Entertainment:
A Common Room is provided in each hostel, with the facility of a TV and recreational Games, for the students.
Cultural programmes are also organized, at the Institute, in collaboration with the Student Council,from time to time.
Student Council:
The students elect their own representatives, which form the Student Council. The Student Council takes care of the
welfare of the students and organizes entertainment, cultural programmes and picnics, in collaboration with the
Institute management.
Bank:
The State Bank of Patiala, a nationalized bank, has its full-fledged branch, on the Institute campus.
Post Office:
The Government has set up a Post Office counter, on the Institute Campus, for the benefit of the staff, students and
sportspersons training at the Institute.
Institute Library:
The Institute maintains an exclusive sports library which has a collection of about 20,000 books on various sports
and sports science disciplines. The library also subscribes to a large number of Indian and foreign sports
magazines and sports research journals. Faculty members and a large number of students and researchers avail
this facility.
Audio Visual Section:
Since audio-visual technology plays an important role in the teaching and coaching of sports, the Institute
maintains an Audio-visual Section, which caters to the needs of the academic programmes. The students are
taught through the audio-visual teaching aids like overhead projector, television, multimedia.
Computer Cell:
For the benefit of the Faculty and students, the Institute maintains a Computer Cell, managed by Deputy
Director/Sr. Analyst. This Cell provides facilities of composing, desktop printing & internet to the Institute officials,
teachers and students.
Information Technology Training:
Considering the importance of information technology in sports, the students of various sports education
programmes are provided sufficient training in computer science, by the professionals of the Computer Cell of the
Institute.
