Running Lines issue 8
Round 1 of the CAS and IPHSA competitions got off to a wet start with just over half the
scheduled fixtures cancelled due to rain. Match reports of all completed fixtures are found below.
Last Friday also saw the Cranbrook Rugby Lunch take place and what a success it was. A brief
report and photos of the lunch as well as the 1st XV Captain’s Breakfast is also below.
Also included in this edition of Running Lines are some brief profiles of many of our coaching

that demonstrates the calibre of coaches that are part of Cranbrook Rugby.

1st XV Captains Breakfast
Saturday morning saw the annual 1st XV brunch where past captains joined the 2015 side to
wish them well for the upcoming season.
A highlight of the morning was the tribute to John Fuller (OC 1938) who was recognised for his
achievements in rugby, medicine and during the Second World War. John’s son Scott paid an
emotional tribute to his father and described in detail his time at Cranbrook, serving in World
War Two including as a Prisoner of War, his rugby achievements after school for the Waratahs
and Wallabies and the enormous impact he had following his rugby career.
At the end of his tribute scot presented the Headmaster with his 1948 Wallaby touring jersey.
Following this tribute the 2015 1st XV were presented their jerseys with previous captains of the
firsts in attendance.
Will Stenmark the Captain of Rugby in 2015 concluded the brunch by giving a vote of thanks
wrapping up a fine morning.
Cranbrook Rugby Luncheon
On May 1st, 340 people joined the CRC for a fundraising lunch to celebrate the past, present
and future of Cranbrook Rugby at the Intercontinental Hotel in Double Bay.
Guests were entertained by rugby legends Alan Jones and John Eales who both gave stirring and
informative speeches, focusing on rugby as an important part of a boys overall education. The
room was filled with famous rugby alumni including ex Cranbrook Wallabies Associate
Professor Paul Darveniza and Anthony Abrahams as well as Cranbrook 2014, Australian
Schoolboy representative, Hugh Summerhayes.
The afternoon was capped by a wonderful performance from Cranbrook parent, Vince Sorrenti.
The day was a huge success, not only because it raised in excess of $125,000.00for Cranbrook
rugby but also for the friendships made and cemented during an excellent afternoon’s
entertainment.
The support shown by the Cranbrook community for its rugby programme was extremely
encouraging and plans are already afoot for next year’s function.
Match reports 2 May
1st XV: 11 – 15 Loss
Last Saturday the first CAS game of the season kicked off against St Aloysius. Cranbrook
started the game strong with a penalty converted by James Coppola putting us 3 points up in the
first 5 minutes. St Aloysius came back strong scoring two tries due to a lack of defence. Just
before half time James Coppola put another 3 points on the score board with another successful
penalty.
This put Cranbrook right back in the game only with the half time 6-12. The second half was a
lot more promising for Cranbrook as ball retention improved greatly and this resulted in
Cranbrook having the majority of the possession. The back line looked very encouraging with
McNiven taking up crash ball after crash ball getting over the ad line.
Tom Hill and Za Rathie put in a massive defensive effort with the biggest hits of the season so
far. This pressure began to tell as St Aloysius conceded a penalty in their own 22m and
subsequently Darcy Searl put it into touch just 5m out from the Aloysius try line.
With a great rolling maul the forward pack managed to push Za Rathie over the try line to put is
1 behind. Soon after that a penalty was given to St Aloysius in striking range, a well-executed
kick from the St Aloysius kicker saw them take a 4 point lead. St Aloysius managed to keep this
lead to the final whistle.
2nd XV 12:12 Draw
The 2nd XV started off on the weekend with the intention to be tenacious in defence and
aggressive across the park. Some good hard running from Olly Crowe and Tom Burston brought
the boys up Aloysius’ end of the field. Then after some tough work around the ruck Oskar
Harrington spread the ball wide and Declan Quin sliced through the Aloysius defence to score
right next to the posts. Ed Negus converted and the score was 7-0.
However, Aloysius came back strong and the 2nd XV had lost some of that aggression coach
Messiter demanded in defence. The boys were stuck down their own end and after several failed
attempts to exit Aloysius ran over in broken play, 7-7. This fired the boys up and they came
back harder but Aloysius worked their way back down the field in the dying seconds of the half,
and drew a penalty. Thinking that the ball would simply be kicked out and the half-finished
Cranbrook had their heads down and the crafty Aloys kicker chipped into the in-goal and
scored. 7-12 at halftime.
After a motivational speech from coach Messiter, the 2nd XV came out with a renewed tenacity
and aggression. The set piece was excellent which earned the boys some dominant field position
and eventually forced a penalty. After some more hard running from Barakat, Gibson and
Winton off the bench, the boys ploughed over the line and Olly Crowe came away with another
try.
The conversion was missed so it was a draw at 12-12. After a shocking restart Aloysius
regathered the ball and set up camp down the Cranbrook end. The cheers from the stand, and the
