This Saturday 16th of May is Round #3 of the CAS and IPSHA
Football Competitions. Congratulations to the 10B’s, 10C’s, 8A’s,
8B’s, 8E’s, 7A’s, 7D’s, 7E’s, 6A’s, 5A’s and 5B’s who all recorded
victories last Saturday.
Team lists have been posted on the sport notice board on Level 2,
House areas and emailed to players.
I wish all players, coaches and managers the very best in their
Round #3 fixture.

1st XI

Unfortunately due to inclement weather in week 1 of Round 1,
the Cranbrook boys were unable to get a game against St. Aloysius
and so faced a Barker team which had a bit more match fitness
comparatively. For quite a few boys it was their first game of CAS
football, however despite the nerves, they stayed composed and
showed exactly why they were chosen.
Coming into the season, the Second XI were looking strong and
seem to provide great depth to a strong First XI. They still look
strong, despite the result and this game – the first competition
match of the season – has been a huge wake up call, there are things
the side can work on and hopefully next week, we will get a better
result. The side battled against Barker on the weekend, eventually
going down 0-2. Good performances by Harvey Billingham, Tom
Callanan and Oliver Adler weren’t enough to see Cranbrook get
the win we were looking for. Oliver Adler scored but was denied by
the linesman and Theo Burns sent a beautiful free-kick sailing past
the post. It was a good game overall and we will look to improve at
training this week.
The first half didn’t kick off quite as hoped, with Barker stringing
together a series of successful passes to put the ball in the back of
the net. Perhaps serving as a wakeup call, Cranbrook got into gear
and begun to have a far greater presence on the field. Scott Beattie
made some excellent runs down the left wing, not getting lucky but
certainly showing a weakness in their defence. It was a mesmerising
through ball from Jordi Swibel that set up our first chance, which
was successfully finished by striker Asha. The boys began to fire up,
contesting in far more competitive tackles, and certainly putting
Barker under the pump. Several yellow cards were awarded to the
Cranbrook players, but never the less their intentions were good.
Barker used the advantage of several free kicks to score one more
goal just before the closure of the half.
After an incredibly motivating rev up at half time, the boys burst
out of the gates with a desire to chase Barker down. The first twenty
minutes of the half were incredible. The boys had lifted up to a
new level, and even the assistant referee had money on a Cranbrook
win. Midway through the half the hard work paid off, with Swibel
scoring a goal of pure class. The game stayed in Cranbrook’s favour,
with the boys obtaining a large amount of possession. However,
unfortunately our fitness didn’t last out. In the first, second and
fourth minute of injury time Barker were able to convert, finishing
the game with a score which didn’t reflect the true nature of the
contest.
Overall, full credit to the boys who played, and hopefully they
should be able to get up against Waverley.
3rd XI
The 3rd XI played a highly disciplined match, absorbing pressure
and frustrating the Barker attack. Aggressive positional play by Rael
and Simeonides, allowed the back four to hold a solid defensive
attack, while Shanahan provided relief up top with his blistering
speed. Barker’s goals came from our desire to push higher up the
field, as we were caught on the counter. Shanahan was unlucky not
to pull a goal back as his effort shaved the crossbar. A solid game,
with the boys showing the ability to really play to a plan.
4th XI
After a long drive out to Barker for an afternoon game the boys
were ready to start off the season with a strong performance after
last week’s game being rained out. In the first half Barker were able
to break us down, some lackadaisical defending allowed them to
open the scoring. In the second half there was a strong start from
the boys in both defending and counter attack, we showed grit
and strength to start to dominate the game but we just weren’t
taking the chances being supplied. Hats off to Max Kutena for a
strong performance in his first game as a goalkeeper despite the
unfortunate events of the goal. The boys put up a very strong
performance against a very strong team and we are looking for a
result next week.

