2015 NY-VT U12 SL Project REPORT
2015 NY-VT U12 SL Project REPORT NYSSRA/VARA/ NYSEF and the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center worked together to host the 2015 NY-VT U12 SL Project. U12 athletes from NY and VT qualified to attend this 2 day camp, which took place in Lake Placid and at Whiteface Mt on March 28&29, 2015. 40 athletes and 11 coaches participated in a weekend of on snow SL Fundamentals Training and other activities, including team building, a tour of the Olympic Jumping facility, team bowling, and athlete meetings. This camp was very successful due to the hard work of the NYSSRA/VARA project staff, the support of the OTC, and a team orientated, activity filled schedule. The weather over the weekend was snowy and sunny. Saturday’s training included free skiing, where there was 10” of fresh powder on the top of the Mt. Sunday’s weather was beautiful, one of the best spring days this season. The on snow curriculum consisted of a free skiing assessment and warm up. Athletes and coaches then worked in the training environment, where a mixture of SL Courses and drills were set. The Courses included, Stubbie SL, Paneled SL, Mixture of tall/stubbie, Picket Fence, Corridor and the “gauntlet”. The conditions were a little challenging, due to the freeze-thaw that Whiteface had experienced the week prior. Coaches were impressed with the attitude and maturity of the 11 and 12 year old athletes. All the athletes were broken into mixed State groups. They worked hard during the on snow sessions and played hard during the other activities. The opportunity and privilege of staying at the OTC will leave lasting memories in these young athletes. Many new friendships were made over the course of the weekend and our mission to bring our two states together in a positive and productive project was accomplished. It was a privilege and an honor to stay at the Olympic Training Center. The OTC staff was very helpful and friendly. Bowling was a new endeavor for most of the staff and athletes and we all had a great time! Many of the athletes asked if they could stay, just 1 more day! Much appreciation and thanks go to, Jared Steenberge & Staff -Lake Placid OTC, John Norton & Beatty Schlueter – NYSEF, U12 Project- Coaching Staff and Alex Krebs, VARA Youth Coordinator. 2015 Staff – NY VT U12 SL Project: Bob Okoniewski – Labrador Mt.
