SUMMER READING JOURNAL
Students entering 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades are required to select one book
from their grade level reading list and complete 3 reading journal entries. Students
should complete one entry at the beginning, middle, and end of the novel for a
total of three entries. One complete entry includes a response to all seven items
listed below. Entries may be typed and printed or handwritten. This assignment will
be collected by your teachers during the first week of class and will count as a
grade.
Summer Journal Reading Assignment
NOTES
Write anything you feel is significant. Include characterization, setting,
conflicts, plot events, quotes, and anything else you may need to know.
QUESTION
Write down questions you have about the novel, and any questions about
the reading you do not understand. Does the novel confuse you? Why?
CONNECT
Write down anything that you find familiar. Does this remind you of a
film, work of literature, current event, historical moment, or experience?
SUMMARIZE
Retell, in your own words, the action and important details of your
reading. (five sentences)
PREDICT
What might happen next? What effect will this have? Think short termrather than trying to predict the ending of the novel, think about what
may happen in the next chapter.
Write down any examples of literary devices such as metaphor, simile,

allusion, personification, irony, foil, alliteration, symbol, hyperbole,
onomatopoeia, oxymoron, ect. Include the page number. How does this
affect the reader? Why the author might use this device.
REFLECT
Write down any quotes, sayings or moments that affect you in some way. If
you choose quote or saying, be sure to include reasons why you chose that
quote. What else would you like to learn about this author/genre/ topic?