9A
The 10As had a strong game against Barker, with an outstanding
effort from the whole team. They applied consistent pressure
throughout the game, supported by the skilled footwork from ManOf-The-Match, Harrison Flynn, and Marco Romeo, and plenty of
speed from Matt Abelev. Next week, against Waverley, we need to
have increased discipline and communication, whilst maintaining
the same level of enthusiasm as this week.
After a hard week of training, the Cranbrook 9A team gave it all
they had to match up with a strong Barker side. In the first half
the Cranbrook boys were stringing together nice play in and out
of the midfield, but despite some threating shots on goal by Rory
Steyn, they couldn’t find the net. The game was end-to-end, both
teams defended well keeping the ball out of the box and neither
converting their chances until late in the first half where the Barker
striker poked through and claimed the lead. The start of the second
half was looking like Cranbrook was just about to get the equaliser,
but just couldn’t find the finishing product. Despite the valiant
effort, Cranbrook saw out a 1-0 loss. The team can learn from this
and now move on to prepare for next week’s game.
10Bs
The 10Bs managed an impressive win against Barker this weekend.
The whole team maintained a high level of energy throughout the
game. Michael Orfanos scored an impressive goal from a penalty,
with Will Cahill displaying some impressive saves to ensure that
the Barker didn’t level the score. The second half was dominated
by Cranbrook, who listened to the coaches feedback and improved
their positioning and really found their feet as a team. While the
whole team played well, Charlie Fine earned himself man of the
match for his tackling and commitment at all times.
10C
The 10C’s game was an outstanding game with a 2 – 0 win with
Tim Messenger and Ben Harvey scoring two incredible goals in the
first half against Barker. With a Cranbrook win to begin the season,
the entire team played very strong and very well while showing
serious talent and a great sense of camaraderie and respect amongst
the team.
10D
First game for the season for the 10D’s already putting in their
all against Barker on Saturday. The team played great, working
aggressively and keeping the ball on Barker’s side for the majority.
Tom Edwards, Anthony Stamell and Niki Ternezis playing with
great footwork and keeping a clean and skilled position. Alex
Nettleton, goalie, was fantastic, saving many goals with dives and
strategic positioning. Some fantastic play from Erik Tang, scoring
in the first half with great ability. To improve, we needed to play
our set positions better and act with more organised play. Although
a 1-4 loss, we played with great teamwork and strategy and it looks
like a great season ahead for the boys.
9B
It was a terrific game on Saturday, the Cranbrook B’s played the
Barker B’s. Cranbrook started off well with precision passes and
powerful shots. Lucas Davis was awarded a penalty in the first half
after a beautiful run splitting the defence but unfortunately he was
tackled in the penalty box. Jordan Haifer stepped up for the penalty
but painfully missed by a couple inches over the bar just before the
start of the second half. The second half started and Barker came
out strong with a run straight through the Cranbrook defence and
whacked a shot into the net. It was 1-0 and the game was closing,
but Josh Davis was in a perfect position for a shot in the box but
was roughly tackled by the towering Barker Centre Back, a penalty
was award - a potential game drawer, this time the kicker was
Josh Davis he stepped up to the penalty and went left, but it was
saved by an excellent dive from the Barker goalkeeper. The boys
congratulated Barker on their victory and enjoyed the physicality of
the match.
9C
Our first game against Barker was a promising start, drawing 0-0.
There was plenty of missed chances to score the winning goal but
unfortunately it was not to be. Andrew Wan was doing lots of
running upfront. Man of the match, Max Gerlash was running the
midfield with Jordie Shore providing calmness on the ball. Liam
Emmett causes lots of problems for the opposition all game down

