of the Kingston
Births, Marriages, Deaths
Church Records are practically the only source for the earliest years. When
enquiring, give the region, the parish if possible and approximate dates.
Church of England (Anglican) records starting 1792 are at the Synod of
Ontario, 90 Johnson St., Kingston, Ontario. K7L lX7.
Roman Catholic records are at St. Mary's Cathedral, 279 Johnson St.,
Kingston, Ontario K7L 1Y5. These registers from 1816 to 1869 have been copied
and are in typescript at Kingston Public Library, Bagot St., Kingston, and also
at Queen's University Archives, Douglas Library, University Avenue, Kingston.
St. Mary's Registers are also on microfilm at Archives of Ontario, 77 Grenville
St., Toronto M7 A 1C7, and may be purchased from that address.
Presbyterian
Records are at St. Andrew's Church, 130 Clergy St. E.,
Kingston.
United Church records include some Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational records and are at United Church Archives, Victoria College, 73 Queen's
Park Cres., Toronto M5S lK7.
Many Baptist records are at Canadian Baptist Archives, McMaster Divinity
College, Hamilton, Ontario L8S 4Kl.
Note that as Church of England was the official church of Canada during the
early settlement years, these records may contain data for individuals who later
appear under other denominations.
Registers
Two Presbyterian registers, that of Rev. Robert McDowall of Fredericksburg
for the years 1806-1836, and that of Rev. William Smart of Brockville for the
years 1811-1827 are in Queen's University Archives. Rev. Smart's Registers have
been printed in Volume 38 of Ontario History (available in most libraries). Rev.
McDowall's register was printed in the 1899 volume of Ontario History, and
recently it was revised by Mr. and Mrs. C.L.R. Wanamaker, R.R. #1, Belleville,
Ontario K8N 4Zl.
Also at Queen's Archives is the register of Conway United Church (originally
Methodist) between Adolphustown and Bath for years 1902-1951.
Luthern Church records for Ebenezer Church (1794-1832) have been printed
in Volume 6 of Ontario History.
The Frontenac County Judges' Marriage register for 1859-1869 is on microfilm at Archives of Ontario and at Government Documents, Douglas Library,
Queen's University, Kingston.
Civil registration of births, marriages, deaths began in Ontario on July 1,
1869. Application after that date should be made to The Office of the Registrar
General, Macdonald Block, Parliament Buildings, Toronto.

Cemetery Records
Burials started in 1853 at Cataraqui Cemetery and records are complete at 927
Purdy Mills Road, Kingston K7M 3N 1. Mail enquiries are answered. Enquiries
concerning Roman Catholic burials should be directed to St. Mary's Cemetery,
P.O. Box 1630, Kingston K7L 5C8.
All cemeteries on Wolfe Island have been copied and published, and may now
be purchased from Ontario Genealogical Society, Kingston Branch, P.O. Box
1394, Kingston K7L 5C6.
Many cemeteries in Lennox & Addington County have been transcribed and
may be searched at Lennox & Addington County Museum, Thomas St., Napanee, Ontario.
Monumental inscriptions for several of the cemeteries in Frontenac County
have been published and may be purchased from Ontario Genealogical Society,
Kingston Branch, P.O. Box 1394, Kingston K7L 5C6.
Land Registry
All documents relating to registry of land in Frontenac County are held at the
registry office, West Street, Kingston. It is not possible to search these by mail,
but individuals may search them. It is necessary to know the Concession and Lot
numbers, as well as Township.
Wills
Wills for Frontenac County prior to 1858 have been deposited at Archives of
Ontario (vide supra) and are on microfilm there. A list of these wills is in the
Surrogate Court Office, County Court House, Kingston.
Wills after 1858 and prior to 1925 are listed in abstract at the Surrogate Court
Office (above). These are available for personal search on request. It takes about
one week to have them made available.
Wills after 1925 are held at the Surrogate Court Office in Kingston and may be
searched there.
A number of wills dealing with land are held at the Frontenac County Registry
Office (see Land Registry above); enquiry should be made there.
Other Genealogical
Data
Census records for 1851, 1861, and 1871 are available on microfilm at most
large libraries and can be obtained on Inter-Library Loan. To use them profitably it is best to know the city, town, township or county.
City directories began in 1857 and are available at Kingston Public Library
and in Special Collections, Douglas Library. Besides addresses, they often give
occupations, memberships in civic, educational and social associations. Directories for other cities and for counties are also available.
Assessment rolls for the City of Kingston for 1838-1934 and for the village of
Portsmouth (1859-1947) contain considerable data about property and inhabitants. It is advisable to know the ward or street as these registers are not indexed.
They are held in Queen's University Archives.
Historical atlases (circa 1878) for Frontenac, Lennox & Addington Counties,
and for Hastings & Prince Edward County are in Kingston Public Library and
the most large labraries. Reprints can be purchased. These books give maps of

all townships and list owners on each Lot, as well as many biographical notes on
families and individuals.
Early newspapers (from 1810) on microfilm are in Special Collections,
Douglas Library, and Kingston Public Library. The latter is making a detailed
index of these papers, presently completed to 1840.
Maps. If you are not sure of the geography of the area, a detailed map will help
you learn the locations of various municipalities. These can be obtained from
Ministry of Natural Resources,

The present Archdiocese of Kingston is Canada's oldest English-speaking
Roman Catholic diocese. It was founded as a diocese on 27 January 1826 by a
division of the Dioceses of Quebec, and created an Archdiocese on 28 December
1899.
The attached list of the parishes and missions in the Archdiocese is alphabetical by location, with the date of the first resident pastor for each. An 'x' beside a
date indicates that the church has been closed.

BURYING GROUND IN THE
TOWN OF PERTH, LANARK COUNTY, ONTARIO

This recording (indexed) of the old Methodist Burying Ground, currently
known as SI. Paul's United Church Cemetery on Robinson Street, Perth,
Ontario, provides complete inscriptions
for 113 tombstones.
A plan of the
cemetery, showing relative location of the numbered tombstones, is included.
An excellent early history of Methodism in Perth with references is developed,
and links to a surprising number of locations, even as distant as south-western
Ontario, are given. Walling's 1863 map of the town of Perth is reproduced on
the inside covers as well as the 1863 Directory for Perth.