determination from the boys to not lose, kept Aloysius out. Eventually forcing an error, allowing
the boys to clear the ball. Narrowly avoiding defeat but deserving a win the 2nd XV finished 1212.
16A Win
The 16As were outstanding in their first round victory against St Aloysius. From the opening
whistle the forwards laid a platform that allowed Finnbar Stenmark to bring his backs into the
game at the right moments.
The first twenty minutes was flawless with Cranbrook running in multiple tries to get out to a 20
point lead at half time.
Aloysius put up more a fight in the second half and scored a try but the 16As started the CAS
competition well and will take plenty of confidence into their hard away fixture against Barker
this weekend.
15A Loss 5:50
It was rainy morning as the 15A's team ran out onto the field and received the ball off kickoff.
Unfortunately after small mistakes by the back line, St Aloysius hscored 2 tries. This continued
as St Aloysius scored more tries.
At half time the 15's were behind considerably and so were playing for pride. As a result the
15A's came out strong scoring a try in the 2nd half by Arias Nicolai Richards. Afterward, the
team was fired up courtesy of this try however they could not prevent the two tries that were
later scored finishing the game 50-5. However it was a much more promising second half and
one that can improve throughout the season.
15B Loss 14:24
15Bs had a great first hit out against Aloysius on Saturday going down in a good contest 24-14.
The boys defended valiantly throughout but were starved of the ball through some very good
offensive ruck work by Aloysius. The whole team deserves mention but particular highlights
were the big hits by Jay Erhlich, The Enforcer, and the tries to Fionn Parker and Konrad Kluck
on the back of some positive football by the whole team. There is a terrific spirit in the team;
they train hard, they play hard and they enjoy the game. It should be a great season ahead.
15C Loss
The 15Cs had a tough start to the season going down to St. Aloysius College quite convincingly.
The boys’ slow start to the game was costly with the boys from the north putting some quick
points on the board with some solid runs from a large forward pack. However, the end of the
first half ended in a great defensive improvement from the Cranbrook boys, illustrated by some
Solid tackles from Tom O Neil and Emmanuel Katsigerakis. This effort put the boys in great
stead for the beginning of the second half, as their defensive efforts gradually turned into some
attack, resulting in our first try of the match. Although a hefty loss was at hand, the boys are
keen to put some defensive training in place, and turn around the results in Round 2.
14A Won 26:10
The 14A's won 26-10 against Aloysius with an outstanding performance from Peter North
scoring four tries, Jude Gibbs scoring one try and Max Epstein making a few great runs and big
tackles on St Aloysius’ big number 8.
In the first half Cranbrook were dominating in the rucks, scrums and line outs. The backs put on
a great performance by taking the advice that our coach gave us; not to go wide but instead play
short. All in all it was a good start to the season, though there is still some major work we'll
have to do in training for the upcoming games.
14B Won 20:5
It was the first game back of the season and the boys wanted to start the season with a bang. The
forwards were courageous and physically dominated Aloysius. We won the rucks and scrums
and made our tackles. Although our lack of urgency let through a sneaky try from the Aloysius
boys. With some fancy moves from the backs lead by Angus Finlayson and Clem Corkill the
ball got to a few of the forwards. The forwards busted through Aloysius defensive line with
Marcus Roberts, Tristram Mault., Henry Harding, Anders Steglick all scoring tries. With a few
great kicks from Ben Waitsman and Marlon Mosely we all finished on a high. A great effort
from the whole team won us the game 20-5 with a great start to the season.
11A 0:49 Loss
A great effort for the first game of the season. Unfortunately it didn't go our way. Some good
play was seen in defence. However, some work is needed in the breakdown.
A mention should be given to Toby Symons for some excellent tackles. Hard training sessions
next week should hopefully see some points on the board.
11B 24:50 Loss
The B's got off to shaky start, with a well-trained Knox side scoring a few early tries. Some
great efforts from Harry P and Zavier saw some promise in the first half, but Cranbrook
remained scoreless at half time. The boys came firing into the second half, scoring four
blistering tries, three coming from fly-half, Harry P and one from Aidan Chen. Despite a
disappointing result, the boys won a convincing second half, impressing all on the sidelines.
Injury Diagnosis and Treatment Clinic @ Cranbrook

Rotunda and BBQ Roster
The Cranbrook Rugby Club would like to encourage you all to sign up for a shift or two on the
rotunda or BBQ during the season. It is easy to do; just click the link below and enter your
details. It is a great way to get to know other parents and some of the kids in the Cranbrook
rugby community. We usually find it works best if you sign up for an hour before or after your
son plays, as you usually have to be there then anyway as they warm up or reserve for the next
team.
