GEO/SOLAR THERMAL
WIND
Each Powerhouse has solar
photo-voltaic panels. Photo-voltaic
(or PV) systems use solar cells
to convert solar energy (sunlight
and ultra violet radiation) into electricity. PV
solarpower is pollution-free during use, and
installations operate for many years with little
maintenance or intervention after their initial
set-up.
A closed-loop geothermal or
solar-thermal system will provide heating and cooling for your
new home. Geothermal systems
use the earth as a heat source in winter and a
heat sink in the summer, while solar thermal
systems use the sun’s energy absorbed by
flat plate or evacuated tube collectors. Like a
refrigerator or air conditioner, these systems
use pumps to force the transfer of heat. Setup
costs are higher than for conventional heating
and cooling systems, but the difference is
usually returned in energy savings within 3
to 10 years.
The third Powerhouse power
source is a wind turbine, made
up of two or three propeller like
blades that spin a rotor shaft and
convert wind energy to mechanical power or
electricity. There are two kinds of turbines:
vertical and horizontal axis. One or the other
will be used as part of the Powerhouse package depending on site variables. Powerhouse
wind turbines are mounted atop the home’s
roof and do not require tower placement.