8A’s and 8B’s
the right but unfortunately missed the penalty that could have won
the game. Lots of areas to work on but overall a very positive start
to the season.
9D
The 9Ds started off well and were unlucky to not score in the
opening minutes. Barker was rattled but fought back early and they
were on the board with 2 quick goals. Cranbrook had some strong
players fighting hard for the ball but were overpowered by the
opposition this week. More work on positional play and strategy is
needed to see this capable team display their full potential.
9E
Terrific start to the season for this newly formed team saw a
tenacious and worthy effort against a skilled opponent. There was
great attacking domination in the first half from James, Zac and
Sam. The second half brought defensive pressure against a much
larger Barker team. Even with continued efforts from Barker our
defence held firm and thanks to the skills of Callum the match
ended in a worthy nil all draw.
8A
With high spirits and an assured eagerness to start the season off the
8A’s were fired up and ready to play against Barker. Within the first
30 seconds of the match Cranbrook was able to steal the ball and
almost slip in a goal. We were feeling on top as many other near
misses followed by some beautiful set plays from Daniel Padoani
and Steven Sohn. But suddenly a counter attack saw a cracking
Barker shot see its way into the back of the net. But that wasn’t it
for us. We fought back and by half time evened the score up to 1-1
from a lovely touch from our striker, Steven Sohn. Some steady
defending from our back line was holding very well but we were
getting tired during the second half. Nearing the end of the match
we finally burst through Barker’s defence with Daniel Padoani
tapping the ball in from a great cross. We finished them off with a
penalty from Jack McLoughlin. Great win to kick off the start of
the season and I hope we can bring home another win next week.
8B
After a good start we were playing well, making efficient plays and
keeping the ball in the opponents half of the pitch. After a few
missed opportunities Max Hannam finally scored from a cross.
Soon after, keeping the ball in play Alex Randall scored a stunning
header with an assist from Xavier Zuccon. Alex Randall then scored
again, this time it was a solo goal into the bottom of the net. After
thinking that we had no chance of losing the opponents quickly
snuck in two goals to finish the first half. The final half was full of
great team work and opportunities but unfortunately neither side
scored.

8C
In the first half of the game Barker scored 1-0. It was a very bad
goal from their side. Their coach called subs but the ref didn’t
respond and Barker did their throw in. No one knew what
was happening and Barker went up and scored a goal. After
that Cranbrook picked up their game and started going for the
opposition goal. We had a couple of attempts and Barker could
barely hold off the powerful shots from George McMillan. In the
second half an amazing throw-in went to Conor Stratis and shot
the ball in into the right bottom corner. After that Barker scored
again and the score was 2-1. Someone gave a high ball of to Charles
Turnbull, he controlled the ball, came around a couple of players
and scored a goal. There was 2 minutes left till the end of the game
and Cranbrook almost scored again but it was unsuccessful. The
game finished on 2-2. Both teams were positive with the scores
because they had a great game against each other.
8A - Tim Sanders
8D
If Football were AFL, the 8Ds would have won this round against
Barker, with Seb Fendall, Jacky Lin and Zac Zinn shooting about
five goals between them just past the post. It was a frustrating
game as Cranbrook dominated play but couldn’t convert any
goals. Fifteen minutes in, Barker scored a goal into the bottom left
corner. The score stayed at 1-0 for the majority of the match, and
in the second half we still couldn’t get any past the keeper despite
some great play and majority possession. Finally Seb shot one in
the corner in the final five minutes to bring the score to 1-1. If we
can work on our goal-scoring the 8Ds are sure to have a promising
season.
8E
What a fantastic start to the season for the 8Es! Despite the fact
that the majority of the team are new to Football this season, the
cohesion of the team was evident from the start, with some fantastic
passing in the midfield from Gus Murray, Nick Burke and Josh
Manovel. The first goal was a spectacular chip over Barker’s heads
by Xander Glennon, then Simon Lyu let loose scoring two more
in the first half. Benji Netterfield also made some great runs up
the front but it was Simon’s time to shine with a third goal in the
second half, as well as a goal from Zac Zinn to bring our total to
5-0. New player Alif Ninsiri made a great impression in goals,
making numerous saves. The 8Es are hoping to keep this positive
momentum for the next round against Waverley.
8A - Jack McLoughlin
7A
The match against Barker began with an intense burst of energy
with an early attempt by Jordan Chapman-Race followed
by a Robert Fraser / Charlie Green combination. Both were
unsuccessful but it was very unfortunate neither found the back
of the net. This disappointment was short-lived with Charlie then
Robert scoring thrice in relatively quick succession- the latter
with a fast volley over everyone’s heads. A revitalised Barker took
the field in the second half and there was no dominant team for
10 minutes. Barker finally scored but were answered once again
by Charlie and Robert. Chris Lakis was unlucky not to add to
Cranbrook’s total. A fantastic result from a solid team who are
shaping up to be the one to watch this season.
8A - Daniel Padoani

