STEM STEM Marin Biotech Academy Global Academy TBD Project-Based Learning Integrated Curriculum Use of Technology Small Program Size Empowering Students to Manage Their Own Learning Work-Based Learning Opportunities Program began in 2010-11 with Biotech 1 Program expanded in 2011-12 to include Biotech 2 Currently we offer 4 sections (classes) of Biotechnology STEM Marin Sophomores take Biology/Biotechnology as part of their instructional program Northern California Career Pathways Alliance 5 year, $15 million State DOE grant Regional Consortium ◦ 23 districts ◦ 6 counties Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Lake, Mendocino, Solano Support and implementation contracted to CCASN and ConnectEd Improve CTE pathways in schools ◦ In NUSD: San Marin - Biotechnology Many types/names ◦ ◦ ◦ ◦ Career Academies School-within-school Small Learning Communities Linked Learning Pathway Evidence of success ◦ 92% vs 82% graduation rate ◦ 52% vs 36% 4-year colleges ◦ 11% increase in 8-year earnings Academic Core ◦ College and career readiness, no remediation Technical Core ◦ Career technical courses (Biotech in this case) Work Based Learning ◦ Job shadowing, internships, in-class projects Student Support Services ◦ Counseling, additional instruction Eventually expand to 9-12 Grade Biotechnology courses Integrate with other subject areas Expand work-based learning opportunities Complete Partnership Agreement with Biotech Partners Established in 1993 as part of a development agreement between Bayer HealthCare and the City of Berkeley, Biotech Partners´ work today involves over 35 corporate, government, education and industry partners. They currently partner with Berkeley High School, Oakland Technical High School, and the Peralta Community College District and are expanding to new school districts throughout the Bay Area. Students receive a Certificate of Achievement in Bioscience upon completion of the program. Provide academic and vocational learning opportunities for underserved and underrepresented youth in biotechnology Provide job training opportunities (such as paid internships) for program participants Provide workforce development training for program participants Provide job placement support to participants who have received the Biotech Partners community college program Certificate of Completion in Bioscience Mostly 11th and 12th grade Will expand to 9-12 grade in next few years Internships Co-hort of classes- Biology, English, Geography/Health Biology with an influence of Biotechnology Academy Field trips, social get-togethers and invitations to hear guest speakers associated with Biotechnology Academy. 10th grade courses to be designed in 201516 Period Period Period Period Period Period Period 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Algebra 1 or Geometry English 9 Biology Geography/Health Foreign Language Physical Education (Elective) Available online and in SMHS counseling office.