5A
Cranbrook began the match competitively with both some
solid defence from Ned Henderson and an early attempt from
Theo Whittaker. Barker responded with an unwavering attack at
Cranbrook’s goals with Oliver Ferster performing some spectacular
goal-keeping. Unfortunately the ball finally slipped through our
defences. In the second half, the 7Bs experienced a massive loss in
energy and intensity that saw Barker dominate them. Tao Sullivan
and Jem Schutzinger had good runs but they were unable to level the
score. Finally some solid teamwork saw Theo score Cranbrook’s only
goal. Whilst the result did not go Cranbrook’s way, it was a learning
experience on which to build for the remainder of the season.
Sloppy start from the Cranbrook boys, for the entire first half most
of the team were playing out of position. When our boys had the
ball there was a lack of a team coherence, too many attempts to run
the ball on solo runs. Trinity took full advantage of our misshapen
side and scored 2 goals on counter attacking runs.
7C
The 7Cs fought hard, but were defeated by Barker. Luke
Schwirtlich scored from a penalty, having made a brilliant run
from halfway only to be foaled close to the goal. He smacked
the ball into the back of the net from the penalty. Tony Jin made
several great crosses, including one to Jermaine Cyprien that almost
resulted in a goal. The midfield and defence played well, with
Barker having to work hard to create opportunities. Jack Folden
is to be thanked for coming up from the 7Es for a second game as
goalkeeper and made several terrific saves.
7D
In a close fought game, Hugo Patton sent a cracker of a shot into
the left corner for the first goal. Our defence was excellent, with
Robert Patterson being very effective to snuff out Barker’s attack.
Lachlan McGregor was robbed of a more than one goal by the
exceptional Barker goalie. The mid field set up the attack and
Hugo Patton managed to score a second time. The referee was
congratulated by both sides for a fair game.
7E
Nathan Lotter scored the first goal from a brilliant pass from
Yangda Bei, to squeeze past the determined Barker goalie. Yangda
had several shots himself. Seconds before full time, Max Jan
scored from an indirect free kick taken by Will Karagiannis. Vas
Sotiropoulos and Max Jan backed up to also play for the 7Ds.
6A
A great workout for their first game of the season. When the boys
passed it around good football was played and many opportunities
at goal were had. All boys played well with solid games from
Conner Beris, Ed Bickerstaff and Gustav Soerenson. Goal scorers
6B
This game flowed from one end of the field to the other. The
boys played well with some good passing of the ball creating
opportunities. The boys should also be very pleased with their
strong defence. A fantastic individual goal by Jack Bouvier levelled
the scores up. All boys played well with special mention to Milo
Ritchie in defence and Will Munday in attack. Keep the effort up
for next week boys.
Half time was a chance to regroup and redirect the team. After
some home truths from the coaching staff, the TEAM suddenly
became just that and the second half told a completely different
tale. The players held their shape and finally started passing the
ball around and the reward was almost immediate, after a foul Sam
Conrad scored a cracker of a goal from a free kick. The momentum
from there on was all with Cranbrook. A mistake by Trinity fed
Kasra Tavakoli
Into a scoring position and he levelled with a stunning volley. Sam
Conrad had sent a Beckhamesque free kick from 30 yards out just
over the bar, just before he scored the winner from a blistering
counter attacking move. Trinity were a well-disciplined team and
hopefully our boys will take heed from the scare of the first half into
this weekend fixture with Riverview.
5B
Really positive team effort from start to finish with the B’s. Every
single member of the team played their socks off! Jack Dawson
and Kai Sullivan were constantly making blistering runs up the
wings. Jonty Karp was like a brick wall in defence. We had plenty
of chances but couldn’t quite score until Sam Hadassin managed to
score the only goal of the match to give us a well-deserved win!
5C
An all-round superb effort from the 5C team. Everyone played
exceptionally well and were unlucky to come away without a point.
Daniel Fidler and Saul Galambos deserve a special mention because
of their relentless efforts. Daniel must of ran 15km and seemed to
be everywhere on the pitch.

Code of conduct
Players
• Play by the rules and in a spirit of good sportsmanship
•P
lay for the “fun of it” and not just to please parents and
coaches.
•C
ontrol your temper. Verbal abuse of officials or other
players, deliberately fouling or provoking an opponent, and
throwing equipment are neither acceptable nor permitted in
any sport.
• Work hard both for yourself and your team. Your team’s
performance will benefit, so will you.
• Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Do not
interfere with, bully or take unfair advantage of another
player.
•C
o-operate with your coach, team mates and opponents.
Without them there would be no game.
• S upport all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from
sporting activities.
•R
ecognise the value and importance of coaches. They give of
their time and resources to provide recreational activities for
your son and other boys and deserve your support.
Spectators
• We encourage boys to support their school teams and to be
dressed in the school’s uniform while doing so.
• We expect barracking to be enthusiastic but not to be
fanatical or designed to heckle or belittle or disturb the
opponents. For example, barracking, for or against, during
a kick at goal is always bad sportsmanship. Boys should
be encouraged to barrack for their school rather than for
an individual team member. Booing, whistling, playing or
beating musical instruments are in bad taste and wholly
unacceptable.
In the event of a player, or athlete being sent-off during a
CAS fixture, it is the responsibility of that boy’s Headmaster
at his discretion to determine the penalty. It is generally
understood among Headmasters, however, that the boy will
serve at least one week’s suspension from participating in the
CAS competition.
• Vocal support for any team should never encourage violence
or rough or illegal play.
Parents
• I t is never acceptable to express disapproval of a referee’s or
umpire’s decision – no matter whether the referee be adult
or schoolboy.
• Focus upon the boy’s efforts and performance rather than
the overall outcome of the game. This assists the boy in
setting realistic goals related to his ability by reducing
emphasis on winning.
• Teach your son that an honest effort is as important as

• I f you disagree with an official, raise the issue through the
appropriate channels rather than question the official’s
judgement and honesty in public. Remember most officials
give their time and effort voluntarily for your son’s benefit.
•E
ncroaching onto the field of play, the shouting out of
suggestions for players, referees or umpires to hear are not
allowed.
• There is a complete ban on all alcoholic drinks at grounds
where games between Associated Schools’ teams are being
played.
• We expect our players to be modest in success and generous
in defeat, not showing in either case undue emotion. Good
play, by our own school and by the opposing school, should
be applauded willingly and openly.
•A
t all times spectators should leave the area tidy and free of
rubbish when they leave.
• We look to adults (parents, Old Boys and other spectators)
to set an example by their self-control at matches.

Each month a group of parents meet to
discuss ways in which the Cranbrook
Football Supporters Club can assist the
school in growing the sport. No need to
have any football knowledge or experience,
just a love of Cranbrook and a desire to
get involved.

Training & Fixtures Cancellations
On days where there is poor weather, please call the Senior School
wet weather line on 9294 5089.
You will hear a recorded message that will tell you if training or a
particular fixture is on or off.
For Saturday sport, the wet weather line is first updated by 7am.
If further fixtures are cancelled then the recorded message is
updated at 11am.
For before or after school training the wet weather line will be
updated by 6am for morning training sessions and by 2pm for after
school training.
All efforts will be made to find alternate arrangements in case of
inclement weather.
